    File Sharing PS3

    Greetings,

I have my PS3 hooked up to my home network but I'm wondering if I can play music files located on my home PC from my PS3. Can't seem to find anything on it in the manual.  I can get on the internet with my PS3 but can't seem to see any file sharing options.  I've got a bunch of .wav files on my home PC that I want to tap into from my ps3 and play over my system.  Anyone know?

     Thanks,

    DAn.

Here is a link for you. Note, I have not done this, so I cannot speak from experience. All of my media is in the same room, so I have no need.

    Thanks Scottieman,

Worked.  Only thing I'm trying to figure is why my WMA audio files from my PC are being played as MP3 on my playstation 3 .  Orb sends them via .asx to my PS3 and that may be what the PS3 decodes .asx as?  In any event, I  can access all my music from my PC on my PS3...Just a note, the response is a bit slow when changing tracks, pausing, stopping etc.. Jammin..

    Re: File Sharing PS3

If you've got Windows Media Player 11 you can just use DLNA and your PS3 will see your networked computer and all the shared music, pictures and videos.

Here's the scoop from the PS3 site.

    http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/connectdlna.html

Works great for me.  This way you wan't have any software in the way transcoding your files.  They'll simply be streamed to your PS3 and played from there.  Now if you've got file formats that the PS3 doesn't support then you'll new something like Orb or TVersity or Play On to change the file format on the fly and then stream the result to the PS3.  This of course will slow things down a bit so if you can get away with going straight to the PS3 then you should get better performance.

Also, you could upgrade your network to gigabit.  That would help performance too.  :)

    Re: File Sharing PS3

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately I cannot play back any of my ripped cd's or Ipod music.  PS3 says format not supported.  So anything copyright protected doesn't play. Darn. Looks like if I want CD quality sound I have to actually put a CD in, I can't stream .wma's from my network.

    Re: File Sharing PS3

If you ripped the CDs using WMP they shouldn't be DRMed WMA files but you may have to enable WMA playbak in your PS3.

    http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/music/filetypes.html

Check out the link for the setting to enable WMA playback.  Another option would be to re-rip them into another more portable format.  It would suck but at least you know you're safe down the road.

As for your IPod tunes you'r right but I don't think Orb or any of the other transcoders would help you there either.  From now on I'd suggest only buying non-DRMed music from iTunes or better yet Amazon.

    Re: File Sharing PS3

I'm finding that many people are having problems streaming lossless WMA via media player 11 to their PS3's.

    Re: File Sharing PS3

You're right  I should have done some research.  The PS3 doesn't support lossless WMA.  Actually, doesn't look like it supports any lossless format.  I don't listen to lossless much and if I do it's through my PC and not my PS3.

Looks like people have been complaining about this for a while.  Seems odd Sony hasn't fixed this.  Should have stuck some devs on this instead of Home.  :)

sorry busy holiday weekend, and i only have a second to type....

but i wanted to remind everybody that there ps3 is an open platform. You can load linux or even xp on it, from there you can stream whatever you like including your loseless audio. Dont forget you can allways dual boot the ps3 os and another operating system!

    Re: File Sharing PS3

Not true, I can stream WAV Lossless files (ripped from WMP 11) from my LaCie Ethernet Disk mini - Home Edition Network Attached Server to my PS3 without any issues.  I believe this is the only lossless format the PS3 will play and it shows up as PCM file on the PS3 when streaming.  Althought i will admit that doing a A/B comparison with a 320 Kbps MP3 file sounds pretty close to the WAV lossless, this is considering i have Martin Logan Source speakers, Integra DTR 7.8 receiver and B&K 200.2 reference amp setup.  If space is not a issue, with NAS and HDD prices pretty cheap 1 TB could be had for under $200, it may be well worth it for any music collection.
