    extending speaker wire

Hi all.  I just got a new entertainment center and my receiver moved over a couple feet.  Now my speaker wires (which are inaccessible inside a wall and ceiling) running to my two in-ceiling speakers are a bit too short to reach my receiver.  I could rearrange everything to make it work, but I like it the way it is and I would prefer not to disconnect and reconnect everything again if I can come up with a better solution.  I'm afraid if I connect the current wire to another one I will degrade the audio quality.  Is there a good way to do this without decreasing the quality of the sound coming from my in-ceiling speakers?  I'm using them for surround sound, but I want to support my aperions with good signals so they can really shine!  Thanks in advance for your input.

    Georgie,

If you are really industrious, you could strip some of the insulation back and solder on a new length of speaker cable (I'd also have some heat shrink tubing on the new end ready to slide over the soldered connection and shrink on).  That will give you probably the most secure and best connection.

However, simply connecting the leads of one wire with the same leads of another using wire nuts should give you a very good connection and one that is completely fine for good signal transfer.  Not to mention that it is much easier to do than soldering.

Another alternative is to terminate the existing wires at a wall plate that would act as a coupler for the extension. A bit more expensive than soldering the extensions (or using nuts as suggested) but if you ever move things in the future you'd simply plug in a longer wire.

If you can't have fun doing it, it's probably not worth doing.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions.  I went ahead and soldered the wires.  Just kidding - I'm no where near that handy.  Wire nuts worked fine.  I would've really liked to have installed the wall plate but these speaker wires exit the wall at the same place as all the wires for the distributed audio so the wall plate wouldn't work out.
