Re: What to buy, i have 606

Well thank you again very much for your help. I went ahead and bit the bullet on the 806 over at newegg. For the extra 50 bucks its kinda hard to stick with the 805. Especially since those units should go way down in the next month or two.

On thing i didnt check though is if the 806 can passthrough @24 frames for blueray. My wonderfull Samsung tv supports it, and i was able to do it on my 606. Is there any reason it wouldnt work on the 806?

Yep should be the same 1080p/24 pass through from the 806.

Glad I could help out, enjoy the 806 and let us know how it works out for you.

    Onkyo 805 Owner chiming in....FYI

The 805 only upscales SD to 480P. It will "upconvert" it to HDMI. Many confuse upconverting to HDMI with "upscaling".

The 805 downscales over component to 720P when passing to HDMI. :(  For this reason, I used "Y" cables up to my TV for my "GRRRR, MOXI Box"

The 805 passes through HDMI in the same resolution that is sent in.

For upscaling, you need the 875 or higher. Aside from a few watts, that is the big difference, as it uses Reon vs. Faroudia for video.

But since he went with the 06 series, I don't know about that.

Re: What to buy, i have 606

Just wanted to clear something up. As long as a receiver has HDMI and passes audio through it your AVR does not need onboard decoding of the new formats if your blue ray player decodes them internally.  Many people own a ps3 as their blue ray and it decodes everything internally and sends out mulchannel PCM via HDMI to your receiver...

Heck, as long as you have a blue ray player that internally decodes and has 5.1 analog outputs you don't even need HDMI inputs on your AVR to get lossles uncompressed multichannel audio tracks. Honestly, I think it is all a marketing gimmick to justify the price increase for consumers who do not know this.

It doesn't look like they had much luck with it but the 805 does have a 720p upscaling feature:

WOW, thank you everybody for the help.

The newegg price just seemed like a good buy. As for my 606 i put it on ebay for 279 w/10 ship and it went in less than an hour. Guess i should have asked for more lol :)

I will have to check that out. It is not a documented feature in the manual, that is for sure! I did read that sucker cover to cover. I will try it over the weekend when I get home. At least it is worth a try! Thanks Jason.

For the record the 806 Has 1080i upscaling for component output and 1080p for hdmi ouput :)
