    Dipole Speaker positioning?

I have a question on Dipole speakers.  In a 7.1 HT I am unclear as to where I would place the Dipoles.  Would they be the LR surrounds, or the two rear channels?

    RE: Dipole Speaker positioning?

I'm a newbie myself but I just set up a 7.1 system this week with the Dipole/Bipoles as the rear surrounds because they are on the same channel and the sound doesn't need to be directional.

The other four are 522D-LRs, with a VAC center and the 10" sub.

I would have used 522D-LRs for the rear surrounds as well, but the Right is near the door and I would have hit my head on the speaker.  The Dipoles take up less room when flush mounted.

    RE: Dipole Speaker positioning?

    Hi Scott,

In a 7.1 setup you can use the dipoles in either location but if you want to get the most out of them the best location would be to use them as left & right surround speakers positioned to the side of the listening position about 6' off the floor. This placement will give you the option of switching between dipole and bipole mode. Generally, it is recommended that they should be set to the bipole position if they are more than 15 degrees behind the listening position so if you do use them as back surrounds, you will probably want to use them in bipole mode.

Remember, these are best case scenario recommendations. In the end, do what you like and what sounds best to you. If you like them in the back set to dipole mode then go with that.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

    Cheers,

    John Wanderscheid

    Thanks for the Input Gentlemen.

John, do you see any benifits to using Dipoles as both the L/R Surrounds and the rear center channels?

    RE: Dipole Speaker positioning?

That can make sense if the surrounds (back and sides) are going to be positioned close the listening position, say less than 5 ft away. (Because the di/bi speakers throw a wide soundstage within a very short distance). Or if you're simply looking for the most spacious, ambient surround effect, the di/bi is the way to go.
