I was ready to go plunk down some cash for a new AVR but doing some research things got a whole lot more complicated than channels and watts.
I have a Samsung 61" 1018p DLP HD, Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box/dvr, 300 hour TiVo, Sony DVD (not progressive) with sound from a twenty-year-old Yamaha stereo receiver powering two twenty-year-old Polks. Obviously, there is some updating to do. I got the Samsung two years ago and am using an HDMI connection direct from the 8300. Works great but have been waiting ever since then to go completely HDMI controlled via a good HDMI AVR. The big holdback was the lack of HDMI switching in AVR's at a reasonable price point.
I started looking around and saw that there are many more HDMI capable AVR's now so was ready to pounce but then started seeing lots of issues with HDMI including incompatibility (copy protection), poor upscaling/deinterlacing performance, no support for the new HD disks, and only 1 or 2 HDMI inputs. I was finally about to bite the bullet and just accept I wouldn't get everything I wanted when Onkyo pops their new lineup on us and it is impressive.
I'm really looking forward to the first reviews, particularly for the 805 and 875. Both THX Ultra2 certified, three/four HDMI inputs and the 875 allegedly has one of the best video processors around (HQV Reon-VX). The 875 is higher than I wanted to go but the numbers/features sure look great. I would like to see what Denon is coming out with but it looks like they're not going to release anything until after summer and the 805/875 are supposed to be out in the next month or two. I've got the itch and already ordered some of my new Aperion 5.1 setup....gonna need a receiver to power them soon. Keeping the fingers crossed that Onkyo delivers on the potential and doesn't put out a bunch of poor working boxes just to get on the street first with 1.3 otherwise I'm going to have a tough time explaining to the boss why I have two grand worth of cherry wood blocks laying around the house.
