Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

Got home from out of town last night. Did two 70 plus hour weeks. My brother was nice enough to set my new speakers in my apartment for me to walk in to upon my return. I started to unpack them and pre-stage for the morning install. Let me just say that the quality of packaging, wood finish and build quality all exceeded my expectations. Not to mention that all speakers were in velvet bags! Humorous antics are everywhere with Aperion. Right down to the instructions on the included speaker care kit (with decibel meter).

Started installing at 6am when I could stay in bed no longer. Got some sound around noon or so and was just beside myself as to how good the overall qualities of the speakers were even before any break in had been clocked. Tonal balance, imaging, blend. These speakers are exceeding my expectations. Had to relocate the sub from the original placement as it was too boomy in the corner. I forgot to mention how amazing how fast, tight, musical and plumy the sub is. Hats off to you Aperion.

Its now hour ten and I have openly refused invites to dinner and also refuse to leave my place. Just programmed my MX-850 remote from Universal so I thought to update the pictures on the forum. Just cant stop listening to movies and concert DVD's.

My equipment list is easy to explain. I have spent four years as a professional installer. Three years of which with a CEDIA certification. Not to mention I ran my own installation company for those three years. As I was a dealer for NAD electronics I left the mainstream industry with a T973 7-channel 140WPC amp, T163 Preamp,  T534 up-converting DVD player. I have a Sony 42 inch rear projection tv, Xbox 360 and it is all wired with Synergistic Research cabling. Aperion: S-10 sub, 532 L&R, 422 surrounds, and 533 VAC center. Salamander Designs "Architect" A/V furniture. MX-850 "Aeors" remote control from Universal remote.

Having installed many things I can not afford I have a good point of reference and offer this information to all. Aperion offers the best dollar to performance value I have come across in a speaker.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refule to leave my place....

    Daryl,

Congratulations on the arrival and setup of your new babies. I have the cherry Aperions also and they are the most beautiful pieces of furniture I own and their sound is even better than my Bose Acoustimass. Big Smile

I disassembled one of the Bose bass units, which is vinyl, clad and constructed of ½ inch LDF. The satellites are fine plastic and they sound about as good as they look. That bass unit is now a plant stand.

The Aperion’s sound matches the finish which is excellent.

This is one case where the real thing looks better than the pictures.

I was impressed with details in packaging and those white gloves.

Those are some mighty high ceilings.

    Happy listening.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

    Hi Jack,

Thank you. I would agree with you on all accounts. Not only do they look better than the pictures but the sound is leagues above Bose. Went through Bose training a couple of years back but my opinion of them is lower than ever. I have more stories about them but for one significant reason I can not display them publicly. My work builds production lines for them.

S-10 is amazing. Almost as fast as a Triad in room bronze. Even the 422's weigh more than PSB B25's.

Clocked about 16 hours so far. Impact and blending are coming together well. I actually left the apartment today. Only to get more concert DVD's and come right back. Do you listen to many concerts on your system?

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

    Daryl,

Actually I have never heard a concert DVD.

I am just so impressed with my setup even with standard FM channels. I just don’t like the commercials and fill-talk of the host. Even SD TV movies are great on this system.

I don’t have HD or Blu-Ray since I am going to wait until one becomes dominant but standard DVD movies in Multi-Ch are very good even in only 5.1 on my 7.1 System where the rear channels can be simulated in certain listening modes to provide 7.1.

I had 2 Acoustimass-7’s in my main listening area now employed as a computer sound system except for one of the bass units that is now a plant stand.

Although I have a number of posts here regarding what I feel is unnecessary power draw of the S-10, the S-10 is probably still my favorite speaker. The S-10 filled a void that was absent in music and movies for me for a long time.

I run my S-10 at about 30% and depending on the source I still find things that I need to isolate or secure to reduce unwanted vibrations. This is a good thing although my neighbors may not think so since I can then crank the volume higher.

    My Aperion Speakers:

    2) 632 L/R, 2) 532 L/R, 1) 532 C, 2) 534-SS, 2) 422 rear surrounds and an S-10 Sub.

    8 driven by Onkyo TX-SR805

    2 driven by Sony STR-DE997

My setup is probably rather unconventional but it works well for me.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

    Jack,

    Gasp....

    No concert DVD's ever?

Let me know what kind of music you would consider listening to or like to listen to. Between my two brothers and I, we probably have over three hundred concerts on DVD. Some are better than others. We could steer you towards a great show depending on what you like.

When I got my first home theater in a box I caught some kind of bug. The home theater bug. Two years after that I went to work for Ambiance Systems out of upstate NY. www.ambiancesystems.com This company has won every award out there and then some. I was in simply amazing homes doing multi million dollar installs. My teeth were cut on some exacting standards and extremely high expectations. Later I went in to business for myself and carried that theory and discipline with me. Long story short is that I was taught conventional methods and they were pounded in to me. In the end all that matters is the smiles on our faces and our happy ears.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

Its now listening hour eighty or so and I am so pleased with these speakers. My 532 Cinema package does everything its supposed to do and it does nothing that it is not supposed to do. We who hobby with home theater have a number of staples we use to test our systems from Master and Commander, War of the Worlds, The Incredibles, Eagles, Dido, Blue Man group and my new favorite Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds at Radio City Music Hall. All of these performances and movies are executed flawlessly.

Over the last eighty hours the mid bass from the bookshelves has become more dynamic. The S-10 has developed more character and had to be turned down as it now moves more freely than when it was first powered up. The 422 rears are nearly transparent and make surprisingly full sound for their full size. Despite the five and a quarter drivers in the front array deep voices like those found in Transformers get reproduced very well. The personality from the center is similar to that of one much larger in size. This could be due to one passive driver and one active driver.

My listening position is eight feet from my front array. The array is spread eight feet apart so it is a pleasant surprise that I get amazing imaging. Without reservation I would recommend Aperion speakers to anyone.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

Thanks for the Pics of your setup and feedback on how the speakers sound during the break in period.  I recently purchashed the 532 Cinema HD setup and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

I'm not a concert DVD person but I recently rented Cream: Royal Albert Hall on HD-DVD and was rather impressed with how the PCM audio track sounded on the Polk setup (5.1 in a box and rather dissatisfying) I have now.  Once I get the new speakers I'll have to rent it again to see how it is supposed to sound. :)

I was wondering if you had any suggestions for concert DVD's.  I'm mainly into Classic Rock (father raised me on Pink Floyd, Led Zep., Eagles, Steely Dan, Boston, etc.) but will listen to almost anything as long as it's not rap and has been mastered well.

Re: Listening hour number ten and I refuse to leave my place....

    Hey Diaggen,

My first HTIB was purchased near the release of Gladiator. I never thought I would enjoy concerts as much as I do now. They're great to do housework with or cook to.

I'll take a stab at your question and then get back to you once I hear from my older brother after I ask him what he has for concerts in that category that he would recommend. Eagles "When hell freezes over" is a great one. Actually there is one other Eagles I have heard that is amazing and I want to say it was in a gold jacket. Cant remember the exact title of the set though.

Pink Floyd has a few great concerts. Pulse is one of the more memorable ones. David Gilmour has two. One is David Gilmour Live (acoustic). The other is a recent release that I also dont know the title of. Roger Waters "live in the flesh" is also a great set.

As you say its all about how its mastered. I'll get back to you on others. You will be very happy and pleasantly surprised with your Aperion investment.
