    Speakers from Above

My living room has a vaulted ceiling, 13 feet tall at the highest point. I'm thinking of putting a pair of 632 LR speakers on a ledge underneath this high point, about 9 feet from the floor, with a sub woofer on the floor. Can you tell me what kind of sound I can expect? Musically speaking, will it fill the room, or will sound be lost with the speakers being so far above ear level?

    Thanks!

    Tim,

The sound may fill the room if you are sitting on a 6ft stepladder.Smile

But, all joking aside, you would really need to angle the speakers downward to the listening area so the tweeters would be on axis aligned with your ears. To aim the tweeters at your ears you would need to tilt the top of the speakers down by about 30 degrees if your seated position is say 15 feet away from the wall.

I have the 632’s on speaker stands which helps fill over 4500 cu/ft of total listening area in my 7.1 / 9.1 speaker setup.

    Hi Tim,

Jack's right. You'll need to angle them down considerably and this can be tricky with the 632-LR due to it's weight and lack of threaded inserts on the back. You can use the BT77 mount, but to ensure that they don't slide forward over time, a security screw needs to be drilled into the underside of the speaker. It's a small screw so with the cherry finish, this isn't a huge deal. It's all but impossible with the black lacquer finish.

Given the improved performance of the 5b, I think that it may make a better candidate. It still doesn't put out quite as much bass as the 632-LR, but it's considerably more fortuitous than the 532-Lr in the bass department and the midrange response is very comparable to the 632-LR. I think that blending these with a sub would yield terrific results.
