How about a good movie to watch.......

WE have the worst movies, now how about a good movie. Not the best movies in the world, but just some GOOD movies to watch. Remember if a movie has been mentioned in the worst movies post it does not qualify for this post by default, so there. Now the first suggestions..........................

No fair commenting untill you have seen the movie. Now get some snacks, turn down the lights, warm up the Blu-ray player, turn on the receiver and ROLL-UM!

Howl's Moving Castle - made in 2004 animated (kids and adults will like this one)

Brother - made in 1997  russian

Dinner Rush - made in 2001

    Rabbit-Proof Fence - made in 2002 Australian

Things Change - made in 1988

The Red Violin - made in 1998

The Station Agent - made in 2003

    Confidence - made in 2003

Death at a Funeral - made in 2007

Barry Lyndon - made in 1975

Local Hero - Made in 1983

The Usual Suspects - Made in 1995

I have not seen most of you list but I would like to comment on two of them.

Howl's Moving Castle - made in 2004 animated (kids and adults will like this one) .... this should include almost anything else that Hayao Miyazaki has made.

The Usual Suspects - Made in 1995 .... a must see

    Cheers

I just got The Usual Suspects on BD and watched it on Sunday.  SUCH a great movie.  Amazing, even.

I don't have a lot of "off the beaten path" movies to add, but some that I gave a chance, and was happy that I did:

    - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - 2005 - Great humor, cool murder-mystery type, and hilarious narration by RDJ.

    - The Incredible Hulk - 2008 - The Ed Norton one...this was good!  And the tie-in at the end was brilliant.

    - Made of Honor - 2008 - I know it's a chick flick, but I thought it was clever and hilarious. Even charming.

    - Death Race - 2008 - will rock your Aperions and very cool cast and visuals.  Very pleasantly surprised with this one

    - Get Smart - 2008 - Laughed with this one more than I thought I would.

And these two aren't on BD, but I still recommend them highly:

    Zero Effect - 1998

    Primary Colors - 1998

Re: How about a good movie to watch.......

Hmmm for me Howl's Moving Castle was just OK, especially compared with some of the other Miyazaki movies like Spirited Away and Princess Monoke that are amazing.  Especially Spirited Away, if you haven't seen it yet go rent it immediately!

Here's a few selections from my Netflix account that I have rated as "five stars":

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989):  criminally underrated, one of Terry Gilliam's best, with great performances from the likes of Eric Idle, Jonathan Pryce, Robin Williams and Sarah Polley.

    Aliens (1986):  Best sequel ever?

Big Lebowksi (1998): it really does get funnier each time I watch it

Blade Runner (1982) : One of the best sci-fi movies of all time, I prefer the original version myself, I think the narration helps create the Film Noir feeling.

Caddyshack (1980):  "So I got that going for me, which is nice."

Children of Men (2006) :  Brilliantly directed action sequences and thought provoking.

Evil Dead 2 (1987) : Comedic horror at its finest

Fifth Element (1997): Great effects and just fun

Ghostbusters (1984): "Back off man, I'm a scientist!"

Hudsucker Proxy (1994):  Gets my vote for most underrated Cohen Bros. film.

The Player (1992):  One of the best movies about making movies ever.

    Star Wars Original Trilogy:  duh.

Waiting for Guffman (1996):  Best in Show seems to always get more love, but this one is my favorite of the Christopher Guest comedies.

Here's a lesser known gem:  Baraka (1992), it's really just a collection of amazing visuals from around the globe set to music.  It shows lots of people in stunning ethnic dress involved in rituals, some incredible nature footage and some cool time lapse stuff too.  It's one of the most visually striking movies I've ever seen.  The guy who directed it was the director of photography on a similar movie called Koyaanisqatsi that is worth checking out too, but I like this one better.

Hudsucker Proxy gets my blue letter of recomendation also.

How about "Time Bandits" another Terry Gilliam movie.

Yeah any Terry Gilliam movie is worth watching and most of them are outstanding (although I haven't seen his last couple and supposedly Brothers Grimm sucked), but the Baron is my favorite.  Time Bandits hasn't really aged that well in terms of the effects but I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid.  Brazil and 12 Monkeys would probably round out my top 3 non-Monty Python Gilliam movies.

The best movie experience I have had since I got my home theater has been Batman Begins. Visuals are above average, and sonically, this movie is amazzzzzzzzing!

I prefer it to the Dark Knight, but I know that I might be in the minority on that. Don't get me wrong...Dark Knight is excellent...but Batman Begins to me is better.

If you have a family with kids, Ratatoui (sp) is the best visually I have seen to date.

What about Wall-E?  I thought that even beat out Ratatouille in terms of visuals.  Great movie too, IMO.

I have not picked up Wall-E yet, but it is on my short list fer sure. I have heard excellent things about it. I am always late to the party, as I like for the prices to go down before buying. I never rent....only buy.

Wall-E is good. Buts lets not forget what makes a good movie. It's not always special effects. A good movie has to have a plot, a good script, and good acting. Alot of movies don't have those qualities.

    How about

    Snatch - made in 2000

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - made in 1998

These are two really good Guy Richie movies.

I just saw Transporter 3 last night. It's just OK, Transporter was very good, Transporter 2 was junk, and #3 was just OK. A few inconsistencies, which I caught while watching the movie, the worst was the window in the car gets smashed and in later scenes it's not smashed. There were other inconsistencies, but that was the most glaring.

I thought it was not smashed, too, and that annoyed me.  But then I remembered that he had the car in the shop and was on a phone during a scene shortly after that.  I'm pretty sure the intention was that he was getting his window fixed.

Agreed that the movie was "ok"...but barely.  Honestly, that chick could not possibly have been a worse actress.  And she wasn't nearly hot enough to make up for it.  The action parts were cool, but the plot and dialogue made my skin crawl.

A friend of mine told me when I get my system hooked up to watch Saving Private Ryan, he said the beginning of the show makes you feel like your right in the middle of the gunfire.
