    onkyo receiver question

I'm gonna try to get one of the 805/705/605/505 on closeout while prices are low. I'm about to start getting the speakers but will get the receiver first.

Ok, what do I need in a receiver?

Plasma Tv  (720p or 1080p  does this matter what receiver I get?), PS3 blu-ray

    I will get the 4T, 4C, and 4B & velodyne sub

I want something that will be good and have enough power, but not the best there is.

    Re: onkyo receiver question

    Hey Brown.

Welcome to the club. Can you give us an idea of the room size? It helps when considering how much "power" you need. And how loud do you want your system? Earth shaking or not? The only reason the resolution on the TV would affect your purchase, I can see, is that if you buy a 720p plasma there is no need to spend money buying a receiver that will upconvert signals to 1080p.  If you have a 1080P plasma, then there is the argument over whether you will see a difference between 720 and 1080. It all depends on your screen size. I think people say that over 50 inches you'd see a difference, although there is A LOT of controversy over this as you can read from some av forums. Anyway, none of the receivers you listed upconvert to 1080p, I know that the 805 downconverts 1080i to 720p so that would work for you but 130wpc would be a lot for your needs unless you want the capabilities of running multiple zones (which the 705 does as well). I was deciding between the 805 and the 705 for awhile to power a pair of 5Ts, 5C, 4Bs, and 8D and finally decided that since I could get the 805 for an extra 50, why not just get it. Anyway my room is 12x18 and the 805 is ridiculously powerful for that size. I can't complain as I'd hate to under power the speakers. The last thing I'd suggest considering is that I've read that you should figure to spend ~30% of your budget on your receiver. Since you're spending ~1100 on speakers (minus the price of the sub), you'd be looking at ~300 for the receiver. Of course its only a rule of thumb. The largest differences you'd be looking at (I THINK) are from the 605 to jumping to the 705) in terms of HDMI (1 extra) and some of the sound processing. Maybe a guru can explain better.

Some information on resolution formatting:   http://www.aperionaudio.com/AperionU/flatpanel.aspx

In just playing around with google I found the 605 for $270:    http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXSR605/ONKYO/TX-SR605-7.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Receiver-BLACK/1.html

    The 705 is $429:    http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXSR705/ONKYO/TX-SR705-7.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Receiver-BLACK-/1.html

Keep in mind when purchasing onkyo that if you do not buy it from an authorized dealer onkyo will not back the warranty.  Here is the list of authorized dealers: http://www.onkyousa.com/locations_intdealer.cfm

    Hope that helps!

    Re: onkyo receiver question

    Greetings,

I have been toying around between two brand of AVR's, Yamaha and Onkyo and I have come to like the Onkyo the most.  It provides a deeper, more spacious and integrated surround field than the Yamaha with the Aperions, just my opinion. So I'm glad you are looking at Onkyo.I would either go with 605 or 805. The 705 has a little more power than the 605 but the 805 is where you get into better circuitry and better power supply.

Depending on your budget needs and room size I would recommend a 605 or 805. You can get some refurbs from an authorized Onkyo Dealer with a good reputation here:

Onkyo 605 3 year warranty and HDMI cable ($299 or $269 without 3 year warranty:

    Onkyo 805 $579 1 year warranty:

    Re: onkyo receiver question

I would suggest the 805.  Since you've invested in quality speakers, you need to go ahead and invest in a quality receiver that will power your speakers to their full potential.  Now, not saying that the 605 isn't quality, but if you want the best performance, I'd go with the 8 series.  Either way, you won't be disappointed unless you are a complete audiophile and heard them side by side.  Only then would you probably notice a difference :)

Oh, and as far as sub goes, you may check with Elemental Designs over Velodyne.  In Craigsub's list, they took pretty high honors and are less expensive

Do or do not, there is no try.

    Re: onkyo receiver question

I agree with Dan and Patrick regarding the 805. I love my 805. It's a pretty big monster so just make sure you have room.

    onkyo receiver question

    Thank you guys,

My room size is 12x16. 12 feet deep and 16 feet side to side. Vaulted ceilings.

I want the 5 series but I don't know if they are worth double the price. House (shack) is only 1200sq including the garage so I think the 4T are perfect size.

I listen to losts of music but don't crank it very loud. I will get the wadia itransport to hook up the crapple ipod to.

Is all the stuff on accessories4less.com Refurbs?

    Re: onkyo receiver question

12x16 would be considered a medium to small size room.  I'd imagine youd only be sitting 10 feet away or so.  So I say give the 4T's a shot.  If they're not enough you can upgrade. But then again you might be really, really happy!   I've been through the whole return/exchange process twice before and Aperion makes it quite easy.  Just call them up they email you a fedex return label (s) the same day. Package em up and go to fed-ex or you can probably schedule a pickup. Your money is credited back to you in two weeks or less. There is no worries. never had to Call Aperion and ask them when i would get my return refunded.  I would however go with the 5C as a center if you are getting a 5.1 setup.

Accesories 4 less does sell some new stuff like this Onkyo 804 (http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKTXSR804SLVA/ONKYO/TX-SR804-7.1-Channel-Home-Theater-Receiver-Silver-NEW-SALE-/1.html) but most of the stuff they sell is factory reconditioned. They get them directly from Onkyo and are authorized Onkyo retailers.   All of their refurbs come with a standard 1 year warranty or you can purchase a 3 year warranty for $40....It's up to you if you want to buy refurb or pay full price for a new unit.  I'm all about saving pennies so I can stomach a refurb from an authorized dealer.  I am interested in picking up an 805 from them after I sell my yamaha RX-V661 on ebay

Now choosing between the 605 and 805 is solely your decision but the 605 should be plenty powerful enough to fill that room.  It's up to you if you want the added sound quality that the 805's circuitry and power supply provides.

I'm not trying to push accessories 4 less down your throat just trying to show you a reutable place to get good deals for your money.  I mean, not all of us have a lot of coin leftover after buying Aperion Speakers :)

Oh and if you are looking for cabling go to www.monoprice.com for the best deals on HDMI, optical, subwoofer, speaker, and any other cabling you may need.   You will save a lot of money here.  Got all my accesories through them. never had a problem.

    Best of luck to you.

To confirm here is a list of authorized Onkyo dealers (accesories 4 less is on there):  http://www.onkyousa.com/locations_intdealer.cfm

    Re: onkyo receiver question

    Hey Brown,

Thats not a very small room. I think its more of a medium size. If you want to know the best line (4 or 5) for your size I'd do a live chat with guru and talk to them. Remember in the end you have 30 days so you can order the 4 line and if you think its not powerful enough you could always send it back for the 5. I have the 5's and love them for my space. They are extremely impressive. I know there are some differences between the 5T and 6T for music listening (none really for movies) since most people listen to music in stereo. However, I should add that the onkyo receivers have all channel stereo which sounds AMAZING. makes you feel as if you're at the recording studio. If you are a die-hard stereo music listening speak with the gurus regarding differences between the 4T and 5Ts. I just remember when I spoke with them regarding the 5T with 6T they said there's no difference in sound unless you're listening to tons of music in stereo. Just a thought to keep in mind.

I think the majority of their stuff is refurbs, however if you're not pressed for time I suggest google shopping every day. The price of the 805 drops to $615 every now and then new. I got mine new from vanns for $615 (free shipping) by checking the prices daily.

    Re: onkyo receiver question

+1 on Onkyo's all channel Stereo listening mode.  I have 5B's, 5C and 4B's and I am just blown away listening to music with All Channel Stereo mode.  If everything is calibrated with and SPL meter, the sound field created with the Onkyo and Aperions is very, very impressive.  The Yamaha I have has a 7 channel stereo mode and it does not impress me like the Onkyo's does. The insturment placement, depth and spaciousness created by all channel stereo is superb!  I don't listen to my music any other way currently.  It doesn't hurt that all Aperion speakers are timbre matched with the same tweeter.

A lot of speaker companies will put cheaper drivers, tweeters or enclosures in their lesser lines. you wont find that here. What  I find amazing  is You get the same High quality fiberboard, crossovers, finish, tweeter and drivers in all lines! Only thing really different is driver size, bigger enclosures, tweaked crossovers and maybe a passive radiator in the 5C. Awesome!  All right, i'm getting bubbly now.

    Re: onkyo receiver question

Hey Dan. Just wanted to thank you for that link, it was really an interesting read. Very interesting to learn that about the 805 and I especially liked the article on crossovers, although I'll need to hit it again in the morning after a nights rest to understand it. It looks more like greek right now than english.

    Jason,

Make sure you read the THX article link in the review to. There's a link to it.  Be warned that it is five pages but it gives you a real good idea what THX is all about...

    Brown,

Have you considered the 5C for a center?  Let me know how you like those 4T's

    Best of fun to you.

    Re: onkyo receiver question

I have even considered the 6 series all around, but find myself in the " will it sound $1-2k better than the 4 series" head game. I know the 5 & 6 series will sound better, but I think the 4 series will give me the sound I am looking for!  I can always upgrade it if  I find it less than expected.

Now, the receiver specs have me all confused. I don't understand the converting lingo. What kind of converter do you want. I will probably get the 720 (768) TV but what do I need for it to up & down scale properly? I see the 875 has the HQV Reon-VX Video processing but is that better for a 720 TV or better for a 1080 TV.

Brown. Just to follow up. I think my 5C outperforms my 5T's. It's an amazing speaker and I highly recommend it.

I know the 5 series would be better and if money was no object than I would get them, but I am upgrading from a 15yr old RCA 25" TV with no external speakers to a 50" plasma with the 4T's an a receiver. I think that will blow me away and be good enough for a few years!

You guys don't get jealous, but here is my current setup. "State of the Art" isn't it.
