Metal head from Philly here.  Looking into speakers and a receiver.  Leaning towards a Pioneer Elite SC 27 and going back and forth between Aperion or B&W speakers  (leaning twoards the Aperions).  Bands I'm into :   Agalloch, Be'Lakor, Insomnium, Opeth, Katatonia, Amorphis...mostly melodeath.

    Hi folks,

I'm in the market for new speakers and have a few questions. I posted over at AVS Forum without much luck so far.

How do the Aperions handle distortion and/or multiple frequencies? Mostly referring to Heavy/Death/Black Metal music. I've heard people listening to (c)rap and r&b on cheaper than dirt speakers and it sounds ok (to them). I can't get past the headache myself. But when I play my music on said speakers, SQ is horrible.

Don't get me wrong, I love classic rock and some alternative as well and like classical. But it always seems I need a better system than average for Metal to sound good. If they can make metal sound good, then I will be pleased with movies.

I'm thinking a system based around the 6T towers for front. I'm also looking at gettting the SVS PB-13 Ultra sub, so bass should be covered.

I had a 1999 Honda Civic Hatchback, and put in JL Audio 6.5 components, 6x9's and a 12" sealed sub with Kenwood Excellon amps and it sounded amazing. Take the same CD and play it on a cars  factory system and it's horrible. Bass was tight, especially the fast paced double bass kicks. I think the range that I'm talking about is mid-bass. Most cheap speakers lack that. Most r&b stuff is bass and treble eh?

My benchmark CD is basically any Opeth album. Both Watershed and The Grand Conjuration have absolutely the best dynamic range and musical ability that I have ever heard. Acoustic to Distortion, Folk to Death Metal and great synthesizer. The vocal prowess of Michael Akerfeldt going from clean to growl is hands down the best talent I have ever heard. I usually don't like like clean male vocals, but this guy is an exception.

With the pending purchace of a new home, I will finally have a living room big enough for a good 5.1 system. I will mostly be watching TV with the fam and maybe a BR once a week. Depending on how much the wife likes the sound, we may listen to more music. My music will only be played while the wife is not in the house, at nosebleed levels LOL!

While I don't listen to death metal, I listen to a lot of heavy stuff like Sepultura, Pantera, Biohazard, etc. and it all sounds great on my 6Ts.  I have a pair of SVS PC-13 Ultras that I use to supplement the low end in the 6Ts (the 6Ts go plenty low by themselves, by the way).  Like Jason said in the forum that directed you to this one, the Aperions don't add or subtract anything to the music- what you hear is what was recorded.  If it's a crappy recording, the sound quality will be crap (although the music can still be enjoyable if you're head banging and not just sitting there listening critically).  I've never heard the 6Ts struggle with anything I've thrown at them (from metal to classical to pop to jazz to rap - basically, I listen to everything except country).  With Aperion's killer in-home audition policy, you've really got nothing to lose in trying them.

    Thanks nbuchen,

That's what I wanted to hear. I would still catagorize Sepultura and Pantera as metal, and I love them. Listening to Far Beyond Driven in my old Civic made me notorious. Not many people expect to hear metal coming from a thumping bass system. I always got weird looks.

I agree with nbuchen, 'it all sounds great on my 6T's.' I also have not heard the 6T's struggle with any metal thrown at them. In fact, it is the 6T's that have brought me back to metal. The 6T's have infected me with audio upgrade sicness. Invested in Krell 250a and 250a/3 to drive 6T's, a 6C, and two 6B's. No sub needed for music with 6T's IMO, maybe later for HT.

This forum has exposed me to some great albums by bands like Sepultura  and Testament. I also discovered new stuff by Five Finger Death Punch, 2Cents, Shadows Fall, and Throwdown (who at times sound like Pantera) because of the Aperions.

Intrigued I am now with Opeth. My local metal shop praises Blackwater Park. I am listening to Watershed on myspace. What are your top album referrals for this band you call Opeth?

Re: Any metalheads here want to talk? - At The Gates!

Just got the new At The Gates triple DVD, and just watched a little of it so far (a concert from a couple years ago in Germany I think), but it is fantastic!

It is high quality video for a DVD, and the sound is incredible, a great workout for my Aperion system. The 6Ts sound just killer!

Oh, where do I begin? Opeth is a very complex band. I associate them with classical music. So many variations in their songs can not classify them as one genre of music. But, overall they are still metal. I own all of their albums, and they are all great in their own way. The earlier stuff tends to be more Black Metal, while their new albums explore music complexity. They really compose music, not just play a riff and write some lyrics around it. I'll give a brief review of a few albums. All my own personal opinion.

Watershed - A great follow up to Ghost Reveries. Opeth continue to stretch the bounds of metal. The first track, Coil will mislead you. It is very mellow and harmonious. Great acoustic guitar paired with Akerfeldt's phenominal voice. The Lotus eater is my favorite track. Can't pass up a great keyboard solo.

Ghost Reveries - My favorite overall Opeth album. Each track is unique. Reverie/Harlequin Forest is my favorite track on this one.

Damnation - The "good" twin of what should have been a two disc set with Deliverance. All tracks are sung with clean vocals. I think this is a must listen for any Opeth fan.

Deliverance - The "evil" twin of what should have been a two disc set with Damnation. This is where the heavy is. This album contains what I think is one of most metal listeners favorite Opeth song: Master's Apprentices.

Blackwater Park - Strangely enough, I am listening to this as I write. At work on a computer, listening through a pair of $25 Altec Lansing 2.1 computer speakers. Again, awesome listen. I think The Drapery Falls is one of the best tracks on this one. Bleak is good as well. Meh, they are all good!

I don't think there is a bad Opeth song. Although, they did do a cover of Celtic Frost's Circle of the Tyrants that I don't particularly care for. . I am still ruined by the version by Obituary. If you are a fan of heavy music, blended with harmony and the best musicians in the industry, look no further than Opeth. I hope this helps.

Awesome, I had preordered this from the European site back in February or March. I have it, but haven't watched it yet. Haven't had much time with my new baby boy. I can't wait to get my Aperion system!

Re: Any metalheads here want to talk? - Soulfly!

    Soulfy - Omen,

Started by Max Cavalera of Sepultura fame. This new album is great, and recently certified gold! Track 2, Rise of the Fallen is one of my favorite new songs. Soulfly got Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan for guest vocals. I like DEP, but this by far is the best Greg has ever sounded.

The rest of the album has a real metal feel. The first track, Bloodbath and Beyond, has no intro. The beating starts with the first note, dive right in! And Soulfly VII has you slam on the breaks. From the distortion filled hardcore of the album, you get sunk into a clean, psychadelic guitarfest. The axe work really shines.

Cannot thank you enough for introducing Opeth. Still processing a 3 day road trip to see them in Spokane and Seattle, WA; plus my hometown of Portland,  OR. on October 14,15,16 2011.

The new album Heritage may be argued by longtime fans due to a 'mellowness'?. As for my opinion, I feel much more artistic ability and musical craftsmanship (instrument, lyric, and recording qualities, etc.) shine thru on this album. I Highly recommend. Sound is great on my Aperions.

    Thanks Again,

    Opeth Fan
