What reciever whould you buy for $750

I'm looking to update my HT and am debating between the Aperion 522's with the VAC and 10" sub vs the Axiom Grand Master - leaning towards the Aperion. My question is what would be the best reciver for these speakers - this system will be used 100% for HT as I have a seperate home audio system. I currently have a B&K AVR 202 that I'm selling on ebay if I get my price if not then I will be using that. I'm leaning towards the Yamaha RX-V2500 but haven't seen many reviews on this site for that setup. Also, has anyone purchased there reciever via Ebay? Thanks for your help

Hi John. A lot of customers are raving about the Denon 3805. Also of note is the Onkyo SR702, and Harman AVR635. The Yamaha 2500 is a great home theater receiver as well. It's on the brighter sounding side of things, which can be good depending on what you're looking for.

I've sold a number of receivers (open box, dinged merchandise, etc) at ebay. I'm currently selling some there now actually. I think it's a great place to buy.

Ben - Thanks for the response - I have heard a lot of good things about you on the internet. I like the Denon 3805 but unless my B&K brings me more $ the 3805 may just be out my range. What do you think of the Denon 2805 vs HK 635 vs Onkyo 702 for the setup that I mention above. I asume that recievers sold through Aperion carry the full manufacturing warranty. Thanks agan

Yes, anything we sell has the full manuf. warranty. The 2805 is a great choice. It provides 90% of the features and sound on the 3805. If you're looking for a more musical, natural, sound, I would go with the Denon or the Harman Kardon. I personally really like the looks on the HK stuff. The Onkyo's are going to be a bit on the brighter side, and have heavier bass as well.

    Cheers,

    John,

While the AVR202 is not exactly the state-of-the-art in terms of features, bells, whistles, etc., I guarantee that it has more guts and musicality than any of the mass-market machines you're looking into.  If you seek the modern niceties of todays receivers, I know B&K will upgrade their older units to currents specs for a reasonable price.  Seriously, look at the weight of that thing - 55 lbs.  Try finding any receiver with that kind of heft and horspower for under $2000 today.  And it's American-made.  Keep the 202 and spend more cash on speakers!

The B&K is great for music - however we hardly listen to music in the HT room - it is in our finished basement and we go down there only to watch movies - our house has built in speakers for the upstairs rooms.. I use to have a Yamaha VX series but got hit by lightening and I replaced it with the B&K and have always missed my Yamaha reciever when it came to movies. Also, need something a little less complicated for the wife to use. Thanks for the input.

Hey Ben & Josh - First of all thanks for all your help - I will be placing my order either tomorrow or Monday. I'm now just trying to decide between the HK 635 or a refurbished Denon AVR-3805 from Dakmart (Authorized Denon Dealer - 1 Yr Wrty) Of the two which will drive the speakers best for movies? I will be getting the 522's for the fronts the 10" sub for sure. I'm still debating between the 522 C vs VAC and the 522 vs SS for surround - can't wait to get the new system. Thanks again

RE: What reciever whould you buy for $750

The HK 7000, 8000, and the 7200's can be had at this price point, and IMO they blow every reciever away under 2k.

The Denons are rated at 6ohms at their prospective power points, and utilize lesser components than the HK and the upper line Onkyos. The upper line B&K recievers can also be had near your price point but you'll have to shop around.

Have a look at the specs for each reciever, you may notice the HK's ampreage is very high by way of comparrison to the others (except the B&K's), this is far more important than Watts Per Channel. This is also why many people prefer seperate amp(s)/decoder set ups.

Maybe you need more efficient speakers?

BTW- if you desire to sell your B&K drop me a line I might be interested.
