The controversial Gears of War post

So I don't really like Gears of War very much.  I know this is going to fly in the face of a hundred thousand 'ZOMG GAME OF TEH YEAR!!' posts, but I'm secure enough in myself to come right out and say it.

It's a gorgeous game.  Fun to play.  But so far ultimately a little vacant.  The story seems to be a hodgeposh mashup of quasi-scifi jargon, and the character design is pretty much MUSCLES N' VEINS N' ARMOR, which really bugs me.

Does anyone else have this problem, or am I just being too picky?  Why do I enjoy the xbox live version of Root Beer Tapper more than Gears of War?

    Alex,
You're being a bit picky, IMHO.
For one, the AI in Gears is pretty darned good overall (yeah there are a few bugs with the Bugs).  The Locusts don't to the typical no-brainer rush the enemy but take cover and snipe.  And their aim are pretty good, especially at the later hardcore and the insane levels.  You HAVE to take cover in those levels.
The interesting twist the game has on reloads and the timing of hitting the sweet spot for the best reload time is pretty cool.  And some of the weapons are great. Sure a chainsaw has no real place in combat, but there is something extremely satisfying in ripping into one of the Bugs.  And the Hammer of Dawn....SWEET!
And we both agree it's one of the best looking games out there right now.  I especially love the little jumpy camera effect it has when you crouch-run.

I am a bit biased in that shooters are my favorite game genres.  I've played a lot of them and Gears is pretty high on my fun list.  A nice way to unwind after a day at the office.

Yeah, the Hammer of Dawn is amazing.

I think ultimately I wish they'd spent a little more time on story, but what can you do.  I'm going to give it some more quality time, and maybe I'll have a different opinion after I play through the game.

I am unbelievably excited about CRACKDOWN, though.  Been playing the demo a lot.  Totally fantastic.

Agreed.  Rented it, played it for a few days, will never play it again.  Not because it was bad, just not different enough from other shooters.  Graphics were good but I didn't like how slow the players moved.

Maybe it's because they're all 3,000lbs of veins and grimace. Big Smile

I finally ended up beating this game, and I thought it was pretty darn fun.  I must admit that I am not the type of person who can sit down and play a game all the way through, so it took some time, but ultimately worth it.  A big draw for me was the graphics, the game was just so pretty in HD.   Crackdown does look like a excellent game, and I have been enjoying the demo...I may just  pick that one up as well.

Overall Gears is a great game for the story mode... The multiplayer is horrid and not thought out at all.

    Gears in
HD is an awesome sight to behold, not to mention all the grunts and groans from the locusts tingling your ears in surround.

My favorite frequented shooter is Rainbow Six Vegas... The multiplay on xbox live is top notch.

This game is a riot . The great thing I like the most is the online matches . Endless hours of fun . And sounds great on the HT .

Has anyone played Bioshock?  I know Alex loves it.  Personally I am waiting for Halo 3 and the 08 versions of Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer.  DOJ, what other games do you recommend?

Re: The controversial Gears of War post

I like GoW for the fact that people look more like people even if they are all muscle and veins. I wasn't impressed by the story, lot of loopholes. It is pretty much a story made up for the maps and levels. But it was a lot of fun to play. I finished the game on Insane. Played co-op with friends. The story mode campaign on solo and co-op were tough and fun. I played a few rounds of ranked matches as well. Another thing I like about this game is that you have no super human powers, you are always on the ground, not jumping around sky high.

I have a problem with games that have very high quality environment, but people look like cartoon characters. That is so old school. You know what games I am talking about. Even Halo 3 humans doesn't look real.

On Xbox 360, my favorite game is still CoD2. That may change when CoD4 comes out. Infinity Ward seems to know how to tell a story through an FPS game.
