Hello everyone,

I should start by saying that I’m an absolute novice in the world of audio, possibly even a dunce. I’ve owned and enjoyed my 5.1 system for roughly two years now, it’s a sorted collection of hand me down equipment. I’ve always known however that things could drastically improve but intentionally settled on the mantra " ignorance is bliss". That was all fine and well until the day I actually heard a competent system at work at a local electronics center. Of all the stupid movies to demo they had in that atrocious Garfield movie but even during the most mundane of scenes I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. There were details and an indescribable sensation of warmth and depth that I’ve never heard before in a stereo system. I didn’t bother to find out what the equipment was because I prefer to do my homework and come to my own conclusions. I’m of the mind I can reproduce that kind of sound by hand picking the pieces and saving a few bucks in the process. It was at a Circuit City after all so it isn’t like the equipment was the most exclusive of electronics. While on the topic of money it should be noted that I haven’t the cash flow to pony up for the entire system at once and plan to buy my system piece by piece. I’ve already made up my mind to go with Aperion, provided they impress me here at the house. I’ll be trying out a pair of 533t towers and a 533 vac. I’ll add the rear channels and sub sometime later as I already have several of each that can fill in for the time being. My receiver (Pioneer VSX D814) too is getting replaced and therein lies the rub, is my current receiver going to do the Aperion’s any justice?

Michael, your existing Pioneer will drive Aperion speakers. The great thing about Aperion's crossover technology is that it doesn't take a lot of juice to get them going - that isn't to say more (or higher quality) juice won't make them 'sing', but you will be fine with your Pioneer to start. Plus, the Aperions will let you hear a whole new world as you upgrade electronics in the future as well. You have a good plan - buy the best you can afford right now and add more as funds allow!

Does anyone have suggestions regarding speaker wire such as gauge and manufacturer?

Hi Michael,

Wire gauge will usually depend on the length you want to run.  Most folks get away with 14awg.   I prefer 12 as it looks tougher. 

I don't think manufacturer is really that big of a deal unless you have very strict listening standards.  I'm using a mix of Monster and Accoustic Research and am pleased with the results.

Michael, I've used Monster Cable's MCX series cables with my Aperions with good results.  If you want to spend a little more, Audioquest & Kimber offer good values.

I have heard cables make a difference, but it is much more noticible on higher end gear (ie. $2500+ per component range).  I wouldn't fret it at this point, just get something decent and enjoy!!!
