    Oppo BDP-83 or Samsung BD-P3600

Hopefully some of you can offer some insight.  After being burned from the demise of HD-DVD (XBOX 360 add-on), I'm finally in the market for a Blu-Ray player.  I've narrowed down my choices to the 2 mentioned in the subject line, but still have reservations.  I'm kind of interested in an audio format that's better than cd, and the Oppo plays SACD's, while the Samsung does not.  Should I take the plunge into SACD territory?  Should I just get the Samsung and clear some room for a record player & some LP's?

    Which should I do?

    • Buy Oppo BDP-83 and load up on SACD's (66.7%)
    • Buy Samsung BD-P3600 and buy LP's (33.3%)
You voted for 'Buy Oppo BDP-83 and load up on SACD's'.

I've been looking at BD players and I was on the list at Oppo. It'll start shipping in a week or so to people who signed up early and ordered one. But, for $499? I'm sure it's a great player and at that price it better be.

I'd prefer one that will let me hook up to my home wireless network and stream video to the television like Roku.  Netflix has a few recommendations that will do that but, like the Oppo, they're also a bit pricey.

Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

If you can't have fun doing it, it's probably not worth doing.

Being more of a music nut than movie buff, my personal vote would go to the Samsung so you can get more licorice pizzas Wink. Both units do seem on the surface to be pretty darn good however, so I'm sure you can't go wrong with either one; hopefully I can get some hands on with both of them sometime soon.

Unlike, Oliver, I am in the other camp - I am awaiting the general release of the Oppo.  It would replace my old standby Sony DVP-NS999ES DVD player (which has served me very well) and still be able to play my SACDs.

BTW, Stealth, if you have any Warner Bros. HD-DVDs (I, like you, have the HD-DVD addon for my 360 and have a few HD-DVDs), you might be interested in this site to "upgrade" them to Blu-ray: http://www.red2blu.com/

For now, I'm taking Netflix streaming out of the equation, because I already have an XBOX 360, but the Samsung comes with a wifi adapter, which might be my only reasonable way to connect to the internet, considering I haven't seen any wireless options for the Oppo, unless they snuck some 802.11 action in the final product.  I do have a spare port on my Directv HD-DVR, with the other hooked to a powerline adapter, but I still cant get that to work, so go figure.

I've been to the red to blu site, and sadly enough, I have 18 Warner Bros. flicks I could use a blu-ray copy of.  The wife wasn't understanding why I'd need 2 copies of the same movie, so I might have to sneak those in the house...

stealth, granted this thread is a month old, but if you are still debating your choice, I can tell you that my BDP-83 is on its way to me and should be here in the next day or two.  I hope to have it up and running this weekend if you want my two cents on it.

I would go with the Oppo.  I was on the list for the first shipment of them, but did not want to spend the money at that time.  Ethernet port is nice.  My Denon 2500 lacks that feature.  As far as netflix I too have a 360...it does a fine job.  Keep us updated
