Man I just got this reciever and wow I can't believe the sound.  I can't attest to it being better or worse than other high end recievers but I had a Kenwood before that was THX certified with about the same power rating and I know Kenwood is not the best but I can't believe the difference.  It sounds awsome and I havent even really gotten it all the way tweaked yet.  I just set the speaker distance and matched the speaker levels.  My system finaly sounds like one of those high end rooms you go into at the specialty stereo shop.  I have to be honest when I first got my Aperion system I thought it sounded good but I couldn't tell a huge difference between my old speakers but this reciever really made them come alive.  I only messed with the Nettune a little bit and after turning off my firewall I got it to work for a few minutes and then it quit working again so I will have to mess with it some more.  Hopefully I can get it working reliably cause it is a really cool feature.

Keep us posted on the best settings. I got the same system as yours.  

I got the Nettune working fairly reliably and got my firewall rules set up as well but man the Nettune software sucks. It gets the job done but that is about it.  I hope they improve this software over time.  They are on 2.0 so far.  Also I ripped some CDs into WMA format at 64 kbps which Nettune is supposed to support and if I select them the reciever just sits there and then I can't even go back and pick something different.  Even if I turn off the reciever it just goes back to where it was.  I have to go into the Nettune software on the computer and remove those songs from the data base to get it to work again.  Also when building your data base you can select which formats you want it to look for and I excluded WMA the second time around and they still got included. I wish they would just make it a plug in for Windows media player or something.  That would be a lot better.  That way it could probably play the WMA with DRM.  I had started to buy some tracks online over the past few months but Nettunes puts an end to that because if I can't play them on my reciever it is not worth the money.  I am going to try burning some of the songs I bought onto CD and then re-rip them into MP3, which is the only way to lose the DRM, and see if I notice the quality loss.  I also bought the Onkyo DV-CP802 and bought some SACDs and it sounds like I am up onstage at a live performance. It is incredible.  My systems before were loud and clear but this extra fidelity with all my new equipment is awsome to me.

Kevin I'm glad to hear your enthusiasm for Aperion. It makes me feel better about my own purchase. So far I've been loving them too. Sorry to hear your problems with this nettune thingie.   But, since I am old school I've been listening to some of my old vinyl lately and WOW!  It really sounds wonderful. As far as SACD goes yes they do sound incredible as well.  I'm just waiting to get Mark Knopfler on DVD-A next though.

I got my system towards the end of Nov 2004. A cop came about 2 weeks later because the neighbors at the back complained. I used to play the onkyo at volume 80 to 85 so I tempered it down from  65 to 70. This morning, my two neighbors (at the back) came to our house and pleaded with me about the loudness again. They said sometimes they cannot even hear the music but the bass really bothers them. In fact, they say, they like the music I play but the bass is just too much. I had my settings originally at -4db so I tempered the sub down to -10db. I like the crossover settings at 80. Any ideas on how to solve this other than moving to a different house? I have a s12 sub.  How does the s8 sound?

When I used to throw parties I used invite the neighbors so they wouldn't complain.  Maybe you should invite them over for dinner and a movie.  They can bring the beer.

Hello everyone,

I just joint the forum and am kinda of a rookie when it come to HT systems. I am interested in purchasing the Onkyo TX-NR801 and a se of 422/S8 speaker. But I have a question: How does the Zone 2 work. The resoan I am asking is because I want to be able to hook up the receiver to my outdoor soeakers (2) and be able to play music outside during parties while someone else is enjoying a movie inside on my HT.
Is that what Zone 2 does?

Sure is!

If you want to run zone 2 you can only use 5.1 on zone 1 because the last two channels are used for zone 2.
