    Onkyo 805 auto set up

Is that the best option with this unit?

Re: Onkyo 805 auto set up

The auto set up does a good job of dialing in your distances, but you if you use it I highly recommend that you take a look at the other settings it applies afterwards.  Particularly you will want to make sure it didn't set your crossovers too high, we recommend 80 Hz, although the towers can be run as full band and the 4Bs will only go down to 100 Hz.  Also I would go back into your channel levels and recalibrate with an SPL meter.  Finally you'll probably want to turn the Audyssey EQ off.

Re: Onkyo 805 auto set up

Jason hit the nail on the head. Distance accuracy is quite good but you really gotta check those crossovers afterwards. For some reason it set my dipole's to 150hz Tongue Tied. Sounded awful for awhile until I noticed what was wrong. Also the levels will most likely be off too way off.

It will do an "all in one" quick job. But the best option for this and any unit is an spl meter.

Herbie is correct.  We always recommend a manual calibration using an spl meter to get everything dialed in.  Your ears will thank you for it.

Re: Onkyo 805 auto set up

I was reading this yesterday and went back and adjusted my system.  I ran the audyssey program to get the distances then made sure the ohms were all set to 8.  Check the crossovers and set them all to 80hrz and the F and R are full band, this seemed to make a big difference but then I turned the audysessy EQ off and everything immediately sounds much more natural, the sound field was fuller and I was blown away.  What exactly does the audyssey EQ do???  You recommened I change anything up on my settings?

    System:

    Onkyo 705

    5T towers, 5C Center, 5B surrounds, S-10 Sub

    Thanks,

    Brad

    From the horse's mouth:

    http://www.audyssey.com/technology/index.html

Your audio system was not designed for your room. It does not know your room's size, where the walls and furniture are and which materials are absorbing and reflecting sound. Audyssey MultEQ measures and removes the distortion caused by room acoustics, delivering the best possible sound for everyone in your listening room.

Until now, world class sound was limited to the best theaters. Now, with Audyssey MultEQ you can hear accurate, enveloping, and distortion-free sound everywhere in your listening room. MultEQ was developed over five years with $6 million of University-based research to discover how to build an advanced automatic system that can measure the acoustics of the room and correct audible sound distortion throughout the entire listening area, not just in one spot.

Full band for the 5Ts and 80 for everything else is what I recommend for that set up so I think you're good there.  If you have an SPL meter I'd recommend going back in and doing a manual calibration of the channel levels.  Then you should be all set.

Thanks.  That being said, why would you recommend turning the EQ off then?

Mostly due to these types of observations:

    celliobp:

I can only choose between 4 and 6 ohms....Is that right?

Yes that's correct, so for our speakers you'll want to choose the 6 ohm setting.
