Any David Lynch fans out there?

David Lynch is one of my favorite directors, but most of the people I know who have heard of him really don't like his movies. In my experience, either you love him or hate him. For those of you who may not know of him, here are some of his movies:

    • Mulholland Drive
    • Blue Velvet
    • Lost Highway
    • Wild at Heart
    • Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (also Twin Peaks series)
    • The Straight Story
    • Inland Empire
    • Dune
    • The Elephant Man

I'd love to talk to some other Lynch fans, seeing as how most of my friends don't like him. I also really like David Cronenberg. Here are some of his movies:

    • Eastern Promises
    • A History of Violence
    • The Fly
    • eXistenZ
    • Videodrome
    • The Brood
    • Naked Lunch

    Any other fans?

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

I sir, am indeed a Lynch fan...

I haven't seen a ton of his movies, but I loves me some Twin Peaks. I've also thoroughly enjoyed Blue Velvet and Mulholland Dr. I tried watching his new flick Inland Empire a few times, but I couldn't make it past 2 hours and I had to return the movie. The beginning was pretty captivating, and then after about an hour or so all hell breaks loose...

What I like about his movies is the whole experience...Sometimes it's amazing dialogue, other times it's amazing filiming or the setup of a scene...He's got a pretty creative mind. Have you ever watched some of his earlier work? Like perhaps, The Alphabet, the Amputee, or Grandmother? Great short films...

I haven't watched a ton of Cronenberg, save The Fly. Maybe I should dig in a little more...I tried to attack the book Naked Lunch a while back but didn't make it. The idea sounds amazing...I'm making a mental note as we speak...

Word, David Lynch is definitely genius, although I did hate Lost Highway which I thought was kind of a movie that was set up to trick the audience into thinking there was a deeper plot underneath the weirdness when in fact there was not.  However, if it was necessary to lead up to the brillance of Mulhullond Drive, which is similar in some respects, then I suppose it was worth it.   Wild at Heart is probably still my favorite though, it's the perfect mix of bizarre and cute, with a more linear plot but still pretty out there.

Videodrome is my favorite Cronenberg, although Naked Lunch was a noble attempt at making a film out of an unfilmable novel.

Hey DG, you sound like a cool guy, do you like Radiohead?

    What's your opinion on broccoli?

I'm not sure what I like more...brocoli or Radiohead...No, it's radiohead. If I had to go the rest of my life without eating brocoli, I would be pretty bummed, but if I had to go the rest of my life without listening to Radiohead I just don't think I could manage...

I have yet to see Wild at Heart. Sounds like the type of Lynch film I would dig...that's why I like Blue Velvet. While it's not quite "cute" it has some amazing, bizarre scenes, yet still holds some of that linearity that you spoke of earlier.

    Jason, where'd the cheese go?

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

Glad to see there are some other Lynchians out there. DG, you definitely need to see Wild at Heart. While it's not necessarily "accessible" by most people's standards, it's one of the most entertaining of Lynch's movies. Some scenes are extremely hilarious, while others are, well...only found in a Lynch movie. I haven't tried Inland Empire yet, although most opinions I've heard are similar. An no, I haven't seen his short films, although I'd love to.

You guys got my attention with the whole Radiohead/Broccoli discussion. Both of these make life a little better. While we're on this topic, either of you like Tom Waits? If not, you should...in my opinion, at least.

    You guys beer drinkers?

By the way, I forgot to mention Eraserhead. Any opinions on this little gem?

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

Yeah Josh...Definitely going to get into Wild at Heart...You can view The Alphabet here:

So incredible man...Lynch has been holding it down for many years. He's got quite the creative mind...I couldn't find Grandmother anywhere (it's a bit longer...like 20-30 minutes if I remember correctly...) but it's worth scouting out. Pretty incredible.

My roomate has slowly been introducing me to Tom Waits...He frequently listens to a song called something like, The Piano Has Been Drinking Not Me...Quite a good song, with perhaps the most awesome song title I have ever heard. Haha...With that in mind, what would that song be like without a beer in hand? ;)

No Eraserhead yet...I really have a lot of catching up to do as far as Lynch classics go...Someday...

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out.

Glad to hear you are into Tom Waits a little. I know this is about music and should be in that forum, but oh well. The Piano Has Been Drinking is from the album Closing Time, which is when Tom was very young. It's one of his first albums. That song makes me laugh...a lot. He has 'evolved' a lot over the years, but everything between then and now is just as great. I love the songs on Closing Time. Check some of these albums with your roomate's collection:

    • Alice
    • Big Time (Live album, mostly)
    • Blood Money
    • Rain Dogs
    • Swordfishtrombones
    • Bone Machine
    • Mule Variations
    • Real Gone

There are many more, but these get the most playtime with me. I can't recommend just one to start out with, because each one is a lot different.

Concerning Lynch, I love that he makes films the way he wants to, and not just to make money. So many movies are made to bring in profit, it's hardly art anymore. Granted, I love me some explosions and gunfights and any other loud noises, but sometimes it is nice to have to think about a film.

Lynch is very visual, obviously, but I love his focus on sounds, whether it be music or background/foreground noise. Much credit must be given to Angelo Badalamenti, who seems to just be an extension of Lynch. His movies would not be the same without Angelo's sounds (not to mention his performance in Mulholland Drive). All of this just solidifies the fact that every part of Lynch's movies is intentional. Everything you see and hear is the way it was meant to be. This is not really the case in his version of Dune, but he had Dino De Laurentiis running the show. Not to say that Dune was bad, but probably would have been better with more Lynch influence.

Anyway, I'll check out The Alphabet and let you know what I think.

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

Yeah, you won't need too much time...As I said, The Alphabet was one of his shorts, so it's only about 4 minutes long...Watch it a few times, preferably in a darkened room. The sound effects are awesome, as well as the imagery...

I just got finished watching Fire Walk With Me last night, which I have desperately been wanting to watch after the finish of Twin Peaks. Good movie, although I could have used a bit more Agent Dale Cooper in it. I love his character...I'm sure everybody does. Badalamenti as well...Dude's a genius. I've learned to play a few of his Twin Peaks jams on piano...Classic.

Re: Any David Lynch fans out there?

    Tom Waits?

Definitely, although with an artist like him that has so many albums they do get a bit redundant after a while.

     My favorites:

Nighthawks at the Diner (just plain funny!)

     Closing Time

     Bone Machine

     Mule Variations

     Orphans Box Set

The coolest thing about Tom Waits is that he has two distinct periods, the singer songwriter-y stuff on Asylum like Closing Time and Small Change and then the weird stuff on Island like Bone Machine and Rain Dogs.  You have to respect an artist that isn't afraid to take their music in a radically new direction mid-career.

I couldn't agree more about Lost Highway.  Absolutely HATED that movie, could be the only movie I almost walked out on in history.

    Hate broccoli.
