    Replace YamRX-V657 with OnkTX-SR706, Worth $$$?

At 20% off is it worth replacng my Yamaha RX-V657 (90Wx7, YAPAO, no HDMI) with a Onkyo 706 (100Wx7, AUDYSSEY, 3HDMI in 1 out)?  Both of my TVs are 720P, not a heavy user of home theater or music but I do enjoy quality sound.  Is there enough benifit or will the quality be very minor?

I would consider the Onk-806 but I am affraid I will not be abe to fit it in my entertainment center, is stepping up to the 806 worth a little hassel?

After more thought I guess there is no sense in replacing my Yamaha with a SR706.  So now is it worth my time to buy the SR806 (130Wx7, full 10180P upconversion, ADESSEY, 5HDMI in 1 out) at 20% off?  My local CC has 2 in boxes at 20%.  I think I will wait a week to see f they go to 25% or 30%, if they still have a OnkyoTX-SR806 I will probably buy it

    Good morning,

You must be near one of the circuit citys that is going out of business. Keep in mind that you still pay sales tax, so that 20% isnt that much. Also noteing that CC is usually very over priced. Case in point CC is charging 899 for the 806. WELL WELL above the market average for online sales. The 806 can be had all day long for 650 with free shipping.

And yes it is very much worth the upgrade!

The 806 is a much better receiver than the 657 in my opinion, not only will you get HDMI and more power, but the 806 has higher quality components.  The weight of the unit is usually a good indicator as to its quality and the 806 is 45 lbs while the Yamaha comes in at 27.  Check out this review of the 657 that was done with our smallest speakers from our previous line and the reviewer noted that the Yammy was a bit underpowered:

I read that review before, and since I posted I realized you can find the 806 for $650 shipped to your door.  I am gong to try to sell my reciever to my neighbor for $200, then buy the TX-SR806, I guess my wife just found my x-mas gift.

Yes I was thinking of Circuit City, all the CCs in the Phoenix area are closing.  I bought a Garmin navigation from there at 20% off, came home and realized I could still find it cheaper online.

    Thanks for the replies.

I JUST REALIZED THAT MY Samsung DLP (720P) DOES NOT HAVE HDMI INPUT ... Is it still worth my time?  I was planing on buying a Blu-Ray or PS3 along with this.  The upscaling is only through HDMI, is this correct?

You probably have a DVI input on your TV no?

You can use the HDMI output with an HDMI to DVI cable and I believe you'll still get the upscaled image.

Nevermind, I do have HDMI input, but my TV is only 720P, wonder what happens if you pput in 1080P?  Is there a way to select resolution that is output from the 806?

You can set the output resolution to 720p on the Onkyo, or you can set your Blu Ray player to output 720p and select "source" for the output of the Onkyo and it will just pass the signal.

    Re: Replace YamRX-V657 with OnkTX-SR806, Worth $$$?

    To add to the confusion...

I have a 720 Panny Plasma that has a 1080i signal coming into it - it handles it just fine (it's going through a *gasp* Sony receiver first but it doesn't upscale or try to downscale).

I don't know about your receiver, but I also have a Yamaha RX-V1800 (different room, different TV).  It will upscale to 1080 as long as the signal isn't coming in on HDMI. If it is, it just passes it through to the TV via HDMI.  This sounds OK but if you have a 1080 TV and you're sending video through the Yamaha at 720 via HDMI it will pass the 720 through to the TV. If you don't use HDMI the Yamaha will upscale the 720 to 1080.  Then again, your 1080 HDTV may upscale the signal.

    OK, i need some aspirin.
