    My HT, finally

It has been a long wait since ordering my speakers back in June at the HE show in LA.  Ahhh, but it has been well worth it.  After a couple of false starts (had to swap the Sony since it was DoA and Comcast brought the wrong set-top), everything is up and running.  I haven't done any EQ yet, just manual config of the speakers.  Just 3 HDMI cables and one Denon Link (and yes I do have the set-top going through the AVR via HDMI, just need the latest version with the firmware upgrade).  Movies sound and look great, CDs sound sweet, and the couple of SACD's I have are awesome.  Now if I could just get my wife to let me crank it a bit more...

Holy cats Ken!!  What's your speaker layout?  That's insane!

I'm surprised you didn't go with an array of four S-12s up front though, I'm a little disappointed

Wow, Ken. Glad to see you left a little room for a couple more 634-VACs on top--those two could get a little lonely up there (not to mention overwhelmed). Now, I hope you left a few bucks for beers... DL Smith

    RE: My HT, finally

The 634s can definitely hold there own and make there presence known!  Beer money is a little tight right now, but I hope to manage a six pack or two

I caught the Tony Bennett special last night and it sounded great in HD/5.1.

    Ken,

Your HT arrangement is amazing!  So do you have stock in Aperion or what?  Your entertainment center/cabinetry is beautiful.  Obviously, it's a custom job- did you do that yourself?  If so, will you come to my house and do mine?  If not, please send the builder to my house.  Congratulations on your HT and your beautiful home.

    Ken,

NICE JOB!!  Quick someone call the DEA, the power going here is way too much.  Something illegal must be growing!!

I think Aperion needs to give you a paid position.

    RE: My HT, finally

Thanks guys!  Yes, its custom, we had it done as part of the remodel on the main level of our home. We made an early trade-off not to have a dedicated HT room but rather an open great room where the kitchen, family, dining, etc all run "seamlessly" together.  The entertainment area is set-off in one corner with full view from the kitchen/dining/etc.  There are trade-offs with sound and ability to use a front projector, but this set-up fit our life style better.

I was popping in on the Aperion folks enough that they probably think I do work there (one of the benefits of being in the Portland area)

Ken, your custom cabinet is exactly what I am look for.  Can you please tell me the height from the floor to the counter top that your television/front speakers are sitting. I have a two year old, so my cabinet may have to be a little higher. thanks, matt

    RE: My HT, finally

    Howdy Ken,

I have some questions about your setup... hope you don't mind, they are mostly the "why" kind.

How far way is your sofa from the screen? How large is your open space?

Why did you go with a set of 633's and 533's for the left and right channels? Did you feel there was missing sound? Why not make them the same (2 sets of 633's or 533's)?

Why 2 centers?  It may be answered above if you seating position and room is rather large.

Why the 633 surrounds? They look very close to your seating. Knowing how loud mine are, it seems like they would blow off your clothes if you got carried away in a movie.... maybe that is the idea?   In my setup, if you are too close to the 633's, the sound field is not very blended (you hear the individual drivers), do you have that problem?

Do your outlaw monoblocks power the L/R/C? Do you have each pair of speakers simply wired in parallel? Do those amps handle that kind of load without overheating or shutting down?

Thanks! Setup looks great and has definate "wow" factor.

    RE: My HT, finally

    James:

All good questions, answers will have some logic and some just because I am bit crazy and went over the top (and like it that way).

Screen to sofa is 14'.  The entertainment area is in one corner of a much larger open space including kitchen/dining/living/family.  When we remodeled, we decided to remove the walls and have one large area that flowed together.  The entertainment area is roughly 18' x 20' with the whole open space being roughly 36' x 42'.  The idea for the entertainment is that music and movies/super bowl could be clearly seen/heard from just about anywhere in the entire space.

Ahhh, the 533s.  Originally, I ordered a 6 series system and later after hearing the 533-T decided I wanted a pair for the study (separate part of the house) to listen to music.  Once I got everything, I couldn't help tinkering and wanted to see what they would sound like in the main entertainment area in combo with the 633-T.  As it turns out, I really do like the combination, in particular for music.  I am still experimenting and have not decided when/if I will move them to the study.  To answer your question directly, no I did not think anything was missing. But I must say the mid to upper mids are fuller with the 533-T combo (why I like it).  I don't think it makes much difference for movies.

2 centers - a couple of reasons, 1) I had often read that when you have a large open space that two centers can help give better definition to the dialog.  the recommended configuration is to have one just above (tilted down) and just below (tilted up) the screen converging on the main listening area.  Unfortunately, the ideal set-up wasn't practical in my case hence why I ended-up with what I have (works better to fill the entire room anyway).  2) Unfotunately I have a slight loss of hearing and always found the dialog to be difficult to understand, especially in movies with large dynamic ranges (whispered dialog to large crashes/explosions).

633 surrounds - there are a number of issues that came up that led to this decision 1) there aren't any walls to hang speakers on, (large picture window on only wall side)  2) hanging from ceiling in middle of room was unacceptable to wife and would block views  3) in ceiling was unacceptable to me (just did not like the sound for surround and especially not for music)  4) I looked at several stands, but the costs for what I liked was not much different than buying the tower (stand + 632 close to 633), 5) overall footprint of stand and speaker not much different than tower 6) Liked the look of the tower versus book shelf and the stand.   In case you are wondering, I wanted direct radiating speakers for music (just prefer them over dipole/bipole).  The loudness is not an issue, just tuned accordingly.  Closeness is an issue as you described.  The rears are a few feet behind and are fine but the sides are close so that if you are at the end of the coach you are within about a foot and does not blend well (the center of the coach on the other hand is awsome).  But bookshelves would have had the same issue.  I will be experimenting with different layouts in the future subject to wife constraints

Nothing is in parallel or series for that matter so there is not any load issues.  Each speaker has its own amp.  Seven channels on 4306 in normal config and I then use the pre-outs of L/R/C to the monoblocks  (same as what you typically do for a powered sub (low level sub pre-out)).

If anything is not clear, just ask.

    RE: My HT, finally

Wow, that's perfectly clear.  I'm impressed that you were willing to give up the 533Ts from the study for the living room.  Of course if you do all your music listening in there then what's the big deal right?

    Mike
