Calibrating and configuring my Aperion with Onkyo 805

I would really appreciate if I can I have any help with this:

As said on other posts, after much investigating I went with Aperion (532 Intimus with the VAC and Sub-8) with an Onyo 805.

I am a total newbie, I like music and watching movies and have always wanted to have a Top of the line HT.... which I now have! ;)

I have several questions so that I get to understand how this thing works:

    1. The Onkyo reciever is connected to my SAT reciever and works well, speakers are connected also and the sub is connected with the Y adapter.

When I change between the different sound options on my Onkyo sometimes the sub and surrounds does not sound... but if I set it to Stereo in all Channel they do work? If I change to THX, NEO or any different sound setting sound seems not to be as good as it should, and I have to leave really low the power of the sub so that the hummmm fades...

I already did the autocalibration with the Onkyo, thing is that the room is small, and speakers are not far from each other...

    2. My DVD is connected through component video cable, and I see the video in my TV but when connected with the Digital Coax I hear no sound, then I had to connect standard RCA cables to  my reciever.... what is the point!?

I would really appreciate in any help given.

Good morning Juan, because English is the official language of the forum I'm not posting in spanish. I think I can help you, please call me at any time today to my cell phone here in Cali, Colombia 315-5755924 or to my home phone 2-8936108.

What a coincidence, today I'm setting up my Home Theater myself. Mine is a 7.2 system.

     Gracias y Saludos... :)

Re: Calibrating and configuring my Aperion with Onkyo 805

    Juan,

I have the 805 and really like it’s sound, flexibility and power.

Check your 805’s OSD setup. Audyssey may have set your fronts to Full Band like it did for me. “Full Band” fronts will probably detract from the LFE output to the Sub. Try the Speaker Config first and then check the rest.

    Menu --- Speaker Setup --- Speaker Configuration --- ( Sub = Yes )

                                                                                          --- ( Front = 70 HZ )

                                            --- Level Calibration           --- ( Sub = 0db )

                                            --- Equalizer Settings          --- ( Manual )

                                                                                          --- ( Channel ) ---- (Sub = 0db for all)

    Menu --- Audio Adjust   --- LFE Level                     --- ( 0db for all )

With all the different sound fields the 805 has there will be a difference in sound distribution between the various speakers depending on the sound field you choose.

My speaker Levels for all channels are set within + or – 2db.

How many mic positions did you use in the Auto Speaker Setup. I only use the minimum of 3 since I did not like the results when using 8.

    Hope this helps,

Re: Calibrating and configuring my Aperion with Onkyo 805

Jack,Thanks for your answer, I have been doing some manual calibration, results have been outstanding, nevertheless still have a question:

The "boxes" that show how many and which speakers are connected (5.1 set, total of 6 boxes) are on, but some how just the front speakers have the letters in it (LF, RF) the others, the reciever is just showing the box itself without the letters that correspond for each, any advise on what is happening?

    thanks

Re: Calibrating and configuring my Aperion with Onkyo 805

    Juan,

My 805’s OSD display shows the 8 speakers I have connected with no letter designation for the speakers within the boxes as shown in the (2-2 Speaker Config) submenu.

I don’t think that is a problem as long your connected speakers are displayed. Your display may be a bit different than mine since I have had my 805 since July of 2007. You may have a newer firmware revision / BIOS in computer terms.

Try this. Go to submenu 2-4 (Level Calibration) and cycle through the speakers shown on screen where a continuous test signal is output to the selected speaker/speakers when selected. If the sound is not relatively equal in amplitude, then further experimentation may be necessary checking the other submenus I previously mentioned.

As a last resort you can reset the 805 to original factory defaults as described on page 113 of the manual. You will loose your tuner presets if you do this however. If you do the reset of the 805, I would recommend that you use the Audyssey setup with only 3 mic locations placed close to the main listening position separated by at the most 3 feet left or right of the center listening position.
