Considering Intimus 4T Hybrid based on CNET's rave review…  I had a local retailler do an in-home consultation, and in their quote, they included a 'power conditioner' and what seemed to me VERY expensive cables. Do I really need a 'power conditioner'? I understand the basics of surge protection, and I have no problem protecting my electronics investments, but if I don't need that stuff, I could upgrade receiver or speakers. Same question for the cables – do they really have to be brand-name gold-plated? Will that do ANYTHING for the sound the gets to me ears? I'd pay for it IF it did, but I just got the sense the Magnolia guy was stickin' it to me…

My room is 12×24 and I'm planning on getting a 55" TV. Listening to music (without TV) will be EQUALLY important to me.

Thanks for the great Forum and articles!

You do NOT need most of the stuff they will have recommended.  Much of it is high-margin stuff that retailers make a mint on. Now, to your questions:

    - Power Conditioner – How's the power in your house?  If it's steady, and quality, you don't need one.  They're nice to have (especially the ones with battery backups), and look great, but they're not necessary in some cases.

    - Cables – Save your money.  Some think that they have huge effect (I personally don't), and some get them to improve the looks of their system in all aspects.  However, like I said, save your money.  Purchase quality cables, even the cheap ones, and be done with it.  Check out Monoprice.com for all your cable needs.

I would certainly consider getting a power conditioner (Panamax, APC), but skip the cables, ESPECIALLY the ones a retailer will try to get you to buy.  And for all that is holy, avoid Monster anything.

I agree with everything said above.  In my case, however, I needed the power conditioner.  Apparently, i have "dirty" power.  No matter what I tried, my speakers would buzz like crazy.  I got an older panamax off of ebay and problem solved.  I suggest seeing if you need it, then buying.
