    Future Purchase

    Hello,

I am looking to upgrade the old HTiB speakers in our HT room and have my eye on Aperion.  The room is basically 12'x12'.  There are two rows of seating with theater chairs in the front and some Berklines in the back, on a riser.  The old speakers do OK, they are Sony brand, and we added a cheap sub to the set a couple of years ago.  My wife and I like big sound for the action/sci-fi movies we usually watch.  The room is not used for music much, pretty much dedicated to movies and some TV/sports.

    I'm thinking about either the:

    Intimus 5B-DB Fusion HD set

    or

    Intimus 5T-DB Hybrid HD

I'm interested in clear dialog with big sound/effects.  Which set would anyone recommend?

Here are some very poor pictures of the HT room (I have no idea where all the dust on the camera lens came from):

    Hey Cykopz,

Welcome to the forum.  A 12'X12' room is pretty small, so I would lean toward recommending the 5B-DB Fusion HD set as this system will fill your space nicely.  The 5Ts will still give you fuller mids, but I don't think that the difference for movies in a small space like that will be considerable enough to make them worth the extra money.

But if you really want the towers far be it from me to talk you out of them.  Wink

Also, the 5Ds are going to sound the best directly to the sides of your seats.  If you plan on keeping your surrounds in the corner like that a direct firing speaker like the 5B or 4B would be better as you don't want the 5Ds too close to the back wall because they will not reflect properly.

    Hope that helps!

    Re: Future Purchase

    Jason,

Thanks for your comments regarding which speaker set I might consider for my HT room.  I think the information on the rears will help a lot since the room is fairly small.  Now, I just have to decide on either the towers or the shelf style for the fronts!

As you can almost see I have the fronts just beside the "screen".  Would you suggest I move them out to a wider position to better cover the room as a whole?

    Thanks again.

EDIT:  Jason, while I am looking at one of your very nice kits I would not be against matching up a selection of your speakers if I could create a better overall setup for the room that I have.

    Re: Future Purchase

If you go with the 5Bs I would space them a little wider, maybe just 3-6 inches on each side.

If you get the 5Ts I would keep them in the same spots because a tower speaker will need more space to the sides to function ideally.

I think you choices for the fronts (5B or 5T), center (5C) and sub (10D) are all solid, for the surrounds if you do go with a direct firing speaker in the corner, the 4Bs should be more than sufficient since you will not be sitting very far for them.  If you can get the surrounds directly to your sides (hard to tell what is going on under those curtains!  Big Smile) then I would definitely recommend the 5D as it is our best surround speaker.

    Re: Future Purchase

Thanks for the additional info.  Sounds like I should be able to get a great upgrade to my current setup.

EDIT: As far as the "sides" go in the room when facing the screen the left has a wall but the seats fit right up against it.  On the right there is the doorway entrance so either the surround would have to come forward to the end of the right hand wall (before it stops for the entrance) which would put the speaker in front of the rear seats or a stand of some kind (wall or floor, maybe ceiling?) would have to be used.

    Re: Future Purchase

You want to put the 5Ds at least five feet high on the wall, so a stand isn't really an option.

If you spend most of your time sitting in the front row then it sounds like you can still get optimal placement for these seats with the speaker directly to the sides.

Sure the folks in the back row won't get the full surround effects, but just stick the kids back there, they'll never know the difference!  Big Smile

    Re: Future Purchase

Try putting the 5DB in the back wall above the back row which will diffuse the sound using the back wall. It worked well for me when I was living in a small apartment. Also, if you go with the 5B or 4B, I would still put them in the back wall but aim them towards the front wall so the sound will reflect off the ceiling for a more diffuse sound. This will also free up floor space. Remember, everyone is different on what they like so it will come down to what you prefer. Isn't great that Aperion has great return policy with free shipping both ways so you can experiment on what you like. If you can, order both so you can have them there so listen and compare. Then send back the ones you don't like or keep it for a future 7.1 system. Good luck.
