    UF2:

See that is thing, i really don't have that many things to hook up. I have a PS3, Panasonic DVD player (component), and an Ipod. I don't have cable, but am planning on getting it. Does the upconversion really improve the SD cable picture?

806 - more features than i probably need.

805 - highly recommended, but is a beast in size and weight.

606 - also recommended, but heard it has a PS3 buzzing problem?

Based on what you just told us, I really think the 805 is the way to go for you. Enough HDMI inputs, no real problems (with the most current firmware), and lots power to push your speakers. Also, with the 805's weight, you're getting your money's worth as far as a weight-to-dollar ratio ;)

    Russ,

I heard about the PS3 "hum" issues in a AVS thread on the 606 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1026622&page=96

When i consider the 805, my frame of thinking is "why don't spend the few extra hundred and get the latest IF it is better".

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to post. I know these type of questions get asked all the time. Really appreciated.

Just because something is the latest doesn't mean it is actually better :)

Thanks for the link.  Read through it, very interesting, sounds like it is a combination issue with the 606 and ps3 both not exactly behaving.  Sounds like there is a simple fix if you only have a 5.1 system.  It may have been fixed in the latest firmware according to one poster.

Oh well, I am not ready to get a new AVR yet anyway, my 503 is working fine for me.  I got it at circuit city a few years back as an open box return unit, heck of a deal.  I am not usually an early adopter anyway.

    Cheers

    Dan,

Exactly! That is why i used a big IF, since newer is not always better.

I think i am going to wait and see what the reviews are on the 806 and how it compares side by side the 805.

I know a lot of people on the forums are Onkyo fans and know that Onkyo generally puts out a great product, however, I strongly encourage you to look at Harman Kardon as well.  The new models 254 (which I own) and 354 are superb in quality and output.
Do or do not, there is no try.

    Patrick,

Thanks for some other options. I'm not locked into Onyko. I am just looking for the most bang for the buck and a reciever that has the less "problems" or crappy customer service.

    Will check those out.

I think i have found something that meets might needs.

    Pioneer VSX-1018

I can get it at my Navy Exchange for $549. Read up on it and it seems pretty good.

    Thoughts?

Pulled the trigger.............since i'm in Hawaii, i had to pay for shipping. We always get screwed on shipping. We are apart of the US you know. In the Navy, so i have been living here for about 13 years.

    Bought: 5T / 5C / 4B / 8D / 5.1 wire kit / wall mounts

Tried to use some promocodes, but the ones that were around were for stuff that i didn't need.

After researching, i am going with the Pioneer 1018. Haven't heard anything negative about it, and am going to get it for about 470.00 from BB. If i don't like it, i can always return it. Was a hard choice between the 606.  It's going to be my first receiver, so i really don't have anything to compare it too.

Thanks for all the inputs and feedback.

    Peace,

    JG

Sounds like a great system.  I am sure you will enjoy it,  And oh, I do feel sorry for you having to pay shipping, after all, isn't having to live in PARADISE enough punishment!

     Cheers
