Best sound in a game

OK, the Game Forum doesn't seem to get a lot of traffic, so I decided to see if I could get a good thread started, especially since we ARE a speaker company.

What game do you think has the best sound in it or is/was one where you really were aware of the impact of the sound? Doesn't matter whether it's computer or console based. Old or new.

I can remember back when Thief: The Dark Project came out back in 1998 (yeah, dating myself a bit). It was one of the first games I can remember being blown away by the 3D audio (since I also had a soundcard that supported 4.1 surround). I would just have Garrett sit in a dark area not move and I could tell that the guard was coming up behind me from the left side just by listening.

It's the first game I could remember that it felt like I was really in the game.

Which games stand out to you?

Wii Connection

I'm planning on buying a Wii and looked at the manual for my Yamaha RX-V1800 and the online manual for the Wii about connecting everything together.

The Yamaha manual doesn't mention game consoles at all and the Wii manual doesn't mention AVRs. I did a google search on the topic and found some references to HDMI but I didn't think the Wii had HDMI. Clearly I can connect the Wii to the front of my AVR but that's 1. not attractive and 2. I don't see how I'd get the best video/audio that way. FYI, my Yamaha is connected via HDMI to a Sharp 1080p LCD televsion.

So, the question is - how do I hook the Wii up to maximize the video and audio?

Hey Guys...

I'm still tweaking with my new Aperions and am pretty happy with the setup. Pioneer SC-05 with 5Ts, 4c (size restrictions), four 4Bs for surrounds (waiting for my 4BPs side surrounds to arrive), and a 10d sub. Still breaking in the speakers, but they sound beautiful for both music and especially for movies.

I'm hooked on Rock Band 2 and the Aperions make this game a whole new kind of fun. Here's the problem... I've noticed that at the completion of each song when the crowd is cheering, I hear a low muddy bass sound. I suspected that my sub placement may have been the problem, but it sounds very clean for everything else. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a problem with my setup or just bad sound choice on the part of the game's designers?

File Sharing PS3

Greetings,

I have my PS3 hooked up to my home network but I'm wondering if I can play music files located on my home PC from my PS3. Can't seem to find anything on it in the manual. I can get on the internet with my PS3 but can't seem to see any file sharing options. I've got a bunch of .wav files on my home PC that I want to tap into from my ps3 and play over my system. Anyone know?

Ok so after being adventurous, slightly bored and answering the call of the audiophile in me, I decided to call Sony about the PS3 and HD sound debate to get an official answer. There have been many opinions on forums as to whether or not the PS3 reproduces this sound, the true high def sound, since it can't send the info via Bitrate but decodes the information in the system itself and outputs it as Linear PCM via HDMI 1.3 cables. As a result, many people have questioned if getting a PS3 is worth it since it may not be able to reproduce HD audio accurately and the sound you actually hear may be standard Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 instead. Well, the official answer from Sony Customer Service is that if you have the HDMI 1.3 cables and a receiver that has the HD audio seal of approval, the sound you hear from the receiver through the best speakers you'll ever hear (i.e. Aperion) is Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio, whichever you choose! So is keeping the PS3 an option a good idea when deciding on which blu-ray player to go with? You betcha

Oh my goodness. Just downloaded the demo for NCAA footbal 2009 for PS3 from the Playstation store. Graphics and gameplay are awesome...My buddies and I are going to be spending quite a few late nights playing ball and slamming beers. Now if only i could get them to get some Aperions so I can enjoy the audio when I'm playing at their house.

If you like football games this is the one.

Any must-have PS3 only games out there yet?

Admittedly, I don't have a PS3 yet. I am still holding off for a while and truthfully don't feel compelled yet to get one. In my opinion, there aren't any must-have games out yet that are exclusively PS3. Maybe, and that is a big maybe, MotorStorm, which I played at a kiosk - that was fun. But nothing that is screaming at me yet.

Wonder if anyone else had some opinions?

The controversial Gears of War post

So I don't really like Gears of War very much. I know this is going to fly in the face of a hundred thousand 'ZOMG GAME OF TEH YEAR!!' posts, but I'm secure enough in myself to come right out and say it.

It's a gorgeous game. Fun to play. But so far ultimately a little vacant. The story seems to be a hodgeposh mashup of quasi-scifi jargon, and the character design is pretty much MUSCLES N' VEINS N' ARMOR, which really bugs me.

Does anyone else have this problem, or am I just being too picky? Why do I enjoy the xbox live version of Root Beer Tapper more than Gears of War?
