    Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

I have a 2 month old receiver that will shut off about once a week. Just doing normal TV viewing. Has anyone experienced this problem? I called Onkyo and they aren't going to do an exchange without my unit first going to a local repair center. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Fred

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

I have an 805, and have not experienced this problem. That is a bummer about having to send it for service. I know first hand that if a problem cannot be reproduced, "there is no problem". Since it only shuts off once a week, with no rhyme or reason to it, I would not bother taking it in.

Now, if you can reproduce the problem at will, or it happens more frequently, then it would be time for service. Your amp has a two year warranty, so I would not loose any sleep over it yet.

Good Luck. I do love my 805.

Maybe one of your front speaker connections is loose?  If only one speaker is connected to the front channel often times that will shut the receiver down.

    This is a good one...

Also check to make sure that you don't have any loose wires floating around. If you have wires touching the incorrect terminals, that could definitely inspire some funkiness in your receivers performance...

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

I read a lot in here about how hot the Onkyo's are - is it possible that it's not getting enough ventilation and it's shutting itself down?

If you can't have fun doing it, it's probably not worth doing.

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

I have the Onkyo TX-SR875 and yes I have heard that it gets hot.  I think the earlier versions (when they first came out) might have been hotter as I have probably one of the last ones of this model.  It is warm on top of the receiver but not scalding hot.  So, if you do have this receiver in a cabinet or a covered enclosure of some kind, it might be a good idea not to put it there.

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

I would check the wiring.  When I first wired my surround with an Onkyo 605, the thing would periodically shutdown.  I had two little tiny strands of speaker wire touch inside a speaker wall plate.  That's all it took.

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

    Hi Fred,

I did have my 805 shut off unexpectedly a few times but the problem was actually me pressing the sleep button by mistake while I was increasing the volume or setting the remote mode to Receiver. The sleep indicator is difficult to see.

If you have a wiring problem, I would expect the shutdown to occur more often. I also disconnected one of the front speakers and the 805 powered all my other speakers with no shut-off.

I have had my 805 for a 1 and ½ years and love it.

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

Agreed.  I had a loose speaker wire connection and although my AVR didn't shutdown it would freeze up and emit a loud noise.  I went back and cleaned up all the connections and haven't had the problem since.

    Hey Dan,

I don’t think you own an Onkyo 805.

This is an Onkyo 805 specific thread.

Do you have any experience with the Onkyo 805?

I do own an Onkyo 805.

Wow Jack you revived a thread that had been dormant for two weeks to say that?

Even though Dan doesn't own an 805 there is plenty of troubleshooting advice that is common to any piece of electronics.  Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the laws of physics the same regardless of what brand or model of receiver you are using?

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

    Hey Jason,

    Yes I did.

People revitalize threads that have been dead on this forum for a year or more.

My point is if someone posts a question regarding a specific piece of equipment, the poster might want to hear from someone who actually owns that equipment and has experience with it.

There may be subtle differences between AVR’s that affect the overall performance. With a front channel on the 805 disconnected, the 805 produces sound to all other channels without freezing or shutting down.

I will agree Jason that all information you can get is good food for thought but you must weigh the validity regarding your particular situation.

The original poster of the thread has not posted back but I would be interested to hear of his findings, wouldn’t you Jason?

Do you fault me for bumping this thread Jason?

Each manufacturer of electronic equipment may treat a perceived problem in a different way.

All generic fixes are applicable but each piece of electronic equipment has it’s own specific characteristics and may react in a multitude of different ways with similar inputs.

Jason, all AVR manufacturers probably do not adhere to the laws of physics and for you to stipulate that this is a fact is not true.

If you have a Corvette would you take it to a Ford dealership for a diagnosis?

Jason, are we Friends or Foe?

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

    No I don't own one
    Yes, i agree.
Yes I have some experience with an 805
Glad to hear it, great AVR.

I'm thinking your trying to say that since I don't own an Onkyo 805 that it is wrong of me to give whatever knowledge I may have on the subject, even if the knowledge is credible, based on past experience?  If someone were to ask why their knife won't cut like it used to, would it be wrong of me to advise sharpening it, even if I don't own the specific knife they are using?

Look, I fully understand the notion that no info is better than bad info.  That's what i do for a living.  I support users.  if I don't know the answer, I get back with them.  So i try my best not to respond to posts where i haven't a clue.  But, If I have knowledge, i'm going to share it regardless of whether i own the product or not.  I hope you can understand where I'm coming from here.

By the way.  How are those 12 Aperions of your's doing these days?  I recently picked a a refurb s-10 with a new amp and couldn't be happier with it.  The 200 watt Bash amp and 10"driver combo is deceiving.  Mine hits clean and hard and disperses Bass evenly throughout the room.

    Welcome Back Jack!

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

    Dan,

I realize that knives are almost as complex as modern Avr’s. There are new features added every year to knives that give them their own special personality that may require a unique sharpening technique.Smile

Ok, on a more serious note, I thought that possibly you were just trying to disqualify my post by agreeing with the poor connection posts. I may have been wrong in that assumption. I realize that you are trying to help others as do I and I read all of your posts.

I did have an intermittent shutdown problem with my 805 but the problem was my use of the remote, as I stated above.

It has been over two weeks now and maybe Fred found the problem and has just not reported back yet.

Thank you Dan for the welcome back.

Re: Onkyo 805 Shut Off Problem

Nah, i wasn't in no way shape or form trying to disqualify the part of your post regarding the remote issue. It seems like a valid point.

I was just saying that I was the same page as you with the following part:

If you have a wiring problem, I would expect the shutdown to occur more often. I also disconnected one of the front speakers and the 805 powered all my other speakers with no shut-off.

I was only stating that I had a loose speaker wire connection that caused my Denon some frequent lock up issues.

In any event Fred now knows he might want to take a quick look at his speaker wire connections and his remote settings.

Please don't assume I'm in disagreement with you or that I am trying to make fun of your comments.  If I disagree, i typically will do so in a respectful manner.  After all why should one burn bridges with others who are just trying to help.

Hope all is well with you and your Aperions....BTW...Off topic here.  Just saw Narnia, Prince Caspian... The visuals and DTS sound track on that are exceptional.. If you haven't had a chance to see it, I highly recommend giving it a listen through your Aperions..I'm Sure the DTS MA soundtrack would be better yet!
