Re: They are here! Introducing Bravus Subwoofers

Well it's been over a week with me having the new speakers so I'll go ahead and post my thoughts now. You can check out what I thought of the 5Bs vs. the 532s in the  "New 5 series Line thread."

For a short background you should know I'm not what I'd consider an audiophile, more of an "average joe" that just likes good sound. My interests are about 50/50 with music vs. movies and TV. Also I'm using an Onkyo 705 receiver. I'll be comparing the 10D to the S10 I returned.

To start off I'd like to say the 10D sounds awesome. Great lows without sounding too "boomy" and I can feel the bass noticeably more than with the S10. That being said I don't think the sound quality is enough of an improvement to be worth the extra $300 it costs. The quality of the sound isn't a huge improvement over the S10 if at all and it still balks at high volumes with a lot of bass (I am talking very high volumes though). I decided to test it out with an HD rental of Matrix Revolutions via my Apple TV and for shits n giggles I punched it up to +14 for volume on the sub (the sub setting on the receiver is set at 0) and had the whole thing playing pretty loud. When the ships in the movie are pushing hard there's a whole lot of rumble going on and the 10D tended to get more than a bit distorted. Admittedly this is not at all a normal volume to listen to something like this and the S10 would distort just as much if not more but for $800 I was hoping for better quality.

One thing I definitely love about the new Bravus line is the size. These things are friggin' tiny! With the placement in my room the S10 stuck out quite a bit and always annoyed me a little but with the 10D not only does it look a lot smaller but because it's sealed I can place it closer to the wall without worrying much about sound quality. The curves are beautiful and having the two speakers on the side and the controls and cherry finish in front really looks amazing. The down side about the looks (at least in cherry) is that the wood grain mismatches really badly unlike all the other Aperion speakers I've had. With the way the light hits it in my room and where it sits it's pretty noticeable and bugs the designer in me. Here's a quick cell phone picture to show you what I mean.

I'm not sure if that's the norm or if I got a bum finish. I'm going to live with it for at least a couple more weeks but I'm not sure yet if the pros (small size, mostly good looks and great sound at normal volumes) outweigh the cons (balks at very high volumes and wood grain mismatching) yet so am unsure if I'll keep it or return it and get a bigger/uglier, but better sounding sub from somewhere else. I briefly considered the 12D but can't justify spending that much on a sub right now. If Aperion's upgrade policy applied to subs I would probably just keep the 10 and upgrade later to the 12.

If anyone has any questions or things they'd like me to test just let me know.

Thanks for the mini review! I'm in the market for a compact sub and the 10D is on my list.  I am interested in some response graphs that hopefully will be posted soon.  $800 is a tidy sum for a sub and about as much as I want to spend.   The Aperion 10D, Sunfire HRS-12, and SVS SB12 are all in this price range, sized similarly, and available in gloss black (a requirement for me).  What I select will primarily be based on performance with features being less important.

Re: They are here! Introducing Bravus Subwoofers

Hey everybody. Question for ya. I'm looking to replace my Energy sub with something smaller, and better. Most people on the AVS forum are telling me to buy the SVS SB12 plus. I've heard it's really good considering the small size. But, I really want to support Aperion, being from my home town and all. Anybody  know how  the Bravus 10D would compare to the  compact SVS sub?

Can anyone help me with the some advice concerning the intimus 12 sub vs the bravius d10. space isnt to much of anissue but as far as sound, and such which should perform better. im in about a 2500 cf room that opens up to the dining room. mostly will be used for ht and some music but movies and such for most of the time. any feedback is apreciated. Thanks

Re: They are here! Introducing Bravus Subwoofers

I'm no expert but I'm guessing the S-12 is going to smoke the 10D for sound quality, especially in the really deep bass. Just looking at the specs the S-12 gets down to 20 Hz where the 10D is only getting down to 30 Hz at -3 dB and 26 Hz at -6. Also the 12D has a higher powered amp in it.

The only real bonuses you would get with the 10D is a smaller form factor and remote interface. I like the looks and form factor of the new Bravus subs a lot and the remote interface is a nice bonus so it really depends on what you're looking for. Smaller form factor, remote features, and easier placement or bigger box and better sound.

Some cool discussion and pics regarding the Bravus 12D subs that I found while googling...

"My buddy and care giver Kerry says that he prefers the Aperion Bravus over the Hsu hands down for music. He's here six nights a week working, and remembers when I bought the Hsu. We listen to a lot of music, and have tried out the Bravus 12D with rock, country, pop, and some explosions from the Blu ray movie "Marine".

The Bravus 12D has captured me by surprise. I thought that going from the Hsu VTF-3 HO Turbo and MBM-12 to the smaller Aperion was down grading, but quite the opposite is true. The Bravus 12D is very musical sub, powerful and has enough guts for me"

Can't wait for those pro reviews to come out....But this person seems to think it stands up well against some tough competition.

Very cool indeed. I too am delighted with my 12D. I watched Batman Begins over the weekend and was in awe! A great movie to test your HT gear. I was IN the movie! Total immersion.
