I finally decided to get some more quality cables from monprice. For anybody that does not know of them they have very high quality stuff for very low prices. Anyway, I decided to run component from the panny DVD player recorder I have and I thought I might as well get an optical cable to connect to my little ole Onkyo 503. They came in in a few days and I was quite pleased with the cables. The component was easy. I thought the optical would be easy as well. Setting up the panny DVD was easy but the Onkyo arg. It turns out that before my Onkyo would let me select the optical port to use I had to connect audio cables to the Onkyo DVD analog audio in RCA ports. You know, the ports that won't be used! In the process of trouble shooting I tried all 3 optical ports and in every case the little flimzy, plactic, dust fighting, flap that covers the port broke off. What a pain. Does anybody know where I can get plugs to fill them? Also, is it just me or do others here think the optical connections are a bit wimpy, for lack of a better word. Cheers

I'd rather go antique shopping with my wife (in the rain on college game day) before messing with optical connections. They work fine as long as you don't move, rearrange, add, remove or clean your AV equipment. Seriously, when you do get them to work, leave them the hell alone! They're that sensitive.

Indeed the optical connections are kind of "wimpy". I can't say I know of anywhere to get dust covers, you might have to just roll with some electrical tape on the ports you aren't using.

joetag:I remember my grandfather being on his death bed, barely able to breathe. In a hushed whisper he called me over. He coughed a few times and put his hand on mine. It was so sad to see him this way; he was always such a vibrant man, full of life. Me motioned me closer and struggled to lift his head. In a soft, labored whisper he said to me, "never use optical". And then he was gone.
Sounds like grandpa was a wise man. Cheers

"I remember my grandfather being on his death bed, barely able to breathe, grasping his free Aperion hat in his feeble hands, ...". If only he lived long enough to appreciate 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. I raise my glass

I do have optical running from my Charter Moxi (ugh) box to my Onkyo, and it does fine. Realize that I had to choose either that or red/white LR, as it does not have HDMI. Funny story...embarrasing, but funny. Keep in mind I know my stuff, and actually at one time made my living from car audio. But this was my first experience with an optical cable. I tried so hard to get the optical cable to plug in, to no avail. My thought was that cheapie I got from Amazon was no good. So....off to Radio Shack to get another one. I ask the sales person to get me one, handing him the one I had and telling him I just could not get it to fit. He then proceeds to pop up the plastic cover that protects the ends of the cable. I don't think I ever felt dumber than I did at that moment. Anyway, if you have a choice, don't use optical. If you have no choice, it works just fine!

I showed that to my wife, she rolled her eyes and said, "what? not duct tape?" The woman has no appreciation of the technical differences between electrical tape and duct tape *sigh*.
Joe If you can't have fun doing it, it's probably not worth doing.

Good to see you back JoeZ; you were MIA there for awhile. It's nice to have another Yamaha AVR owner here to fight off the spreading Onkyo plague! I hope all is well.

Thanks, good to be back. Btw... I paired the new Yamaha BD-S2900 Blu-ray to go with the VX-1800. Needless to say, awesome. The plague is among us here at Aperion isn't it. It's all good. Where's our good buddy Jack been hiding? JoeZ

Sounds good. I haven't gotten Blu-Ray yet but I sure am enjoying the Aperions and the Yamaha. I haven't seen/heard from Jack in a long time :-(

I actually saw a fly by Jack sighting about a month or so ago. Then, about an hour later, his post was gone...... I loved Jack....I wish he would come back.....I have a hunch we wont see him again...which is too bad, as he had a wealth of knowledge he was always happy to share. There was a guy named Fred Swearingen that fell in the same category. They both said goodbye and that was it.....I did have the pleasure of swapping private messages with both of them before they left. I learned a lot! If you are still out there guys, it would be nice to see you again.

Hey Joe’s, I have not been hiding: I have been enjoying my Aperions count of 12 now. Most of the time I just use 10, but on occasion I kick in the second AVR and run 2 more Fronts, the 532’s. Yes, these are the older presentation of the line, but they serve me well. IF I am not the Jack you reference, please disregard this post. Jack
