    Speaker Stands

I just recently bought a 5.1 setup. A pair of 6B's for the front, a 6C for the center, and some 4B's for the surrounds. Anyhow, I have not set them up on stands yet. I was wondering if filling stands with lead shot or sand was a must due that the 6B's weigh 26lbs a piece. I do have a little one who is beginning to wander around so safety is an issue. If not needed that would be great due that I am already 3000 over budget. My original budget was 1000, but after my 5.1 setup, and an Onkyo tx sr 875, well you get the point. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The stands that Aperion sells for the 6B do not have a way to attach the 6B to the stand so the weight of the 6B is all that holds it down.  Becuase of this if you are on carpet you really need the spikes on the stands so it will not wobble at all.  The idea of adding sand or lead is to add mass to the stand/speaker pair.  However you must consider the ramifications.  If you fill the stand with lead it will be very very heavy, and very difficult to move.  If it should fall over it would damage the floor and the stand it self.  What it could do if it fell over on somebody is not something I would want to consider.  If you choose lead I suggest yo don't fill it as that will add weight to the top as well,  Half way up at most I would say.

Young children and speakers of any kind are risky business but for reducing the likelyhood of the speaker falling over you might get them placed in the position you want them sound wise and then anchor them to the back wall with a metal bracket of some sort.  If you live in an earthquake prone area this might also make sense.

    Cheers
