5Ts + 8D in the small room vs. 6Ts (no sub)

5Ts + 8D in the small room vs. 6Ts (no sub)

    Hey there,

I recently purchased a speaker set from Aperion (5Ts, 5C, 4Bs + 8D), and after testing them for couple of weeks, I must say I'm still astonished by their ability to reproduce sound - they are superb product, indeed!  After reading few posts on this forum, my appetite for delicacies grew even more, and I started considering the upgrade to 6T.  So here's my dilemma, and few questions arising from it:  I mostly appreciate the speakers when listening to music (aprox. 70% music / 30%  movies), so I'd definitively be willing to move up to 6Ts, but there are two things that stir my mind - limited space in the room, and (of course), the budget.  My room is about 11x16, and you can see here

that it is tight by the shorter wall where the equipment is located, and I would say that 5Ts fit rather nicely.  Having much deeper 6Ts in there would necessitate positioning them even closer to the walls - would it adversely affect the acoustics?  And because of the budget, when upgrading, I would have to give up on the sub - how's the sound of 5T + 8D in smaller rooms compared to 6Ts with no sub?  Furthermore, how different the sound would be when comparing 6Ts alone against 6Ts + 8D?

I hope some of you will help with your knowledge and share some suggestions - all will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

As great as the 6T's are, I'd keep it the way it is if I were you.  Reasons:

-I'm always a big fan of a dedicated sub for music.

-You're already in an acoustic nightmare with your speaker placement, particularly your sub.

-The size of the 6T's are no joke.  They're HUGE speakers.  In a small room, it would be messy trying to get them to fit well.

Re: 5Ts + 8D in the small room vs. 6Ts (no sub)

Yeah honestly your 5Ts are already too close to the walls, so I think if you did go up to the 6Ts you would have to rethink your set up entirely.

Also, even though the 8D and the 6Ts have about the same frequency response, you can get a lot more low frequency output out of the 8D since you can boost the gain so much with its volume control.

So if it were me I'd probably just stick with your current set up.

Is only the wall on the back side of the speaker that has the adverse acoustic effect, or the side walls have an impact, as well?  When having speakers close to the side walls, would turning them inward a few degrees help?

I will push the shelving unit closer to the fireplace, put the spikes on the towers and try to reposition everything away from the walls...

Thanks! - I appreciate your feedback.

As for the spikes, besides support and protection, are they being recommended for any other reason?

The sub is performing very well, and I'm under impression that lower frequencies are spreading through the room evenly, without overshadowing effect.  I will make some space to pull the sub out of the corner few inches - trying all possible set-ups is the only way to figure out the most efficient one...

     Thanks for your input!

Yes side walls cause problems as well.  I try to keep mine a couple of feet from the back wall and even more from the sides.  Dop you have any options to rearrange the room?  I know the wall mounted TV make that difficult.

Oh, by the way, I like the feather.  Very unique.

Yeah, at least two feet from the side walls would be ideal maybe you can bring the left tower forward so it's on the same axis as the right tower and then in a little bit so it is in front of the left leg of the stand.  If you don't use that fireplace I'd put the right tower right at the outer edge of it and at least a foot in front of it to get a little clearance from the walls.

The floor spikes decouple the sub from the floor and should give it a tighter/cleaner sound.  Same thing with the spikes for the towers.
