Let me start off by saying how great this forum has been for me. Thanks everyone. The last couple of weeks have been interesting for me. I got my 5.1 setup from Aperion. They sound incredible. My friends and family are jealous. So I bought the 875 and get it hooked up and try to upconvert to 1080p. No signal. At that point after further research, I find out that my Toshiba 10080p lcd tv is not a true 1080p tv. Bummer. I was going to buy a Bluray player, but now have no need. I go to demo a dvd for some friends of mine and my dvd player gives up the ghost. Today I bought an Onkyo sp 405 player from Circuit City and get it hooked up. Great pq, but is being upconverted through the HQV in the 875. However, my problem is in the OSD in my dvd player, I can either select 4:3 or 16:9. Obviously went the 16:9 route. Now I am missing some of the movie. My other dvd player played movies in their native format which for the most part these days is 2.35:1. I was wondering if this is standard on most upconverting dvd players. I would like to see the movie how they were intended to be seen which on the last two I have watched is 2.35:1. Anyone with any input please help. Do I need to return the player and go another route or am I missing something along the way. Thanks everyone.

It's hard to tell what's going on.  First, why doesn't your 1080p television handle 1080? Is it connected to your AVR with HDMI?

I don't think your problem is with the DVD player; it doesn't know or care what your monitor is, it's just sending a signal. I think it's your TV.  You should be able to set the format. I don't have a Toshiba but I do have both a Sharp and a Panasonic and, although the terminology is different, they handle things the same.  Bring up your menu for the TV.  You should see something like "aspect ratio".  My Panasonic defaults to whatever is sent to it or you can Zoom.  The Sharp has a "bit by bit" setting which just puts on the screen whatever signal it gets or it has a Smart Zoom and a Zoom (the Smart Zoom is the same as Zoom but it respects the borders of the screen better so the picture doesn't go off the screen).

Play around with those settings and your problem should get resolved. If not, post back with the model number of the Toshiba and some additional info on how things are hooked up (DVD to AVR, AVR to TV).

Thanks for your post. I actually found out it was the tv settings. I had it set to a Theater Wide Three, must have been my wife. She doesn't like those black bars. I have it now set to native. Got the measuring tape out, and it was 2.35 to 1. Silly mistake on my part. Now about my TV. I bought it December 2006. Its the Toshiba hl196. It's rated as a 1080p display. 1980x 1080 or something. But it cannot recieve a true 1080p input. I had no idea until I tried to run a 1080p signal through my Onkyo 875 with the Reon HQV chip and the display read no signal, and a non compatible sign showed on the OSD. Read some forums on it and found it to be true. Very misleading of Toshiba. I can only blame myself. If only I had researched it as much as my speakers I wouldn't be disappointed at all. I keep telling myself you cannot tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p on a 42 inch screen from 12 feet to help calm my temper. Oh well. And my wife's not about to let me buy a new tv after the 3800 dollars I just dropped on the audio side. Little does she know I am saving every penny to upgrade my 6b's to the 6c's. Then I will deal with the television.

Yeah, good luck talking your wife into a new TV!  You're right though the difference in the picture quality probably isn't noticeable.
