7.1 surround distribution wall plate....? (also Onkyo ?)

OK, room is wired for 7.1 with #12 in-wall, etc... My question is, does there exist an adapter to terminate #12 speaker wire for use with an RCA jack? The wall plate subwoofer connection is an RCA connection on both the front and back of plate. If such adapters exists, please post where to buy them. Hope I didn't limit my options for subwoofer placement to "within reach of receiver".

One other question: Is it normal for there to be a 1-2 minute delay from the time an Onkyo receiver is powered on before it produces sound? On TV screen, ONKYO comes up right away, followed a few seconds later by the cab/sat video signal. It's just the sound that takes a while. Doesn't matter which sound format I select (using Direct mostly), still takes awhile, as if it has to warm up or process or...?

    Thanks! Rob

Does it really take 1-2 minutes before you get sound, or does it just feel that way....

If it really does take 1-2 minutes, that does not sound right. My 805 starts pumping out sound in about (as memory serves me) in about 5-10 seconds. I have never had to wait any longer than that.

Re: 7.1 surround distribution wall plate....? (also Onkyo ?)

It actually takes a couple minutes before the sound switches on. Picture takes a only few seconds following the Onkyo logo. I have only "programmed" the speakers thus far. I would think the "default settings" would kick in for both the sound and picture at the same time, yes? And the cab/sat is plugged into the correct jack.

In the morning I'll switch on the receiver with a DVD ready to go and see if there is a long wait for sound there as well. I will be disappointed beyond words if (at this price) I ended up with a lemon in need of service right off the bat. Hoping there is something simple I am missing here!?!  Hmm

Same thing occurred when I switched it on with a DVD movie, a good couple of minutes before the sound started. Picture came up within seconds of the Onkyo logo as before. Suggestions anyone? Confused

No idea on why your Onkyo is taking so long to send out sound but I thought I'd take a crack at your RCA jack question.

It sounds like you have a RCA coupler-type wallplate; it should have a female connector on both sides.  If that's the case, you'd just use a RCA male on the wire that's in the wall to plug into the back and a male RCA on the speaker you're connecting to the wallplate on the front. There are a few choices.  For inside the wall I'd go with either a solder connection or, if you don't want to solder, there's one that is crimped. You can also go with the banana-plug type (easy but more expensive).  You can find the RCA males at any electronics store (Best Buy, Radiio Shack, etc.).  I'd point you to monoprice.com but if you only need two you wouldn't save any money because of the shipping.

    Hey Robert,

Here's a wall plate that will go from speaker wire to RCA and I think it will take 12 awg, but I highly recommend you go out from your receiver's subwoofer output with a coax with an RCA connector as it will give you a digital connection rather than just speaker wire.

As for the Onkyo issue 1-2 minutes is definitely longer than normal, it shouldn't be longer than 30 seconds and should be more like 10-15.  You might want to take it in for servicing.

Thanks Joe. If you can point me to the adapter (convert #12 speaker wire into male RCA jack) at monoprice, I need to place another order with them anyway, so now would be a perfect time. If you can post a link, that would be excellent. YesRob

Re: 7.1 surround distribution wall plate....? (also Onkyo ?)

Thanks Jason. I already have this plate (see below) and want to wire it up, even though I will probably do as you suggest and go strait from the receiver to the sub. Only reason I might go with the wire is if the sub doesn't work in the front of the room. I wired the walls with extra jacks for any potential placement needs. I actually have a second smaller surround plate to cover some of those extra options. Kinda overkill visually.

I'll wait for my new sub to arrive and try it out with the receiver to make sure IT works fine. Contacted Onkyo this weekend and am waiting to hear back from them. Hope their customer service is better than some of the reviews I've read about them on other forums. Seems like at that cost level, they should better test out the units before shipping. Although we have a service center in our state, it's still going to be a royal pain to take it there. Rob

I was suggesting that you use one male to male RCA coax on one side of the plate and then another on the other side, wouldn't that work?

Sure, as long as there is an adapter to transform the two wires (in-wall #12 speaker wire) into a male RCA. Too late to run coax in-wall, as the walls are finished. Rob

Re: 7.1 surround distribution wall plate....? (also Onkyo ?)

gotcha, didn't realize the wire was already run in the wall.  If that's the case I would take a speaker wire preterminated at an RCA and just use connectors to attach it to the existing speaker wire.

    Hey Rob,

When and where did you purchase your Onkyo? All this talk of service makes it sound as if the company who sold it to you won't exchange it... is that the case?

Re: 7.1 surround distribution wall plate....? (also Onkyo ?)

Bought it from newegg. With so much else on my plate right now, I haven't even contacted them. My guess is (although I'm not certain), they would tell me to take it to an authorized Onkyo repair center. We do have one somewhere around Atlanta. I dread having to make such a trip, but it would still probably be quicker (and cheaper) than trying to ship it back. Have to look into this. Still have not heard back from Onkyo yet.

New sub arrived today, (LFM-1 Plus) and I gave it a quick listen. First impressions: Not overly impressed with it watching TV (satellite). Then I put in a DVD (Gods And Generals), fast forwarded through to give a listen to certain spots. The sub reinforced the base nicely and at times "felt" like a theater. There are plenty of adjustments to make on it (should one choose to), so I'll reserve final critique for another day. Should work out quite well with the aperions.

Time to hit the hay here. Rob

Hey Rob, I live north of Atlanta in the Rome/Summerville area.  What part of the state are you in?
