Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.
Glad to hear you are into Tom Waits a little. I know this is about music and should be in that forum, but oh well. The Piano Has Been Drinking is from the album Closing Time, which is when Tom was very young. It's one of his first albums. That song makes me laugh...a lot. He has 'evolved' a lot over the years, but everything between then and now is just as great. I love the songs on Closing Time. Check some of these albums with your roomate's collection:
- Alice
- Big Time (Live album, mostly)
- Blood Money
- Rain Dogs
- Swordfishtrombones
- Bone Machine
- Mule Variations
- Real Gone
There are many more, but these get the most playtime with me. I can't recommend just one to start out with, because each one is a lot different.
Concerning Lynch, I love that he makes films the way he wants to, and not just to make money. So many movies are made to bring in profit, it's hardly art anymore. Granted, I love me some explosions and gunfights and any other loud noises, but sometimes it is nice to have to think about a film.
Lynch is very visual, obviously, but I love his focus on sounds, whether it be music or background/foreground noise. Much credit must be given to Angelo Badalamenti, who seems to just be an extension of Lynch. His movies would not be the same without Angelo's sounds (not to mention his performance in Mulholland Drive). All of this just solidifies the fact that every part of Lynch's movies is intentional. Everything you see and hear is the way it was meant to be. This is not really the case in his version of Dune, but he had Dino De Laurentiis running the show. Not to say that Dune was bad, but probably would have been better with more Lynch influence.
Anyway, I'll check out The Alphabet and let you know what I think.
