    Re: RE: favorite beer!??

Are you kiddin' me!?!  I'm very impressed that this thread has been going since 5/2005 albeit intermittently.  Not sure I can isolate one favorite beer.  Of course, perhaps the best "old standby" should be Guiness.  But, I primarily love microbrewery fare even more than the classic euro offerings.  In particular, I love porters and IPA's which are basically polar opposites but who said one can't have a "manic" love for beer.

My favorite microbrewery as a whole lineup is Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR.  You really cannot go wrong with anything they do.

Can't wait to get my Aperions by which to sample brews with!

    Re: RE: favorite beer!??

Just joined and wasn't going to post since I'm trying to learn but then I found this thread.

Thought to myself...I can talk about beer!

I'm a hophead. And I'm a great believer in drinking local. If I'm in Germany or Belgium I'm glad to drink their fresh brew but I generally pass on stuff that's been shipped/stored for weeks or months when there's a place down the road making a great local beer. Drinking German beer here makes as much sense as drinking Coors in Germany.

Being in SoCal I'm a huge fan of Stone. My favorite is their Ruination Ale though their IPA is just fine. Their best known brand is Arrogant *** (a strong dark ale) and that's just fine also. Sierra Nevada makes a number of good beers. If you're ever in either Escondido or Chico, I'd recommend visiting the really fine eating establishments both these breweries have opened.

And while I'm as much a beer snob as the next beer snobby kind of guy, let's not belitte the weak yellow mass market American lager too much. Miller, Coors, and  A Busch all make fine quality lagers at an affordable price. I think the uniformity and familiarty is what breeds so much contempt. But there's nothing wrong with lagers. Or the American versions.

If you're interested in a history of American brewing (and who wouldn't be?) pick up Ambitious Brew by Maureen Ogle. It's a book. About beer. Really takes the sting out of reading.

    La VAPEUR COCHONNE

I have always enjoyed Vapeur Cochonne. It comes with both a cap and a cork. http://www.vapeur.com/vap03.html

Some favorites here, no particular order because it depends on where i'm drinking.

Fat Tire - Can get it at most stores

Guiness Draught - love it when I get it on tap.

Double Dragon - a cool Welsh beer while I when I lived in St. Louis.

Asahi Extra Dry - while eating sushi, I do eat a lot of sushi

    Goose Island Honkers Ale

Miller Genuine Draft - Standard fare when I don't want to spend too much.

    previous goodies -  Newcastle, Bass

I have lived near Harrisburg, PA so I've had Troegs, but I also loved ABC and Yuengling's ( America's Oldest Brewery ).

    Re: favorite beer!??

Glad this thread is still alive!!!

Have any of you tried the new Bells HopSlam yet?  WOW!!!  You can't really call yourself a hophead if you've never tried it.  If you don't have it available in your 'neck of the woods' subscribe to the www.beeradvocate.com website and join the trade club to get some great beers in trade.

What are your favorite session beers (drinking beer just to drink beer)?  My favorite has to be Summit EPA (extra pale ale), it has a great 'high end' flavor while still being very drinkable...you should give it a shot if you haven't.  I think you would be very surprised!

    Re: favorite beer!??

Unfortunately I can't drink beer too often due to an allergic reaction. How sad, I know! But--there are times when a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and that be gettin' down on some cold brew my friends, allergies be damned! I love a good, clean, simple Michelob to go with beer food quintessentials or when a hot summer day calls for something to quench my thirst--no muss, no fuss. But when I want a great tasting and filling beer, I go for the sludge--and Grand Teton's Black Cauldron Imperial Stout has been my brew of choice lately. It's what I think a bonafide stout should be: full of maltey, chocolatey goodness with some smoke thrown in for good measure. Man, I dig it! But I can't get it too often because it's not actually available here in Portland; but I have a distributor friend in Montana who brings me a case whenever he comes to town. Thank goodness I can't drink beer that often, otherwise I'd be permanently jonesin' for this stuff.

Black Cauldron??  Wow, what a great name!  If it's as dark, mysterious, and dangerous as that name makes it sound I gotta try it.  And, if I have to go to Jackson WY to get it, who's to complain!

    Re: favorite beer!??

Try out blackened voodoo.....another greta name.
Anyway, cheers from hopland (at least west of Hopland) (Seattle, WA).

I like the belgian hefe's (Franzikanner....probably not spelled right), some reds, and Chimay reserve is a great one (but when you're the Trappists and been doing it for three hundred years or so I think you learn Something!).

    Drink on!

    Re: favorite beer!??

I was born and raised in Portland and currently live in Lake Oswego and while I love almost all the micro brews we have to offer, my favorite beer of all time is from Holland. Anyone heard of Grolsch? Wonderful and delicious with a bit of flavor reminding you of an Amsterdam "coffee shop", and I don't mean the coffee. North Coast Brewing also makes a real good fruit style beer known as Great White. On the fruit subject, Marin Brewing Co. makes a Blueberry Ale, which has won numerous medals including the Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival 1990, 1991 and 1993.

    Re: favorite beer!??

Not only have I heard of Grolsch, I enjoy it often. I started drinking it in my early twenties, in the quart/liter bottle with the ceramic cap. The ceramic cap also was good for something else, something from my past. I will say no more!

    Re: favorite beer!??

Mirror Pond Pale Ale is my every day beer. If I was forced to have only one kind of beer for the rest of my life that would be it.

    Re: favorite beer!??

Anything Dogfish Head :) I'm from Delaware originally, and fell in love. 90 Min IPA is great. 120 Min is even better, but its like 16% abv and 8-10 bucks a bottle...

I live in Kansas City now, and I think Boulevard is great, specifically the Wheat.

Coors light and Michelob ultra when I'm trying to be healthy... lol

    Re: favorite beer!??

To chime in myself i would have to say Shiner Boch from Shiner Texas ( not sure if its nationally available but being from texas its abundant) and for import probably Dos XX's Dressed ( My wife prefers them dressed(( Salt around the neck and half lime squized in it.. not to bad and really changes the flavor.)
