    hk dpr 1005 and 2005

Looking for a receiver to go along with the Aperions I am about to purchase.

I see these are being sold thru Amazon (thru their merchant J&R Music) for $749 and $899 respectively.  This seems crazy cheap.

This seems like too good a deal to pass up, particularly because I need a receiver with less than 5" of height to fit into a built in unit.

Anyone dealt with the J&R?  They are guaranteed by Amazon, you can file a claim with Amazon if something is wrong, so that makes me feel better.

Lewis, talk to me about this receiver.

    Thanks!

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

I've dealt with J&R a couple of times before.  They are a highly reputable dealer with some incredible pricing quite often.  The most important thing I've found when purchasing an HK receiver is to be sure that the place you are buying it from is an authorized HK dealer.  Often times you will find receivers really cheap through various on-line retailers.  However, if the equipment is faulty and you try to go through HK for warranty repair they won't honor your proof of purchase if bought from an unauthorized dealer.  As you can see by accessing the following link, J&R is an authorized on-line distributor of HK products.  Therefore, you should have no worries purchasing from J&R.  Even if something went wrong with the receiver outside the return period for J&R, you could have HK replace/repair the unit for the cost of shipping.  It typically takes around 7-10 business days for the repair center to turn around a repair request.

While I have not auditioned the 1005, I currently own the 2005 and let me tell you .............. the sound it produces through my Aperion's is something to behold.  I had previously owned an AVR630 which I sold because of an incredible deal I got on a 2005.   I was hesitant at first because I couldn't imagine a receiver sounding better than the AVR630.  My upgraditis got the best of me and I'm not regretting my purchase in any way.  You will hear arguments made both for and against HK products.  My experience has been positive with HK products.  As a matter of fact I just purchased some HK computer speakers a few weeks ago.

While I may not be the most technical guy to discuss the specifics of this receiver with, I can refer you to a couple of places where the DPR 1005 and 2005 are discussed at length.  The site is www.avsforum.com . You will see a link called "Amps, Receivers, and Processors".  You should then type in DPR2005 in the search window in the upper right hand corner (make sure it is the one that says "search this forum:Current").  This will give you a great deal of threads concerning both the 2005 and 1005.  I hope this helps

Thanks Lewis.  I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 2005 yesterday after reading a bunch of the posts at the AVS forum.  So new the receiver and the speakers are on their way and my xmas bonus is gone but I'm sure I'm soon to be happy.  I'll let you know how it all goes.

I too have HK computer speakers, and I am constanty amazed and how good those little things sound.

Ok, I got it all, and am now engaged in the daunting task (to a newbie) of setting it all up.

So from what I've read it seems that I should connect the DVD video connections directly to the receiver and then the receiver to the TV to avoid lip synch delay issues.  Right now I've got a crappy 10 year old Sony TV and the best input that is has is S-video.  So, can I connect the DVD to the receiver with a component video connection and then the DVD to receiver with an S video connection?  I can't find a firm answer to this in manual.  I've tried to do it this way and I get no picture on the TV.

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

Does the HR DPR2005 run "hot"? I've read many reviews about the AVRs running "hot", even though they have a fan. Also, is the fan noise too loud on the 2005?

    Thanks.

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

Another question is whether the DPR1005 or 2005 (only difference are the power, 70w/ch vs 120w/ch) support 6.1 settups? Seems from specs that they only support 5.1 or 7.1. Perhaps Lewis can comment since he owns owe? Thanks.

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

You're right about the power difference aj aj.  The only other difference is that the 2005 has switchable front panel Coaxial In/Out.  I think the heat produced by the DPR2005 is minimal at best.  My AVR630 put off a great deal of heat so maybe my comparisons are biased.  As a matter of fact my receiver has been on for four hours now playing DVD-A discs at a fairly moderate volume.  It's not cool by any means, but you don't feel swirls of heat coming out the top of the unit.  Personally, I've never heard the fan in the DPR2005.  It's an awesome receiver! I'm loving it with the PT's alongside the rest of my Aperion setup

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

Thanks Lewis. I've been considering the DPR2005. My last HT had an analog receiver and I like the idea of the smaller footprint. DPRs seem to have a higher THD than analogs but I guess I won't be able to tell the difference (but it's food for debate with ultra-audiophiles Frankly I was surprised at how low the output power is on many of the AVRs from HK (i.e. 50w/ch) - though ofcourse wattage doesn't signify sound quality - on such high quality receivers. Have you noticed any delays due to all the dsp processing, when for example, you switch tv channels or music from a digital source (is there a delay between the picture arriving and the sound when flipping?)? Best regard, aj

Lewis I forgot to add: where did you get the good deal on your DPR2005, if I may ask? Lowest price I found was from onecall for about $959 or so. Cheers, aj

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

Actually the way I got the deal on my DPR2005 is quite interesting.  I went searching on E-bay for deals on the units.  I found a company (stereoadvantage.com) that had an open box receiver for sale on E-bay.  Mind you, I had no idea that they were an authorized Harman Kardon on-line distributor.  Thank God they were because the unit shipped and arrived D.O.A.  Stereo Advantage was unable to replace the unit in that they were out of stock.  I had gotten such a good deal on the unit (around $700) that I decided to try and get it repaired.  I called HK and was told that they didn't have replacement parts in yet for the DPR2005 and would have to ship me a new one.  After a few weeks I received a brand spanking new unit.  Had the company I originally bought it from not have been HK certified, I would have been out of luck and would probably repurchased an AVR630.

As far as the skipping of audio from channel to channel ..... this was a big issue for me with the AVR630.  Apparently the computer receiver upgrade (from the site) that was released a few months ago corrected this and other glitches with the units (430 & 630).  I haven't heard any negative news on the "35" series, but would assume that these issues were taken care of.  I couldn't imagine having another brand of receiver unless it was this one ... then again who has $4000 to spend on a receiver

Wow that is a great deal, amazing! So you've noticed none of those annoying delays that you experienced with the AVR630 with the DPR2005? That's good to hear. I'm close to making a decision... Cheers, AJ

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

My deal is even better!  I bought a 7200 ($600), and I fried the amps after a couple months with a serious brain-fade.  HK offered to replace it with a 635 or their flagship 7300, since the 7200 was out of production.  No joke!

Hey Lewis, Would you describe your HK DPR2005 to be "warm" sounding? Cheers.

RE: hk dpr 1005 and 2005

    Hey Lewis!

I got my DPR2005 just last weekend but I haven't hooked it up to anything yet as I still need to buy speakers . I'm wondering how you like your DPR and how it sounds with your Aperions. Does it make the Aperions sound more laid back, smooth and warm (less bright and edgy?)? I'm hoping sonically they're a good match. Cheers.
