Home Theater Review 2011 "Best Affordable Speaker Winner" awarded to the Aperion Verus Grand Speakers!

If you want the price of your speaker to be as real as the experience it creates, then you’re the reason we designed the Verus Grand Tower. We’ve handled the engineering and economics, so you pay thousands less for sound that lands you in the middle of the action. So you’re not watching a car chase—you’re careening around a corner, engine rumbling, tires squealing, pulse racing. You’re not listening to the blues—you’re sitting in a roadhouse in Mississippi, hearing the guitarist’s fingers slide on the strings.

To ensure a true-to-life experience from one end of the spectrum to the other, we combined the Verus Grand Tower’s four proprietary woven Kevlar® woofers and mid-range drivers with our patent-pending Axially Stabilized Resonator™ tweeter. This blissful match recreates movie audio and music just as the artists intended, for pure, powerful waves of sound.

Whether you’re building your dream music system or a home theater that rivals the multiplex, the Verus Grand Tower forms the foundation for performances so immersive you’re part of the show. And even when your ears are taking a break, your eyes will delight in the Verus Grand Tower’s striking good looks.

In 2007 I purchased my first Aperion speakers, the Intimus 5Bs. I used these for years on their own mounted on the bookshelf stands. I was so impressed at how they simply handled everything I threw at them with such responsiveness and clarity. I decided last year I would start completing my HT system with Aperions. I was a little upset Aperion stopped carrying the Intimus family in Cherry. So, I ended up purchasing a closeout opened box 5C Center in Cherry and a new Bravus 8A Sub in black. I was on the fence for a while about the front towers. It wasn't until after having an issue just recently with the Bravus amp and Aperion sending me a replacement amp under warranty that I decided to see if the Verus Grand Towers in Cherry could complete the system.

Let me just say that never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined my completed system sounding this good. I used my Integra 8.9's bi-amp capabilities with the Verus towers for the fronts and used the 5Bs as the surrounds. I did my firsts test with HBO's John Adams miniseries and with Rob Rodriguez's Machette, both Blu-ray discs in DTS-HD Master Audio. The sound stage is stunning for both action scenes or immersing yourself into an entirely natural landscape. When calibrated, the towers and the center literally disappear delivering a broad and enveloping experience. The bookshelf speakers handle the surrounds just as easily as they handled the fronts. And the sub continues to cleanly push out thunderous lows with no distortion.

And they have to be the best looking furniture in my theater. I was worried about this point but it actually works out considering how large and heavy they are. And believe it or not, you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference in finishes unless you put a lot of light and attention onto the Verus and the Intimus cabinets.

My one complaint about the towers is that they are advertised to have metal grilles. Having a cat with claws, this was a huge selling point. They are metal, but they are also covered in fabric which sort of kills this selling point. They are also impossible to remove without the "grill removal tool" which I was unable to find anywhere in the packaging.

All in all, what I got was much more than I expected to get. And with Aperion's proven customer service record I know I couldn't find a better deal on speakers of this caliber.

I've had my VGTs and VGC for a few weeks now and I'm very happy with them. I listened to, bought and returned numerous speakers including the VGBs. The company is great to deal with and I must have been a real pain for them. I bought their speakers, returned them, bought them again and finally upgraded them. After returning the VGBs the first time and buying different speakers I couldn't shake their sound, these speakers really did grow on me. So I bought the VGBs again and this time realized they were the speaker for me....well almost. I did exchange the VGBs for the Towers which I love but honestly I think I'd have been happy with the Bookshelves since I have a pair of SVS subs. The VGBs put out an amazing amount of sound for their size, but the Towers do have more output on the bottom end which you would expect. Also I think the finish is much nicer than most other modestly priced speakers. My only complaint is the quality of the front baffle isn't up to the same standards as the rest of the cabinet. All in all I think these speakers are an excellent value and I can't imagine a company offering better customer service.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these speakers. The velvet bags are a nice touch too.

I have been waiting for years to make the purchase of my wife friendly speakers. I have owned multiple brands over the years. The original wish list was the 633 towers. Wow was I happy to have waited for the Grand Versus towers. Spectacular service and products, I have never been so happy with an audio purchase as I am with Aperion. Make no mistake they are the ultimate in a budget high end audio. Do your self a favor buy me all.

Now to the sound. I have owned Klipsch heritage lines for years. Not wife approved by the way. The Aperions blow the Klipsch away in detail and texture. The fact that they are great foe movies as well as music is the number one reason for my purchase and do they ever deliver. Previous Definitive Technologies were pale in comparison as well. After the break in period the openness is amazing. If you like movies with all the in your face sounds and music with all the nuances recorded and intended to reproduce you better get your credit card warmed up.

These are the newest addition to my home theater setup, but a few months later, I still have the 'Wow' factor I had from the day when I got them cabled up and started using them. I actually purchased them through Amazon (I saw that they were in stock here, but not yet listed on Amazon with the finish I wanted - I called Aperion and they had them up on their Amazon store in about 15 minutes. Amazing service!) as I wanted to burn through a few hundred dollars of gift cards I had.

They're beautiful speakers, and even before I turn them on, I get compliments from family and friends on just how good they look. Once the music starts, however, the compliments stop... because they're as speechless as I was when I first turned them on.

I've never been good with talking about all the specifics of audio - when someone says something has a creamy mid, that doesn't translate to a specific sound, to me. I can't give you a review with a bunch of phrases like that - but I can tell you that these bring music to life unlike any of the speakers and brands I've owned or demoed in the past.

If you love music, you'll love these.

And as for their ability to handle home theater... Equally amazing. They're a building block for the rest of your system (Which Aperion will, I'm sure, be happy to provide as well ;P) and handle their duty as your fronts exceedingly well. To me the sound is as important as the visuals in making a movie immersive, and I've yet to hear anything that can draw me in like these do.
Thanks Aperion! David

Received my Verus Grands yesterday afternoon, and spent the better part of the evening setting them up and calibrating the system. I haven't gotten a lot of listening time yet, but I'm loving what I'm hearing so far. My previous setup was a 9 year old Onkyo HTIB which, at least as far as HTIBs go, was pretty good. But we're talking night and day between them and the Aperions. Especially on the high end, I'm getting a lot more clarity and detail that I simply never noticed before. I watched the opening car chase scene of "Quantum of Solace," and holy crap! I was literally gripping my armrests as the VGs every visceral detail of the flying bullets and screeching metal as car after car was destroyed.

My Blu-ray of "It Might Get Loud" is currently on loan, so I popped in "White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights" instead. I tell ya, if these speakers can keep up with Jack White on the guitar (and they can), there's nothing they can't do.

After that came the "Within Temptation: Black Symphony" Blu-ray, and was once again floored by this immense wall of sound coming from the VGs. And again, I kept hearing tons of new details and even whole instruments that I had not heard before. The band, the orchestra, the singer, and the crowd were all represented well with excellent definition so nothing was lost.

Suffice it to say, I will definitely be recommending Aperion Audio to anyone who will listen to me. Even if they might not be able to afford Verus Grands like mine, Aperion certainly has a diverse lineup that should be able to fit nearly any budget.

As you can see, I became a firm believer of ID companies.
They offer a superior product for the money and they do have to work hard at it since most people prefer a very well known brand.
And some of them make it to big magazine and this is how I found out about Aperion.

First, I have been very happy with my 7 DIY speakers.
Never had the need or the want to change them.
Then after a new line of speaker wish I have no doubt that got very good got reviews and were compared to the aperion which got me to do some reading online.
Went to their site and start reading very good reviews from pro-review and compare them against brand names worth a lots more money (2 to 5 times more).
I got very curious and decided, it was time for a change.

After lots of e-mails back and forth with Aperion I knew their customer service is just as good as all the above mentioned ID companies.
So I did put my order ($5150 after taxes, duties and exchange).

Was it worth it?
YES, I think I got 10% better sound (It come to a point that sometime to get 2-5% is difficult without spending a lot more).
Aperion did that for me.

Outstanding finish (mine are the black satin) and the sound is so clear and clean (my wife said that I am playing the movies louder, I guess loud is good as long as it it clean).
Lots of details (beware they do not forgive bad recording as my previous DIY, if it's there, the speakers will play them. i.e. you will hear the microphone on some recording)
L & R were so easy to set-up, I put my 2 VGT at the same angle as my previous set-up and sounded perfect (either pure luck or they are very very forgiving due the phase plug design [real phase plug]).
L to R or R to L going through the center was perfect to my ears.
Details on the bookshelf as surrounds was creepy (in a good way since I came from Bi-poles side surronds).

This review is more about background and history since I do not have the proper word to describe as how good they sound.
I did get rid of all shipping boxes within a week if as a point of how much I do love them.

I have had so many speakers come and go in and out of my system it's hard to recall
them all. From Revel Studios to B&W 802s to Paradigm Sigs to Maggies to Mythos to Ascend Sierra's to NHT's... on and on the list goes.
Much of this was by design, I wanted to listen to as many different speakers as possible, get to know their sound, their strengths, their weakness,
and how they performed in my listening room.... you should know our listening room is our family room, not the perfect environment for a speaker but it is was it is, so the speaker must be able to not only perform well in it's given space but also look good while doing it.
After all the speaker madness I've put my system (and bank account) through the little women and I came to an agreement that the madness had to stop. It was time to take all I'd learned about which kind of speakers performed best in my listening room, would fit in it's given space and look good doing it....
Enter the Verus Grand Towers and Center...
I'd never heard them before, of course I'd read the rave reviews, both professional and user,
and I'd determined they would physically fit in the space I could provide them....
so would the Ascend Towers and Salk SongTowers both of which I'd considered strongly before deciding the VGTs & VGC had more of what I was after...
curved cabinet design, speakers that could handle both music and movies, more drivers should help with movie dynamics, the ideal center speaker design, and if I didn't like them... free return shipping.
So I placed my order. A few days later the Center speaker arrived, the Towers a few weeks later as they were on back order.
As soon as I unpacked the center speaker I knew one of my speaker criteria had been exceeded.... WOW what a beautiful speaker!
The deep rich cherry finish and smooth curved cabinet design, not to mention its super solid construction.... and the best news, it sounds as good as it looks. Since the VGC has been in our system we haven't missed a word of dialogue.
Female as well as male music vocals are a treat to behold, rich, detailed, never harsh...
dare I say perfect..... really I couldn't imagine a better center speaker at any price!
So when the Towers arrived my expectations were extremely high....
the Towers didn't disappoint, in fact they reinforced the shock and awe we were experiencing from the VGC.... just more of it.
The VGTs have an effortless, smooth sound to them. They go deep, very deep, a quick check with Styke's Basszone CD shows strong bass performance down into the upper 20s. Imaging is spot on, soundstage is wide, deep and surprisingly high or tall. Upper bass and mids are powerful and rich with a sort of effortless presentation that pulls you into the recording. Highs are even better, silky smooth yet with a detail that brings out the "texture" of the recording in a way that makes you want to hear more and more, say goodbye to listener fatigue.
So as you can tell I'm in speaker heaven.
I've finally found a speaker that fills ALL my speaker needs....
Great sound,
Great looks,
Great product support,
Perfect size, (for me)
Double duty performers.... music & movies
Thank You Aperion!

I am not one for giving reviews but I will tell you that I am a very picky person and the Aperions did everything the other reviewers said and more. The professional reviews are spot on and I couldn't be happier. I purchased the VGT. VGC and the Versus Forte surrounds. You will also need the speaker brackets sold by Aperion as they worked perfectly the versu line.I also purchased the speaker wire sold by Aperion and it did make an improvement over the monter cable I was using.I believe the 14 guage will do fine as the monster brand doesn't specify what size but it wasn't as big as Aperions speaker cable and the straight wire looked much nicer. The only problem I had was the center speaker wasn't finished completely around the baffle but a black furniture marker could easily fix the problem but Aperion sent me a replacement. Talk about top notch customer service. These guys are great however it is better to deal with problems on the phone and not by the Aperion chat line.Again the speakers are beautiful and I have had many compliments on the fit and finish and quality of these speakers and they do sound truly amazing on top of all that. I did not realize what I was missing.I had a pair of vintage Polk Audio Rti 800 and they were good for there time but will have to take a back seat to the Aperions I will be adding a Bravus 12d sub latter on to replace the polk 350 I have as soon as I can save up a little money. I also was quite lucky as I just missed the price increase at the beginning of the year but the speakers are definitely worth the price and if I had to pay more for these speakers I would do it in a minute. Again words cannot describe how great these speakers are. Thanks Aperion!!!!! Extremely Satisfied Customer

Hi everybody,

I thought I would share with you my experience with Aperion speakers….

First time I heard of Aperion was earlier this year when my father came back from a trip in the US (we live in Canada).
While on his trip, he had the chance to listen to a complete Verus Forte system and was really impressed, to say the least !
Back home, he went listening to other brands of speakers but he was always coming back to Aperion.
Finally in mid-october, i ordered a complete cherry finish Verus Forte home theater system for him, with the Bravus 8D subwoofer.
The complete system came in 2 weeks later in perfect shape and needless to say the cherry finish is simply gorgeous as others have stated earlier.

We hooked everything to his Anthem MRX 300 and start listening to the Forte towers, no ARC, stereo only and no sub.
I still remember the first song we played, ‘’Your Latest Trick, from Dire Straits’’. To make a long story short, it was simply delightfull, no less.
Immediately the mids and the highs impressed me a lot, with everything being clear and natural.
Because of the size of these little towers, i was not expecting a ton of low end coming out of them, but i was in for another nice surprise.
As expected, they did not blew the roof out of the house but i find out that for their size, they were doing really good with the low end.
During the following days, we played with Anthem ARC and speakers position to get the best out of them and after listening to a lot of music, i ended up being really impressed by their performance.
The room is about 13’ X 16’ with 8’ ceiling and unless we really want deep bass, most of the time the sub is not used when music is played.

For movies, I did not have a chance to listen to any movie on this system so I cannot comment on their performance as a home theater system but judging by their great performance with music, i bet they are going to do well.

Then a couple of days later, back in my home and still stuck with what I call now, the '‘Aperion grin’’ in my face, i decided to pull the trigger for a set of cherry finish VGT as my birthday gift.
I choosed the VGT over the Forte because i have a large room area to fill, the living room, dining room and the kitchen being all open to each other.
I was a bit concerned on how the VGT would perform in a large area like that ......
I placed the order in early November and they came in 3 weeks later in pristine condition.
I hooked them to my MRX 300 and start listening to some music with my wife.
When we heard the first notes coming out of the VGT, we immediately knew they were going to fill the bill.
We spent the rest of the day listening to Mark Knopfler and his band that were followed by Pink Floyd and many other artists for a memorable listening experience that confirmed i had made the right choice with the VGT.

I don’t have the talent of some others here to describe the sound coming out of speakers and english is not my first language so it’s even harder for me to provide you with an highly detailed review on how these towers sounds.
Compare to the Forte, the soundstage coming out of the VGT is larger and of course, they have more low ends.
The sound coming from both towers, the Forte and the VGT, is well balanced with great vocals and highs, everything coupled with really nice bass for music. They really are a joy to listen to.
After listening numerous times to a pair of Tannoy Arden that belongs to a long time friend, and listening to some other good quality speakers over the years, i can tell you the VGT and the Forte are really great speakers, they have a lot to offer for the money.

We did watch some blu-rays with the VGT, using Polk RTi A3 i already have for surround, but no sub and center channel yet.
Nevertheless, this was, and still is, a great experience. Clearly the VGT are at ease in a home theater system, can’t wait to add the VGC center and a sub in 2013.

I did take a chance by ordering the VGT without hearing them.
Add to that that shipping to Canada is free for one way only, we have to pay shipping for return if we don't like them (and i understand the reason for that, i'm not complaining), and you can imagine how nervous i was when i pulled the trigger !
But after 3 weeks listening to the VGT and spending numerous hours playing with the Forte, i still have this '' Aperion grin'' in my face !
I think that says it all, the Forte and the VGT have found new homes.

That's my experience with Aperion, which was great in all aspect !
More pleased than with any other speaker I've owned.... Kurt

I think I have a day or so left on my 30 day trial.

I've played these speakers endlessly, listening as critically as possible with countless different source materials, inviting every neighbor, friend & family member I can to provide a balance to my review and resulting opinion.

Everyone, every single person that I've invited to hear these are extremely impressed with the accurate sound stage, clarity, and dynamic response that these provide.

I completed a step by step review from the day these hit my doorstep with photo's at:

If you're considering these I'd invite you to review my impressions at the link above, along with my extreme satisfaction. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

It took me a while to find these but I\'m so happy I took the chance. I was first impressed with the speed of shipping and then the packaging was nicely done. I fell in love right away when I saw the build quality. I had just returned some Definitive Techs and was not sure about buying speakers without seeing & hearing them first. But I couldn't find many mid-range alternatives locally. I am so glad I took a chance. Wow, they look great and simply sound very nice. Makes me want to play more music. They sound so better than the DF (BP-8060ST) I had recently returned. After returning those I decided no more speakers with the built in subwoofer. Ha, I would say that thse beat the DF speakers even without a subwoofer (to be purchased soon). They sound great with both movies and music. Very Nice. I can't imagine how much better my movie setup will be with the subwoofer. But it can only get better. Nice! My only complaint is the size of the center (large) but I knew that going in so getting it setup properly has been our only challenge. However a challenge well worth it. I'm very happy with thse speakers and would most definitely recommend them to my friends, co-workers, whoever. Anyone looking for super sounding "old school" quality speakers will like these. Build quality is top notch. A bit big and heavy, but so much better for the long haul. I expect these to last for years. Besides there is really no risk or issues with the 30 day return policy. Go for it. I doubt very much you will be sorry.

I have had my Verus Grand Towers for about a year now--and finally made it over here to post my review. These are by far the best speakers I have ever owned and they seem to sound better as time goes on. I have them set up with the Verus Grand Center speaker--and an SVS subwoofer. So I have them set as small/80hz. I use them primarily for movies--set in a relatively small 10x12 closed room--and they are incredible. I also use them for music--mostly streamed through Apple TV from MOG--I listen to a lot of classical music and they are perfect for it. Granted, streaming is not ideal even though MOG has the highest bit-rate among online streaming services, but the sound is impressive none the less. I consider myself a somewhat novice audio/videophile--especially compared to many who have far more impressive systems but I know what I like--and I love these speakers. Next up for me are the Verus Dipole/Bipole Surround speakers. Highly recommended!
Highly recommend Pekka K.

At the moment I use VGT speakers mainly for music listening, satellite radio and DVD. Speakers are connected with OPPO BDP-93 and Denon AVR-3312CI.

Great sounding speakers with beautiful cherry finish. Speakers were delivered on time and well protected. Assembly and setup was easy. After listening VGT over month I\'m very happy of the natural tone of the sound. Crisp highs, clear mid frequencies with deep bass. Classical music, such as Sibelius Finlandia, is sounding the way composer himself wanted to listen it.

I can hardly wait for the next level of Aperion sound magic that will follow after this masterpiece.

As a previous owner of the 6Ts I already knew that I was in for yet another audio treat from the moment I first saw the Verus Grand Towers. The first thing I noticed is how nice the new cabinet design was, more along the lines of Paradigm Studio series. As I was breaking in the new speakers I could already hear the major improvements. The sound of the new tweeter and the new 3 way speaker set up is amazing. I feel like the sound stage is very wide and well balanced. Aperion's speakers are already known for having rich mids in their speakers but now they really raised the bar.Vocals are even more full of life now and are more balanced in the mix. I planned on listening to one or two Norah Jones tracks but ended up listening to two full albums.
No matter what I threw at them they always sent me a smooth detailed sound back. Also a small shout out to how these new speakers handle bass frequencies.I was a little worried that I couldn't get some bass authority out of the new speakers compared to the 6T, but with a few tracks played all worries were over.Even though the new VGTs are not rated as low as the 6T, they have a strong bass presence. I would even go so far as to say the VGTs have more control over the bass frequency. Maybe this is due to a more balanced design of a 3 way speaker.
If you do a knock test on the new speaker it's almost completely dead so that you only hear the music not the box.
For all of you reading this, I truly can say you cannot go wrong with this or any of Aperion's speakers. I love their product and find it to be a great value. They have allowed me to have wonderful speakers without breaking the bank. Also customer service is like no other place I have ever dealt with.
Thank you Aperion!

I have been a fan of Aperion Audio and their products for a few years now and I still thoroughly enjoy the small 5.1 set-up I have on my main level (B5's, 5C, IC's, Bravius 8) which i use for movies, TV, and general music listening. So when it came time to build a more serious home theater system (50% Music, 50% TV/Movies) in my newly finished lower-level, I couldn't wait to get even more Aperion goodness in my home.
Before jumping into Aperion's again, I felt it only prudent to give some other options a listen before making a final decision, so I visited a local high-end audiophile shop where I spent several hours listening to the likes of McIntosh, Totem, and others that cost as much as a car. Finally I came down to earth and spent time with a set of Paradigm studio 100's - which I really liked but which seemed just a bit stale in their tonal quality - perhaps due to the listening room. Having gotten that bug out of my system, I jumped on the Aperion website and discovered the release of their new Verus Grand Towers. After reading the few (but very positive) reviews on them, and the various comments on AVSForum, I decided place my order for a self-indulgent Christmas present of 2 Verus Grand Towers and a Verus Grand Center. (I already had Aperion's for the surrounds). Because they were back ordered for a few weeks due to demand I felt like a kid again waiting for Christmas morning for them to arrive. Once they arrived and I opened them up and was once again pleasantly surprised by the outstanding quality, build, and finish of these beauties as I removed the packaging and the customary Aperion velvet bags that they travel in. Although no SPL meter or white gloves were included this go around, and one of the grills needed to be flipped upside down to conceal a very very minor flaw in the speaker cloth. The towers are about as tall as a standard light switch, and while large and solid seeming, do not to take up much room at all for a tower speaker. The Center is about half the length of the tower, and slightly more narrow, but every bit as beautiful.
Once set -up and calibrated with my Onkyo TX-NR808, I spent a day or so listening to some excellent music recordings by Diana Krell, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd etc., along with some U2, Black Eyed Peas, as well as some great classical pieces. The sound of these speakers was very good right out of the box and that first day was more rewarding than anticipated, but (with a grin in my face as I write this) they began to get better and better sounding as they continued to break in. After 40 or so hours they really began sounding outstanding! They are so clear, so natural and effortless that I would not even consider replacing them with any other option anywhere near their price point. The detailed highs of violins, cymbals, and voices are crisp and clear without being harsh. Both male and female voices are so clear and open that I felt like the singer is in the room, and the quick strength of mid-base and base is so good that I simply can not spend enough time listening to them. It seems that anything I play on them is so clean, open, and detailed, that my entire CD collection is new all over again.
After a few days I added my Bravus 8D sub and watched several moves over the following week or so, including Inception, Iron Man 2, The Hulk, and several others - All on Blu-Ray. Yep, Excellent! As much as I still love my other 5.1 set up, the new Verus set-up in 5.1 is simply outstanding in their sound quality, proper balance, and transparency. While watching "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", it was simply amazing to hear the subtle differences between shotgun shells vs the 9mm shells hitting the ground during a very complex shoot-out scene where all speakers were fully involved, with the sub rumbling, and voices coming from all around. I felt completely part of the move, not overpowered by "speakers", but involved in the story, action, and sounds of what I was watching. I absolutely love these speakers!
One additional benefit to the Verus Grand's is the fact that you can pair them with whatever size subwoofer you want. Unlike speakers that have an internal sub built into the tower, with these beauties you get the tremendous benefit of running them as a true 2 channel with plenty of base authority for all types of music and at whatever volume you can stand, or set it up with any size subwoofer(s) you want that best suits your needs and environment, and still cost the same or less than anything out there that sounds anywhere close to this good. I set my crossover to 40 on my towers which blended very nicely with the Bravus 8D in 2.1, 5.1 mode, yet still allowed me to run the Onkyo in "True Audio" (2.0) and still enjoy all the clean and solid base these towers are capable of. Ultimately I will return my 8D to its previous system and will splurge for a 10 or 12 inch Bravus II sub for movie watching with my Verus system, and continue enjoying music in wonderful 2 channel splendor. After that, I will complete my "all Aperion" home with a set of white Aperion outdoor speakers.
Bottom line, these are the best purchase I have made in years. Glen Z.

I just brought home a set of VGTs last night. My office is down the street from Aperion, and I have been waiting like everyone else for the next shipment. Matt called me about a set of A-stock returns they just received, and was cool enough to hang out after work until I could show up to take them home.
$1528 into the back of my car. I believe they have 2 more sets...
I am a former recording engineer, with a ton of big album credits back in the day, so my concept of good/bad is perhaps a bit more specific than most. My tastes tend toward flat and precise, rather than pretty. I'm the guy obsessing over counting the number of early reflections on a kickdrum, or the ability to hear the studio gate closing on a buzzing guitar track, rather than how big the bottom end is and such (for whatever that is worth).
I set them up in my big live living room next to a pair of B&W CM9s and a set of PSB Synchrony 2s that I have been auditioning, plugged into my Marantz 7005. No Audyssey engaged.
First impressions: these are an absolutely amazing set of speakers. They are very, very flat, and have remarkable detail and imaging. Despite the increased range of the B&W tweeters, the Aperions are far more precise, and have spectacular imaging. Their ability to localize a transient to a point in space, rather than just to a region, is something I have not heard outside a studio control room, at least not to anywhere near this level of precision.
Next to the B&Ws (+$1500), the VGTs had a far more accurate response curve, as verified by my RTA, with none of the cabinet resonances at around 300hz that were so prominent in the B&Ws (one of the least musical frequencies known to mankind). Despite the B&Ws being linear to 22Khz, their imaging was disappointing next to the VGTs, with significantly less precision.
Next to the PSBs (+$2000), the VGTs were almost in a dead heat. The curve, depth of the sound field, and imaging seemed almost identical, however the VGTs had a slightly greater degree of detail despite being a bit less sibilant at around 15k. The VGTs were also somewhat more holographic, and had a better capacity to present a center image than the synchronys.
I put them up against my trusted Meyer HD1s (industry standard powered reference monitors, $8k when still in production), and found that they held their own against these as well. This, I must admit, truly blew my mind.
Unlike virtually every pair of audiophile speakers I have tried, I feel like I may actually be able to mix on these.
Bottom line, these are the best purchase I have made in years.
simply awesome! Joseph B.

after considering several competing brands, i decided to give the aperion verus grand tower's a trial based on the 30-day in-home audition. they arrived very well packaged and completely damage free in just a few days, and were impressive to unpack with each speaker wrapped in their velour bag. including a care kit and the spl meter was an unexpected but appreciated extra.
the speakers look terrific in the cherry finish, on/above par with anything i was previously comparing (paradigm, psb, golden ear, etc.) and are clearly made with top-notch materials and build-quality. setting the speakers up was a breeze, and i proceeded to let them break-in over the next week or so before i began any critical listening to audition them. was i ever in for a treat!
across a range of musical genres these speakers have impressed me far beyond any expectations i had prior to purchase based on some very nice reviews. the sounds are excellent across the range - clear, crisp highs, excellent mid-range and a quality (not-muddy) bass response. this quality extends all the way from low-volume to significantly louder two-channel listening sessions, with the aperion's sounding fabulous at every step. sound staging and imaging are among the best of the brands i compared and are wonderful match to my gear, listening preferences and room.
i coupled these towers with an aperion verus grand center and am happy to report that the excellence continues from the two-channel domain into home-theater, with a wonderful separation but matched sound quality from left-center-right and back as the action on-screen occurs. the verus grand center in the application is outstanding - wonderfully clear dialogue, again at all volume levels.
overall, i couldn't be happier with the aperion's and believe they represent among the best value in home-audio available today. they have a very high-end look/finish that is every bit the equal (or better than) of the big-name brands (and that other internet-direct brands just don't seem to match), with a sound quality that way, way beyond their modest cost. i have been highly recommending these to my audiophile friends, and while they have yet to take in an audition in my home (that's happening soon), i fully expect them to be completely blown away.
thanks, aperion - the verus grand series (tower, center) are simply awesome.

I was introduced to B&W (Bowers and Wilkins) 600 and CM series... I loved these speakers!! The music sounded so natural and clear. But when I auditioned them with movies, I was a little disappointed. Movies did not sound so amazing as with music. So I went ahead a researched most if not all the speaker companies that were in my price range (~$900). I started coming across a lot of reviews on Aperion, although all the high-end HiFi retailers knocked it down... unknown brand name, online only sales, etc... So I kept looking elsewhere. I came across Definitive Technologies and they are amazing with movies!! WOW!!! But play some music threw them and they'll fall short... And I can't afford two sets of speakers; music (B&W) - movies (Definitive Tech)... lol
So I broke down and decided to give Aperion a try...I called and spoke with them about their 30 day audition policy, shipping, etc and I felt a lot better about dropping all that cash for something I was unsure of...
When I got the boxes, I was blown away at the size of the box!! HUGE and HEAVY!!
I was pleasantly surprised to see how well they were packaged and I loved the velvet bag they are wrapped in; I am definitely keeping this packaging in case I ever move. Anyway... The finish is gorgeous, they even included gloves to handle the speakers with... I thought it was to avoid finger prints and smudges, but its so you can grip the speakers!! The piano finish is so smooth and the speaker is soooo heavy, that you can't grip it with your bare hands, it just slides...
OK, so when I cranked up my stereo I was impressed with their sound quality!! They sounded just like the B&Ws!!! Very clear and natural sounding. I was hearing things in songs I never heard before!! And the bass these towers make was really surprising since they have relatively small drivers... but you'll swear there is a sub somewhere!!! Music sounds fantastic!!! I don't even fire up the sub anymore!!
Moving on to movies, the sound quality was awesome!!! For the first time, these speakers had me jumping out of my seat!!! And I thought my previous 12 year old Infinity setup was great; they now sound like crap compared to the VGTs. The towers sounded so awesome, I ended up watching movies in stereo because it sounded that much better than my 5 channel Infinity setup. The imaging was just amazing!!
So, my original plan was to try out the towers for a couple of weeks and decide if I really wanted to keep them, then see if I was going to purchase the center and surrounds later on. Well, the next day I ordered the Verus Grand Center... then a couple of day later the Verus Surrounds. Subs are on the horizon!!
These Verus Grand Towers are awesome speakers!!! Totally blew my expectations away!!!
I highly recommend these to everyone!!!
Thanks Aperion for all your help and for offering such a great product!!!

I've now had the Verus Grand Towers for about 8 months. I was most impressed right out of the box and I'm still discovering nuances in many of my recordings I hadn't heard before. You can't go wrong with these if you have a large enough area where you can take advantage of the room-filling sound. I searched long and hard for speakers to replace my 30-year old DCM Time Windows and I think I solidly found them. Great work, Aperion!

When buying speakers like these, you are going for a long term investment (at least for me). I wanted something I could buy and be happy with for the next decade with no looking back. Thus far, no regrets. Great sound (I am not a trained ear, but they sound great to me), a great finish, and a responsive company behind them whenever I have a question. My current setup probably doesn't do them justice in terms of using a HQ amplifier and optimal seating arrangements, but I feel confident as I move forward in life, that these will outperform as I upgrade the other portions of my home theater setup.
I look forward to challenging these towers in the future.

I was looking for speakers to replace my Klipsch satellites in my bedroom. I listened to B&W speakers that sounded very good and Definitive Technologies, but after reading reviews and forums, I decided to give these towers along with the bookshelves and the center grand speakers a try. The return policy was too good not to try them. I was quite impressed in the improvement of sound, so much so that I preferred to stay in the bedroom and listen to music and movies. Then a thought? What if I had another Grand Tower setup for the living room to replace my large Klipsch system? I called Aperion and bought the second set. These speakers made the large Klipsch system sound bad especially in the mid range. No longer do I hear the brightness screeching from horns. The Klipsch had 12" woofers but the Aperion Towers put them to shame with clarity at every range: bass, mids, and highs. The Aperions are very smooth and do not shy away from power when needed. I am very happy with my decisions.
You can't go wrong. It's just that simple. Joel M.

I upgraded from a set of 5T towers that have since found a new home back in the media room. My listening set-up is nothing fancy--a modest sized living room with plenty of bookcases but no pretenses of acoustic treatments, an Onkyo receiver with plenty of power but no aspirations of matching a dedicated amp, and a late model Aperion Sub with plenty of low but no misconceptions about winning Johnny-on-the-spot speed races.
I can't say that I ask much of my Grands. Be there when I get home after long hours of working and schlepping around a world of cantankerous sound. Be unassuming enough to make my wife take two weeks before she can put her finger on exactly what changed in the living room. Be honest with the sound I feed you and do your best to give musicians their proper space, emotion, and delivery.
I'll let you know if they ever let me down...

Let me begin by saying I do not have the expertise in audio electronics that many of the other review writers have. I spent about 6 months researching my future purchase of equipment. I finally purchased two Verus Grand Tower speakers, one Verus Grand Center Channel speaker and a Marantz SR7005 tuner. One of the primary reasons I chose the Aperion line is it's ability to pack plenty of sound in a small space. In planning my system I had restrictions on the size of the components. I was a little reluctant with making such a large purchase approximately $4500.00 without hearing the system, so the 30 day no risk trial at home eased my nerves. The speakers on appearance only are flawless beautiful pieces that are second to none. Depending on the type of music I listen to makes the difference in the sound. After having my system set up for about two months I can say that the sound produced while watching movies surpasses that of just listening to music. I am still learning how to use all the features that the receiver I purchased has and quite frankly dont believe I will use it to it's max potential. In dealing with customer service Aperion reps were always helpful with the many questions I had when it came to putting what I wanted together. I have only 1 suggestion. When Aperion Customer Service is taking an order for equipment it could help to ask the customer what their level in experience is with setting up audio equipment. If the customer has a limited amount of experience it would be helpful if the Customer Service Rep suggests NOT attempting to set up the system on a Saturday or Sunday when Aperion Customer Service is closed. Rather wait and set it up when Customer Service is available to help with questions. As you can imagine this happened to me. It's a bit disheartening looking at $4500.00 woth of beautiful equipment that can't play a note of music. Eventually I got the system up and running with the help of an Aperion staff member who I might add was quite baffled with the same problems I was having. All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and believe that I will enjoy this system for many years to come, maybe by then I will have learned how to use my receivers features. I only knocked off 1/2 a star from customer service because I couldn't reach them when I needed them most during a Saturday or Sunday.

Audioholics' Aperion Verus Grand Tower Speaker System Review
Performance Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Value Rating: 5 out of 5

"At just over $3k for a 5.0 system and an extra grand for a the Bravus II 12D sub, the Aperion Audio Verus Grand speakers are not an impulse buy. But they're not meant to be. Aperion has attempted to put together the very best speakers they can for the least amount of money. I have to say, unequivocally, they've succeeded. The Verus Grand Towers image as good if not better than any speaker I've ever experienced (sans electrostats). The Verus Grand Center is a joy to experience and makes a huge difference with listening to multichannel content. Our in-room and manufacturers measurements of the speakers are remarkably similar showing that not only has Aperion created a speaker that can measure well in a lab, but can do so in a real world environment. With Aperion's free shipping and 30 day in home audition with free return shipping if you don't like them, well, you've really got nothing to lose. Except for $3k because there is no way you're sending these back."

"The Aperion Audio Verus Grand Loudspeaker System has redefined, for me, value in high end, which is why they earned the Audioholics coveted 2010 Product of the Year Award. These are the speakers to beat and will likely send many of their competitors back to the drawing boards, or in their cases, their engineering sound labs. Highly Recommended!"

Digital Trends Review of the Verus Grand Speaker
"Aperion Audio has quietly thrown down the gauntlet with the Verus Grand speakers. With performance this stellar, Aperion could easily get away with charging more but, instead, chooses to offer the Verus Grand for $1,800 a pair, delivered to your home or office with no added shipping charges. In doing so, they have posed a serious challenge to makers of speakers that charge $5,000 just to sniff their products.

"Is the Verus Grand the best speaker ever? Of course not. Aside from sound appreciation being a very personal choice, the fact is that better-sounding speakers do exist; but to get at them, you're going to have to take out a second mortgage on your house."

"That Aperion Audio can get you so dangerously close to audio nirvana for just $1,800 means that, for us, this is the speaker to beat for the time being. To overtake the Verus Grand, a speaker will need to even further test the law of diminishing returns. For that reason, we've decided to keep the Verus Grand around as a reference speaker, therefore making it a literal Editor's Choice."

GoodSound! "Great Buy" Award for the Aperion Verus Grand Tower Speakers
"...I can't imagine being more impressed with an audio product than I was with the Verus Grand Tower. Aperion Audio has ticked off all the areas you'd want ticked off by a floorstanding loudspeaker: clean, textured, articulate, full-range sound; solid build quality and a beautiful finish; nice touches such as dual sets of binding posts and magnetically attached grilles; and a price well under $2000/pair.

"Reviewers sometimes like to speak of gateway products -- components that give consumers a taste of the high end, and that hopefully will make them want to further explore our hobby by buying more expensive products that perform even better. Well, Aperion's Verus Grand Tower is no mere gateway product. It ushers you inside, sits you down at the table, and invites you to participate fully in the music. This speaker is a tremendous performer and an even better value. I just love it. I think you would, too."

Home Theater Review Evaluates Aperion's Verus Grand Tower Speakers
"Overall, the Verus Grand Tower Speakers proved to be as adept at movies as they were music, proving to me that they can easily pull double duty as both an audiophile loudspeaker as well as a home theater one."

"For just under $1,800 a pair the Verus Grand Tower Speakers from Aperion Audio are a budget audiophile and home theater enthusiast's dream come true. They look far more high end than any other Internet direct offering, sound as good as some of the best in the business and can be delivered straight to your door for a 30-day in-home audition. What is even more amazing is that if you're willing to pair the Verus with more up-market components they'll reward you handsomely."

"They're hard to beat - especially when you consider their sub $2,000 price tag. For the audiophile on a budget or the home theater enthusiast looking to lay claim to a more refined, high-end sound then I recommend taking advantage of Aperion Audio's 30-day in-home trial on new pair of Verus Grand Tower Speakers for I doubt many will send them back."

Aperion Grand Tower Speakers at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest
"Without question, the best value of the show, bar none? the Versus Grand Tower would be a good bargain at $5000 a pair. It would compete well with products that I've seen at that price point and I'm sure it would win in some head-to-head matchups. At half that price, $2500 per pair, they would be a steal, undercutting in price most of what's out there, and not by a small margin. The most amazing thing is that they're priced at just $1798 per pair, which floored me when I first heard it. I thought they must have meant each, so I double-checked. That's for a pair! Hopefully you'll now begin to sense how truly exceptional these speakers are in terms of value for what you get and understand why I'm so excited by them. What's more, they come with a ten-year warranty, double what most speakers have, even the ones that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Without question, Aperion Audio's Verus Grand Tower was the star of RMAF 2010 for me."

"The Verus Grand Towers continued to impress me on two-channel music...The Verus Grand Towers reproduction of detail was exceptional on good source material. With everything from the gentle sound of a brushed cymbal to the liveliness of a good vocal recording, they left little or nothing on the table. Imaging and depth (when captured in the recording) were also consistently convincing."

"With all 5.1 channels cooking, the result was superb. Dialogue, source permitting, sounded right. There was no evidence of an intelligibility-robbing, off-axis response suckout in the Verus Grand Center, which also stood up without complaint against the onslaught of action-heavy soundtracks. From Flight of the Phoenix (2004) to Star Trek (2009), nothing fazed either the Verus Grand Center or the rest of the system."

Features

New One-inch Aperion Axially Stabilized Radiator™

We engineered the new silk dome ASR to handle frequencies beneath most tweeters. Now the mid-high frequencies emit the same crystalline tones as their counterparts in the penthouse. From the pluck of a violin string to the screech of tires, the result is pure, authentic sound.

Two 6" Kevlar Woofers

We use the strongest material coupled with extra-long voice coils to decrease distortion and bring in those low frequencies you love. Strong enough to drive the low end without a dedicated subwoofer, the bass response of the Grand Tower is truly inspiring.

Two 5" Kevlar Midrange Drivers with Aluminum Phase Plugs

Two mid-range drivers with aluminum phase plugs increase the Verus line’s power handling and dynamic range, filling the middle of the sonic spectrum. By recreating the full harmonics of a singer’s voice, the Verus Grand speakers produce vocals as rich as the Rockefellers.

Furniture-Grade Finish

The slim curves of the Verus line’s first-rate cabinetry make us think "supermodel"—but the primo acoustic qualities means she’d have to sound as good as she looks. The finishing touch for every Verus speaker is a high-gloss cherry-wood veneer or piano-black lacquer that’s so right for every décor, your coffee table will be jealous.

Bi-ampable 5-way gold-plated binding posts

Bi-ampable is the techie way of saying you can connect one amplifier to the woofer and the other to the combined mid and tweeter. Separating the low- and high-frequency wiring helps eliminate interaction, isolate power and reduce distortion.

The 5-way gold-plated binding posts let you connect your speakers any which way you choose: bare wire, banana plugs, spades, round pins or flat pins. Not only does the gold plating give your system some bling, it also serves a more practical purpose: to resist corrosion and provide the best possible connection to your receiver.

Magnetically Held Perforated Metal Grilles

To protect the speaker innards from accidents, pets or curious fingers, the entire Verus line sports perforated metal grilles that let sound flow through unchecked, improving imaging and reducing high-frequency reflection. Hidden magnets hold the grilles in recessed baffles.

Floor Spikes and Feet

Each Verus Grand Tower speaker comes with a set of floor spikes and feet. Isolating the cabinet from the floor can reduce vibrations and produce tighter bass.
