After lurking in several forums, reading reviews and talking with a couple of the guys at Aperion, I pulled the trigger on the Slimstage with 8A sub package on Friday.  It'll ship early this week and I'm stoked to get it.

It was tough deciding between the Slimstage and one of the various Yamaha YSPs, but the clincher for me was the service and attitude of the guys at Aperion.   That and the 30 day return gave my wife confidence enough to give it a try in our smallish living room. (she's skittish about the sub)

    Hey Jason,

Got it yesterday and so far things are working great.  I'm working to find the sweet spot between the bar and sub, each tweak gets it closer, but sound from the bar itself sometimes seems really thin compared to what I've read from reviews.  It's almost as though there isn't anything coming from the downward firing woofers.  I haven't tweaked the EQ to try and bump up the lower frequencies yet, but I'm gonna give it a try.

I have one question about setup…

The subwoofer menu options on the bar menu are different than what is indicated in the manual.  Specifically, there is no option for "External Subwoofer" under the Setup menu…there is only a "Subwoofer" option.  Once "Subwoofer" is selected there isn't an option for 5.1 LFE…even when the unit detects a 5.1 signal.  It only has the option to select Y/N, level, phase and crossover.  Are these the options I should be seeing?

    Thanks!

I'm still working to find the sweet spot for using the sub, but here is my initial impression…

The sound from the bar is very detailed and crisp.  After 3 or 4 hours of use the sound is becoming more full and has a bit of warmth to it that wasn't there initially (In the default settings).  I've been fiddling with the EQ settings to find the right fit for our room, but I think I'll hold off a bit until the bar breaks in a little more, so I know how it'll sound over time.

There still feels like a lot of sound space between the bar and the sub.  I've been tweaking the sub location and crossover point and the hole is sounding smaller over time. (maybe this has to do with the bar breaking in too?)

The opening scroll to Empire Strikes back while in Movie mode is an example of the hole I'm perceiving.  I hear a lot from the bar and it almost sounds like the music is playing through a megaphone or from a box and the sub is almost nowhere to be found in the musical score.  Then it's almost overload when the bigger effects come into play.  I've tried adjusting all the options, crossover on the sub and bar independently and together, but can't get it dialed in…at least not with Star Wars.

    Still tweaking

    Hello there,

Right so when the manual refers to "External Subwoofer" it is referring to that same Subwoofer menu in the SLIMstage, External Subwoofer is merely the name of that portion of the manual.    If you look at the pictures in the manual you can see that they match exactly what you see on your SLIMstage display.  Not sure where you see 5.1 LFE Channel mentioned in the manual as I don't see it, but it is also the same as the subwoofer channel.

As for the sub and the soundbar not blending well, what settings are you currently using in that Subwoofer menu in the SLIMstage as well as for the level and crossover knobs on the back of the 8A?

Please let me know I can make suggestions based off of your current settings, thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to do some back and forth emailing!  Based on your recommendations, I'm really starting to dial it in!  I received your follow up email re more adjustments to the levels and will give it a try and let you know how I make out.

    Thanks!
