Harmon Kardon AVR-254 and Intimus 4B Harmony SD

I'm considering purchasing the above components for my first Surround System.  In the future I will probably upgrade the fronts to 4T's.  I'd like them now, but there isn't enough space on the sides of my TV without pulling it out too far into the room.  So, my question is, will the AVR-254 be adequate for the 48 harmony now, and the 4T's if I upgrade in the future.

     Regards,

    Steven

I don't know the specs on that AVR but the 4T will be easier to drive than the 4B.

    Cheers

That avr is 50wpc x 7 speakers or 65wpc x 2 (stereo) which is at the lower end of the spectrum for what aperion suggests (they say lowest is 25wpc). Russ is talking about the sensitivity of the speakers...the 4T's are more sensitive so less power = more output. The 4B's are less sensitive so they need more power to "wake up."  I'm sure it would be fine but you may not be able to crank the volume very loud. I think the one other thing to consider is that if you try to turn it up and end up clipping the speakers, you can damage the speakers. Better to ask a guru.

    Hello Steven,

Honestly, I'd say go for it. I love HK receivers. They are packed with instantaneous, high current power. I bet that 50 watts per channel is probably near the low end of what that receiver can deliver. HK isn't really known for fudging specs like some receiver companies, so 50 watts per channel is probably a pretty modest spec. And as I said the power is super high current which is more important in driving your speakers then a high wattage # anyways.

And it should sound amazing with our speakers. HK's couple very well. I know that the 4B's have a 84 dB sensitivity which may seem a tad low, but one must keep in mind that for most of the listening that you do, you are only using a small fraction of what your receiver can deliver. The HK will really have the headroom to deliver if you need it. Man I love me some HK...

So again, in short, I say go for it!

    Hi Davey,

Thanks for the response.  That was my take after reading up on the receiver, but just wanted to get confirmation.  I'm not looking for window rattling volume.  I want quality sound and some video processing.   It's too hard to tell the difference in sound quality in stores. So I'll just have to test drive it at home and return it if I don't like it.  I don't mind spending 800 bucks on a receiver, but the ones at that price point have more power and features than I need.  As long as I can process current surround sounds and get a nice sound I'll be happy.

    Regards,

    Steven

Sounds good Steven...You should post your thoughts when you get it. I haven't got to try out their latest greatest quite yet. Would be nice to get some feedback...
