New Aperion Speakers. Should I upgrade my receiver?

    Hello,

I am a proud owner of 532's, 533-Vac, 422's and a S8 sub.  I currently have the STR-DG910 receiver and I have been very happy with it thus far.  Only problem is that the configuration capabilities are much to be desired.  I can only set the crossover for all the speakers at once and not individually.  That may not be a big deal but the other settings have limitations also.

I have been toying with upgrading the receiver to better suit the speakers.  But the Sony does have 110W per channel although at a higher tolerance for distortion than the others.  I recently decided to exchange to the 5B's and 5C so I have been questioning my receiver's ability to drive these speakers the way they are meant too.

After doing a lot of research.. i have been looking at the following models.  Yamaha V663, Denon 2308CI, Yamaha v1800, Onkyo 705,805.  I already know the opinion of some members hear about the onkyo 805's.. I wanted to get some opinions on the other receivers..

I don't care about the new codecs because I use the PS3 as my blu-ray player, and shortly it will have the ability to decode DTS-HD.  I am primarliy interested in the receiver's options for calibration, sound quality if that is even tangible, and power to handle the new speakers coming in.

So any opinions would be most appreciated.

But I suppose I should stay with what I got since it is working fine.

     Sincerely,

    Rockarruda

Re: New Aperion Speakers. Should I upgrade my receiver?

    I bought a Yamaha V1800 about a month ago.  I'm driving 5T's in the front, 5B surrounds, a 5C center and a Bravus 10D subwoofer with it.

I have a SD DVD player (Sony) connected to it and it does a pretty reasonable job of upscaling the standard def. DVD's.  I also have a CD jukebox, a high def. cable box and a VCR attached to it. I added the iPod port a few weeks ago.  The iPod sound isn't as good as I'd like but, to be fair, I haven't played around with it very much.  Everything else works fine and I have no complaints.

If you want the ability to set the crossover for each speaker you don't want the V1800. You can set the crossover, but it sets it for all speakers set to "small".

I'm no audiophile but I found the V1800 fairly easy to set up and it has a lot of flexibility.  I'd suggest you look over the manual (available at: http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documents/YEC/AV_Receivers/Manual/RX-V1800_Owners_man.pdf) to learn a lot more than I'd ever be able to tell you.

One note, the list for the V1800 is $1299 and just about everyone is selling it for $1199.  I got a coupon code for 6ave Electronics that cut the price down to $768 (free shipping and for me no sales tax).  Whether you get the Yamaha or one of the other AVR's check out SlickDeals.net for bargains.

Look the manual over, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I ended up getting the Sony STR-DA3300ES.. I got a really good price($549) and I can set the crossover for the fronts, center and surrounds.  So far I have been very happy with it..

    Thanks for the suggestion though...
