Build your own speaker, tell me what you think...

Quick question for fellow Aperions. I'd like to know what type of tower speaker most "floats your boat". What type of tower speakers would you like to see from us?? larger power towers? smaller towers? To make it easier, here are your options below. Pick and choose from these options, or tell us something completely different.

(The tweeter isn't variable here, so it's not an option)

    1. midrange driver: one 4", two 4", one 5.25", two 5.25", one 6.5" or two 6.5".

    2. Bass driver (optional): one 5.25", two 5.25", one 6.5", two 6.5", one 8", or one 10".

    3. Subwoofer (optional): 8", 10", 12" (If you choose one of these tell me if it should be powered or not. If it is powered, how many watts do you want?)

    4. Port. Front, rear, or none?

If you want to go another step, tell me what type of dimensions you prefer. Have some fun!

Whichever one sounds the best and is priced right!

    midrange: 1 - 4"

    bass: 1 - 8"

Port: How about a transmision line with a front port?

I would like to see two configurations:

    OPTION1:

    1. (1) 4"

    2. na

    3. 8", maybe even 6.5" passive

    4. front

    OPTION2:

    1. (1) 6.5"

    2. na

    3. na

    4. front

What is the principle differences whether a spk is back or front ported???

a lot of it's visual. Putting the port on the back is nice so you don't see it, but putting on the front means you can get it closer to a wall without disrupting the ports bass response too much.

5.25 mid 8 bass port in front also, bi-ampable would be nice so you could the tweets and mids off one amp and the bass driver off another amp.

RE: Build your own speaker, tell me what you think...

I would like to see the 633-PT.  I suppose the size of the sub driver really is chosen by how well the crossover can be designed, but, a 10" powered tower would really be nice.  I would also like to see a subwoofer phase adjustment on these PT's too.  Wouldn't the ideal sub phase be approximatly 90 degree anyway?

Maybe that is already built into the PT's...

I should add that it would be nice to have the option of doing the internal crossover or, a direct line-level input into the amp section of the PT speaker.

The 633PT has come up before. Popular choice, potentially. Anyone else have feelings on a 633PT??

RE: Build your own speaker, tell me what you think...

EDIT: I should have read some of the other posts first.

With the 633 being deeper than the 533, could you fit a 10" woofer on the side instead of an 8"? That way you can try to reach as low as 25hz to satisfy most bass hungry people. Though, I guess space can still be an issue for that. If possible, maybe add a switch to disable the sub, kind of like changing the crossovers back to they way the regular 633-T acts for listening to music, unless turning the volume on the sub all the way down does the same. Maybe even add a 4inch driver above the tweeter.

I'd like to see some curves introduced to the boxes, a la B&W's 800 and 700 series. That would definitely add sex appeal and kick things up a notch! I'm really into bookshelf speakers, so the 532/632 are all I need, but in a 732 "high end" line. You can sign me up as soon as you've got some understated, pleasant curves up in this joint! David

that is a great idea! I love the look -and sound- of the B&W 800 series. Absolutely beautiful speakers all around.

RE: Build your own speaker, tell me what you think...

Yes, the extra depth on the 633 would work just fine for a 10" sub. ALthough it might be a slightly larger cabinet. We'll have to have the engineer look it over and tell us what's possible. I think it might need to be a little bigger just to have that top-of-the line feel to it.

I like the idea of being able to disable the sub crossover, so you could run the front of the speaker in full range for music only.

RE: Build your own speaker, tell me what you think...

I like the idea of curves as well. But that will be for a different family of speakers, which we are developing ideas for now. The Intimus family is all about the traditional, handsome, straight-line, look.
