Blue Ray does give an extrodinary picture but as the article states, many people, for whatever reason don't see it.  I am looking forward to the Tosihba upconverting DVD player that is coming out this fall (or early next year).  It is suppose to use the cell processor and according to Toshiba it will have the processing power to turn DVD into picture quality equal to it's former HD-DVD which was the equal to BlueRay.  They claim it will be significantly less expensive that any BlueRay player.  Of course there is some marketspeak in there but their latest top two lines of LCD HDTVs appear to clean the floor with the latest Sony and Samsungs when it comes to processing prowess.  We shall see.

Problem is that not all Blu-Rays are equal in transfer quality...  If you compare "The Rock" between DVD and bluray YOU WILL SEE a difference..  If you can't then either your eyes need to be checked or your TV needs to be checked...

 Ofcourse other blu-rays aren't much of an upgrade over the DVD due to a crappy transfer or a sub standard encoding..(mpeg-2)

 Casino Royale is also a huge difference between Blu ray and DVD.. 

 

I know the movie Twister people weren't impressed with and I can confirm the difference isn't as large as the other titles I stated above...

Just started watching Blu-Ray's, too.  I can see a big difference for sure but we AV-types are focused on the improvement. The price difference was worth it to me, at least for the equipment.  I am renting Blu-Ray discs from Blockbuster Online but haven't purchased a BD disk yet.

Definitely some transfers are better than others. 

I downloaded a demo copy of Corel's WinDVD 9 Plus software. Produces a very nice picture for both Blu-Ray and HD DVD. 

The thing I was most impressed with, however, was the included standard DVD upscaling software feature - ALL2HD.  I saw a marked improvement on War of the Worlds and Gladiator.  I was very surprised to see that it looked better than my Oppo DVD player.

My opninion is that not all blue rays are made equal.  I have heard that the "Planet Earth" series Blue Ray collection will knock your socks off.  I'm thinking my net rental from netflix should be a planet earth disk.

Yeah that is pretty much what I said above... Planet Earth is very good... That is awesome visually...

I have not purchased a blu-ray player yet, I am looking hard at the Denon 2500 though.  For me I purchased a Toshiba HD A35 player and the up convert is excellent on standard dvd's.  My main reason for going HD in DVD's was mostly for the upgrade in the audio department.  The A35 when paired with a Denon 3808ci will knock your socks off-sound is amazing.  True HD and Dolby Digital +.  Picture is excellent too and paired with the HD sound it is better than the movie theatre.  Of course the Aperions deserve a lot of the credit for the HD sound also.

I have a PS3 and a Samsung 46" LCD and watching regular DVD's is almost PAINFUL now :)  You will notice a huge difference with Blu-Ray (at least the PS3).  Remember the difference between VHS and DVD?  Then the difference between DVD Component and DVD HDMI?  Well, there's at least that much of a difference with Blu-Ray compared to DVD.  You won't be disappointed

I've considered a PS3 for a BluRay player but I heard using the remote is a nightmare. True?  Can I program it into my Harmony?  Anything else I should be thinking about?

I purchased a Denon 2500 Blu-Ray player and it is a lot quicker load time compared to the Toshiba HD player-excellent PQ/AQ.  It is very hard to purchase a SD DVD.

I have a PS3, and I purchased the 20 dollar PS bluetooth remote. It is money well spent. Others have said using the game contoller is no big deal. For me, it was cumbersome. The dedicated remote is just as easy as any other DVD remote.

I have heard that you can get a USB dongle to get the Harmony to work. It wont work otherwise, as PS3 is bluetooth. I am still in the stone ages, and I don't have a Harmony. I love swapping between all of my remote controls! Well, not really...but anyway...

I will say that I am less than thrilled with upconversion on the PS3 for regular DVD. I prefer my Toshiba HD DVD for it, but the load times are painfully long. But BluRay....OM freaking G! Check out Ratatoui (SP?) or Casino Royale!

Thanks Scottiemon, that's good information. I wouldn't mind using the PS3 for BluRay and sticking to my Sony for standard def - it also does a good job of upconverting to 1080.  I'll do some research, this may be the way to go.
