    New Onkyo HDMI 1.3a Receivers

    Hi everyone,

Onkyo finally released some info regarding their new receiver line...and its looking good!  At the high end, the Tx-sr905 ( msrp $2099) will include, 1080p upconversion using Reon-HQV processing,  HDMI 1.3a with deep color, Dolby Digital True HD and DTS HD Master..and much more.  Here is some more info from Twice.

Is this the one to get or should we wait for Denon?

     Thanks!

Those Onkyos look good; but I want to see what Denon does before making a purchase to replace my 10 yr old yahama.

If outlaw would develop a pre-amp with TrueHD and DTS HD master; then I would be all over that!

Re: New Onkyo HDMI 1.3a Receivers

I was ready to go plunk down some cash for a new AVR but doing some research things got a whole lot more complicated than channels and watts.

I have a Samsung 61" 1018p DLP HD, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box/dvr, 300 hour TiVo, Sony DVD (not progressive) with sound from a twenty-year-old Yamaha stereo receiver powering two twenty-year-old Polks.  Obviously, there is some updating to do.  I got the Samsung two years ago and am using an HDMI connection direct from the 8300.  Works great but have been waiting ever since then to go completely HDMI controlled via a good HDMI AVR.  The big holdback was the lack of HDMI switching in AVR's at a reasonable price point.

I started looking around and saw that there are many more HDMI capable AVR's now so was ready to pounce but then started seeing lots of issues with HDMI including incompatibility (copy protection), poor upscaling/deinterlacing performance, no support for the new HD disks, and only 1 or 2 HDMI inputs.  I was finally about to bite the bullet and just accept I wouldn't get everything I wanted when Onkyo pops their new lineup on us and it is impressive.

I'm really looking forward to the first reviews, particularly for the 805 and 875.  Both THX Ultra2 certified, three/four HDMI inputs and the 875 allegedly has one of the best video processors around (HQV Reon-VX).  The 875 is higher than I wanted to go but the numbers/features sure look great.  I would like to see what Denon is coming out with but it looks like they're not going to release anything until after summer and the 805/875 are supposed to be out in the next month or two.  I've got the itch and already ordered some of my new Aperion 5.1 setup....gonna need a receiver to power them soon.  Keeping the fingers crossed that Onkyo delivers on the potential and doesn't put out a bunch of poor working boxes just to get on the street first with 1.3 otherwise I'm going to have a tough time explaining to the boss why I have two grand worth of cherry wood blocks laying around the house.

    Hey KJ,

If you wait for the latest in technological advances, you may just end up with a bunch of beautiful Cherry boxes since advancements in electronics occur every day so that the manufacturer may provide the ultimate in conveniences and features that may out perform it’s predecessor.

I would suggest that you not lock in on the newest improvements and frill, but choose a respected receiver with features you can use now and power your Aperions with confidence.

All manufactures already have next-generation improvement in the works even before the latest finished product hits the market.

Re: New Onkyo HDMI 1.3a Receivers

    Hello Jack,

You're absolutely right.  If you make it a habit to continue waiting because of the "next big thing" that's right around the corner you'd never get anything done.  That's why I was getting ready to spring for a current AVR that provided at least the HDMI connectivity so I could avoid a rats nest of cables and standardize on HDMI networking instead of the hodgepodge of cobbled together systems we currently have; however, the current crop of HDMI receivers have some significant limitations.  Many are pass-through only, many won't upgrade analoge signals to HDMI and most are limited to just two HDMI inputs.  Several have even been determined to degrade picture quality with lousy de-interlacing or scaling.  Of course, some are also pretty darn good.

I've had a plan ever since I purchased my 1080p DLP to wait until HDMI was available at reasonable price points.  This really has just happened during the past year; however, the prospective total package offered by the new Onkyos is impressive enough to warrant a short hold on any purchases to see if their promise pans out.  If, for instance, while advertising exceptional advanced video processing the 875 instead implements the processing poorly it may very well not be worth the investment.  If so, the availability of a new series of AVR's means the prices of really good models from last year will plummit (they've already started to fall significantly).

Sort of a win-win scenario for me, all it'll cost is an extra month or two of waiting.  I'm practicing the spousal stiff-arm right now just in case. :-)

"The spousal stiff-arm"- that's freakin' hilarious!

Re: New Onkyo HDMI 1.3a Receivers

Wow this was a very good post to read. I am in the early phases of getting my basement finished and have just ran the speaker wires for the surround speakers. It is estimated my basement will be completed by July. Anyway, today I decided to order my speakers to ensure all of them are here by mid-June to get things broke in. I decided to purchase the Intimus 533 Cinema HD package in black. Looks like some of the stuff is ready for immediate shipment with some components shipping June 8th. I do not have a receiver yet and have done lots of reading on the internet about a receiver in my price range being 1000 or so. I saw some discussion on HDMI 1.3a and was thinking of waiting, but I do not want to wait after July for the new receivers.

After reading some posts in this thread I think I am going to get the Denon AVR 2807 and enjoy it until Blu-ray/HD-DVD is more mainstream. I do have an XBOX 360 with the HD-DVD drive but still think the sound will be fine without having trueHD sound...??? I have no problem with buying another receiver in the next 1-2 years if necessary. Should I be looking for something else available in July with HDMI 1.3a or get the Denon AVR 2807 and use that for the time being. I am just asking if anyone knows of anything being released in June or July that I should wait for?
