Looking to add some Intimus 5Bs to my HT living room as surround speakers in a 5.1 config. Currently have 6Ts/5C/12D up front. Not in a position to wall mount so going to need some stands. What exactly is the right height for back/surround speakers?

Right now I am looking at the Aperion i29
    VTI BLE101 (adjustable) http://www.standsandmounts.com/vtiblseries3334-59inchadjustableheightspeakerstandsble101blackorsilver.aspx
    RaXXess (42 or 36) http://www.zzounds.com/item–RAXERSS42

Just not sure where to go here. i29 and Raxxess both look sturdy. I like the i29 but might be too short to clear couches? VTI's adjustability is really nice but not sure how stable/wobbly it would be.

What should I be looking for here? I guess I am just not sure "how high" is optimal for my surround speakers. Are we talking ear level? Or maybe higher? The 5Bs are 12in high so if you add the i29 that gets it up to 41". Is that high enough? I am sure it is subjective to everyone's tastes, but would love to know your experiences and recommendations. Looks like THX recommends 2 feet higher than ear level. Thoughts?

I'll try to post a picture of my set up, but in the meantime here is a crude drawing to get an idea of the layout.

Did you get my e-mail back?  Just wanted to make sure.

You can see 5B's on i29's in relation to my couch here:   http://www.virtualpj.com/images/HT%202.0/17.jpg

They're at a pretty great height currently.  No interference in terms of the couch blocking either the tweet or the woofer.

Hey deuce good to see you around again.

Four or five feet off the ground is ideal placement for surrounds in my book, so the i29s do put them a little low, but only by about seven inches.

You can certainly go with the BLE101 but the disadvantage is that it doesn't have a security screw to attach it to the stand so it won't be quite as secure as the i29.

The Raxxess top plate is pretty huge at 12"X12" so I think the smaller 5Bs will look a little funny on them.

If you don't have pets or kids and don't have to worry too much about stability I would go with the BLE101s, but if you do I'd probably play it safe and go with the i29s.

    Hope that helps!

PJ, I did get your email. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Appreciated your thoughts on the i29 stands as well as your remarks about the 5Bs. Truthfully, I wasn't 100% sure what I was going to do surround speaker wise but I think your email along with my current set up convinced me to go the route of the 5Bs versus the 4Bs or 5DB.
Jason, great to be back. Been putting together my HT living room piece by piece over the last two years. This Xmas it is "Surround Speaker" time. =)
Thanks for your thoughts on those stands. I really love the look and design of the i29; but right now, after doing some hard thinking about placements in my room I am looking really hard at the VTI BLEs (no pets or kids). I just feel getting the surround higher than ear level will make a greater impact. But I am not 100% sure. Maybe that's the beauty of adjustable stands in the first place, options.
If anyone else has any other recommendations for stands I would LOVE to hear them! Please feel free to chime in!

Of course another option would be to put the i29s on a small platform to raise them up a few inches.

Jason, I just noticed that the 5DBs are no longer displaying on the site. Have those been discontinued?
The 5Bs aren’t going to disappear are they?

That's correct the 5DB has been discontinued and there will be a new Verus version that will be launched in January or February.

    I can't wait to see / hear it !!!!!

I'm hoping it's more in a rounded shape to match the Verus lines.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

But let me ask this, if one’s A/V use is 50/50 music/movies and has an Intimus Front Stage how much of a deal would having the Verus line as surrounds/backs? In terms of the tweeter timbre matching issue.

My initial HT plan was to get 2 5Bs for surrounds and then perhaps 2 4Bs for either backs or front heights. I probably won’t be able to afford getting both sets at the same time, and kind of wonder if I should be worried about the Intimus line being phased out pretty quickly.

Not to beat a dead horse since I mentioned this in e-mail, but I'll have a set of 5B's and 4B's for sale in the next couple of months if you're really worried.  I currently use them in exactly the config you mentioned (5B sides, 4B rears).

I have plenty of 5Bs, but in the black finish I could be out of 4Bs by around February or so.

However mixing in Verus surrounds shouldn't be a problem since matching your fronts and center is the most important. If it did bother you for music you can always just listen in two channel.

@PJ, thanks again for the info/offer. I will totally keep that in mind as the time comes for my purchase decision. Have to figure out what I am going to do…and then run it by the wife. ;)

@Jason, thanks for the info on the Intimus. Pretty much what I needed to know. Much appreciated!

Just got my set of 6B's and my 6C and they are unbelievable!  I can't even express how excited I am and I am confident that I made the right choice.

I'm thinking of adding some surrounds and can't decide on 4b's or 5b's and there are couple of reasons I'm struggling. First off my room is long (20') and the seats are in the back corners.  The surrounds I have currently (Harman Kardon HK9's) are in the back and are about 4' away from each other (7.1 setup) but are probably 15-18') from the receiver.  I just worry about the 4b's not being able to hang with the 6's.  The 5b's are probably a better option but seem a little big if they are in the back corner of the room, that close too each other.  One last point to consider is wifey thinks smaller is better .

    Anyone have any thoughts?

If your usage is primarily movies/TV you probably won't notice much of a difference between the 4B and 5B in the surround position.

However if you listen to a good amount of multi-channel music then that's when the increased bass extension and fuller midrange of the 5B will be a benefit.

    Hope that helps!

That's a big help.  It's mostly movies, so I will either decide between the 4BP's or the 4B's.  Thanks.
