    Upscaling Video to 720p/1080i

Hey Matt, you mentioned starting another thread about upscaling to 720p/1080i via HDMI. To answer your question, yes I do upscale pretty much everything to 720p. As you know, I've got the DVD-3910, it runs HDMI out to a Sony KDF55WF955 (Grand Wega IV RPTV). I was FORCED to compare the output with HDMI to output with component, as the HDMI only worked intermittently at first! This was quite a bummer, but a firmware update from Denon fixed the problem. Although video looked great over component, there really is no comparison to the upscaled content. It has so much more detail and depth than it does at 480p. There are some naysayers out there who say that you should run everything to the display at 480i and let the deinterlacer in the display scale it rather than scaling twice, but I don't see that benefits the picture at all with my setup. When I put in something with reference quality video, like Episode 2 or Once Upon a Time in Mexico (Superbit), it looks as good as the better HD. I suppose if I had the money back, I would still get the 3910 not only for the video processing, the audio is great too! I think I would probably look for a display with a native 720p resolution in order to get 1:1 pixel mapping (GWIV has a native 768p, what's that about?). I'm really just nitpicking though, I love my setup!

I hear the upscaling is better for the fixed pixel stuff, like the Wega you have.  I have the KD-34XBR960 HD CRT, not so sure that I would notice the increase in resolution.  I would take a demo though, too bad I can't find one on loan anywhere.

But isn't standard DVD 480i/480p, making an upscaled 720p a simulation?

Thus the reason I would like to see it before I buy.  But, the unit has a Faroudja processor in it that is supposed to simulate 720p pretty well.

Hi Matt.  I've personally found that upscaling via DVI/HDMI has negligable benefits on a high quality CRT like yours.  I've found a that a good progressive machine like the Sony 999ES running component is about as good as it gets.

I just got this same tv yesterday. ( KD-34XBR 960 )   I am new to HD sets.

I just did a search and see there are a ton of upscaling DVD players that have HDMI output. Will this allow me to view DVD's fullscreen with my TV?

    RE: Upscaling Video to 720p/1080i

Well, you'll pretty much see DVD's fullscreen with any DVD player set to 16:9 mode.  ALthough, there are different formats of video and occasionally you will still see black bars on top and bottom of your picture even though you have a 16:9 television.

I've been really happy with my Denon DVD/DVD-A/SACD player.

I have been thinking about purchasing a upconverting dvd player. I have seen the denon players, all except the new dvd5910. Also the samsung, sony, and panasonic... is there another I should take a look at?  I have a 46" samsung dlp, and so far with standard progressive dvd it looks amazing.
