Harman Kardon 440, 640 and 740 AV Receivers

I have read an awful lot of good stuff about these receivers. But, I can't find them anywhere? Any idea whats going on with them? The specs on them sound great.

it's possible they haven't been released yet.

Electronics companies show the new stuff in January and then it trickles out into the market over the following 8 months or so.

You might want to try contacting HK directly, or call a local dealer.

And try not to get too caught up in the specs-great specs don't always equal great performance.

Thanks Nick. I'll try not to get too caught up into the specs. But, besides listening to the receiver (which is logistically impossible for many), how do you know otherwise that it could be something you want? BTW, you were right about the release. They been talking about these receivers since January, but they arent supposed to actually be released until this month,,,maybe. Then on top of that, they changed the model number on these receivers from 40 to 45 (640 is now 645). Basically the 445 replacing the 435, the 645 replacing the 635, etc etc.,,,,Take a look at the specs on these Nick and let me know what you think. Id luv to hear your honest opinion. Thanks!!

Unfortunately the best way to decide on a receiver is to listen to it which, as you stated, is sometimes not an option. That's one of the reasons I tend to stick with things that I can find locally )Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer Elite). For me this does include Aperion speakers since I live about 60 miles south of their headquarters. However, even if I lived on the other side of the country I'd still consider buying them since they have the nice return policy.

Of course, some of us live in places where no local dealers exist which means we have to narrow our choices down based on specs....

No to mention the fact that the dealer thats sells X receiver may not sell Y speakers, etc.

Anyway, based on the listed specs (of the 635 since I can't find the 645) it should be a good receiver. The power seems a little low, but if I recall correctly, HK rates their power output differently than most other companies. I think they rate it by actual full-range output which is probably more accurate.

I still recommend finding a dealer (if possible) that can demo each of these receivers for you. Even if you can't demo them with Aperion speakers you can at least get an idea of how each will perform.

Thanks Nick. I'll see if I can find someone who can offer a decent return policy in case the receiver sucks. Best,

your best bet would be Circuit City, assuming they have that receiver. I'm pretty sure their return policy is very open.

I was very happy with my HK receiver until I had a warranty issue and my brand new receiver went to HK because they have no service centers and in return I got a dinged refurbished receiver. I will keep you posted on how this progresses, please read my post. I will keep a positive at****ude and assume that they will keep their promise and rectify the situation. So far, I am very dissapointed with their warranty service. Keep this in mind.

RE: Harman Kardon 440, 640 and 740 AV Receivers

Thanks for the support, lol...these things can be really frustrating...it's really sad that "reputable" companies can still have such terrible product support in this day and age. This kind of situation is one of the huge drawbacks of shopping online (though OneCall where I bought my receiver has superb customer serivice, but after 30 days, they revert to the warranty which is with the manufacturer, not them)...one of the few major last advantages of shopping in an actual store is that you can always barge back in there and grab somebody to talk with. But we got to all band together, be tough, and share our experiences so we the consumer don't get bullied around! And I wonder why the word "at****ude" was all starred out in my previous post on here, lol.
