10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
hi got my 10d sub last night, plugged it in, hit the remote power button so it said "on", then hooked up the rca cable to the single LFE rca input (jack on the back of the sub) and to my yamaharxv1700 receiver's subwoofer rca output. i couldn't get any sound at all from the sub... i fiddled a lot with it, and finally when changing the cable i heard something. I thought it was working, I was happy. Starwars podrace was thumping and booming... then i thought I'd like to try out the "auto" mode on the sub, so hit the power button on the remote again cycling the sub to mute to auto, and AGAIN, i couldn't get any sound out of it... even after cycling back to "on" on the sub, still nothing.
i thought this was strange, and thought maybe the sub was autodetecting what input to use or something... something getting screwed up when i hit the power button on the remote... so i cycled the power to the sub by unplugging it, and plugging back in (when in doubt reboot)... and the sub started working again... note: that during all this, the sub was at max output level in the receiver, that was the first thing I adjusted, which didn't fix anything. ok... so with the reboot, my problem is "fixed", I'm now listening to dreamy juicy sub bass, and if it happens again, i have a potential workaround to fix it... but... can anyone explain. what happened there? does cycling between mute/on/auto using the remote do something to the inputs that I'm not aware of? (i read the manual looking for what this strange "feature" was, but it doesn't seem to be mentioned there).
further, I was surprised NOT to see this issue listed in the troubleshooting for the sub... so, the aperion folk might want to add it, if indeed i don't just have a faulty unit...

Hooking up the rca plug while the sub was on might have caused this. I don't have the manual in front of me so I don't rememberm exactly what it said about hooking it up but I think I hooked it up while the AVR was on and turned all the way down and the Sub was off. Like I said I don't remember the exact steps. On my setup I have the fronts and the 8D set to 0 db. I have never had any problems with the sub being on when it should but I do have an older Onkyo AVR so there are a lot of differences there. Cheers

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
thanks russ. things seem to be working now... Here's an idea for the aperion people... for future models of subs: The sub's auto mode could be made more reliable if there was a trigger input on the sub. This trigger input would connect to the receiver's switched power output. (you'd still want power from a wall outlet to the sub, since the receiver doesn't supply 300w). When the receiver is on, the sub's trigger input would be powered, which would trigger the sub to be "on"... Simple, and then no hokey auto on/off stuff during movies...
Other idea I had was an adjustable sleep timeout in the sub... if no signal detected for more than X number of minutes (setable up to 2 hrs), then power off... This is probably cheaper to implement, since it can be done in software. :)

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
subatomic, are you still having the problem? My 10D is doing the same thing! I can't get bass even when set to ON, let alone AUTO. I need to unplug the sub, wait a minute or so, then plug it back in while the receiver is powered on. Then the sub works! This problem happens to me every time I power down the receiver for the night. I come back the next day, and the problem is there again. even if the sub doesn't get powered off! strange!! I'm going to talk to a guru tomorrow to try and get some resolution.

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
sorry, I'm only seeing your post now, I don't seem to receive email notification from this forum, ever... even when i'm subscribed
to answer your question: well, if I touch the remote control's on/off button, at all. then YES. I always get this problem, and I have to cycle power (reboot the sub!)
but I don't have the problem, because I avoid it! I leave the sub on "auto" all the time. (basically, I _never_ touch the remote control on/off/auto button and all is good. the sub defaults to auto on power on, and that's where I leave it)
sounds like a bug in the firmware... ? also.... I really don't like the auto-off. I wish I could specify the timeout in seconds (I'd set it to 2 hours)... the reason I don't like it is that an explosion tries to hit the sub, and it fails the 1st time, I notice this. it's uncomfortable hearing the weak 'hit'... :-( I'd put up with it if it was only the first hit of the movie... but the real solution to the sub (that aperion would need to implement) is a trigger input connected from the receiver's switched power outlet... that way the sub'd be on anytime the receiver is on... the way it should be. (my sub is up at 10+ in the yamaha rxv1700 and -3 on the sub, using the rca output)...
PLEASE let me know what your guru tells you, and how to resolve this issue. thanks! (it's unnerving thinking that my sub may be defective).

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
hmmm... not exactly the same problem I'm having. for me, pushing buttons on the remote doesn't cause any problems. It's getting the sub to fire in the first place! I chatted with Jason today, and he felt strongly that it was an input sensitivity problem. I had read a post by Caleb that detailed the issues, and thought I had tried the setup exactly as he had recommended, so I thought that Jason might be wrong ;) So, tonight I tried increasing the output from the receiver setup to +7, the sub volume was at 0. Still had the problem. Well, tonight I went even more extreme. Put the receiver output to +8, the sub volume at -5, then adjusted master volume to get 70 dB. Then I adjusted the fronts, centers, and rears without changing the master volume. I ended up with most of them in the negative range (-2 or so). So far, that seems to have fixed the problem. I'll turn on some music in the morning to see if the problem pops up again. Jason might have been right after all. Go figure!
I would recommend that you use the Live Chat feature and talk to a guru directly (not sure if you've already tried that). I'm sure they'd walk through your problem and help troubleshoot.

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
I avoid the problem as well. I too have experienced the sub going to sleep, only to get a weak first time hit, or even missing the hit all together. That is a drawback on a voltage (maybe not correct term, but roll with it) sensing system. There will always be a lag if your sub is "sleeping". Mind you, it could be microseconds, but it is noticable at times. For me, it drove me nuts! I leave my sub in the "on" position, but only flip the main power toggle button to on when I am using my audio system. Works like a charm.

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
Heya folks, Thought I would weigh in here. Brownsm, you eventually got things to where I was trying to lead folks with my post. Turning up the output to the sub alone will do very little. That's a very small incremental voltage increase and doesn't do a whole a lot, in the grand scheme of things. By reducing the output to your mains, center and surrounds (they will usually be in the negative domain) you are reducing your receivers output at a given volume level. So if 60 was usually the loudest you could comfortably get things, 60 will end up being quite a bit quieter once you make your adjustments. So now, maybe you need to turn your receiver up to 70. This is a good thing as you'll be sending your sub a LOT more signal this way. Don't worry, you'll be nowhere NEAR your maximum volume potential.

Re: 10D sub, strange input problem, what happened?
and so far, so good! this seems to have fixed my problem. sub fires right up now, and don't need to unplug it first! Thanks to Jason for leading me through this. He has been very helpful, and followed up with a phone call, even though he saw my post saying it was fixed!
