I've read that square rooms are not good for acoustic reasons. Can anyone explain this to me? What can be done if a HT is in a square room? Are there acoustic treatments or anything that can be added to improve sound?

5Ts + 8D in the small room vs. 6Ts (no sub)

I recently purchased a speaker set from Aperion (5Ts, 5C, 4Bs + 8D), and after testing them for couple of weeks, I must say I'm still astonished by their ability to reproduce sound - they are superb product, indeed! After reading few posts on this forum, my appetite for delicacies grew even more, and I started considering the upgrade to 6T. So here's my dilemma, and few questions arising from it: I mostly appreciate the speakers when listening to music (aprox. 70% music / 30% movies), so I'd definitively be willing to move up to 6Ts, but there are two things that stir my mind - limited space in the room, and (of course), the budget. My room is about 11x16, and you can see here

that it is tight by the shorter wall where the equipment is located, and I would say that 5Ts fit rather nicely. Having much deeper 6Ts in there would necessitate positioning them even closer to the walls - would it adversely affect the acoustics? And because of the budget, when upgrading, I would have to give up on the sub - how's the sound of 5T + 8D in smaller rooms compared to 6Ts with no sub? Furthermore, how different the sound would be when comparing 6Ts alone against 6Ts + 8D?

I hope some of you will help with your knowledge and share some suggestions - all will be greatly appreciated!

all you people with dedicated media rooms will probably laugh at this post. however, i have my home theatre set up in my living room and so space is very precious and limited.

my 1 years anniversary of purchase is almost over so i decided to upgrade my system from Intimus 4T Hybrid SD to Intimus 4T-CB Hybrid SD. while the bipole 4BP surrounds aren't a drastic dimensional step over 4Bs, when i first saw the box for the center 5C, i thought aperion sent me a subwoofer by mistake. that thing, compared to 4C, is BIG! and i mean B-I-G. that thing is bigger than my 4T towers.

i actually started laughing with perplexity when i pulled it out of the box and compared it side-by-side to my 4C. i couldn't grasp what a huge difference there is between different classes of aperion speaker systems. it made me wonder how big the class 6 is. gee.

anyway, this isn't anything negative, rather, a bit startling. i can't comment on the sound quality yet as i'm still breaking the speakers in. i did just get the new star trek movie on blu-ray so i can't wait to unleash its reference-quality, dolby trueHD lossless 5.1 soundtrack onto the voluminous 5C and the 4BP bipoles.

8D or 10D?

I'm trying to decide between the 8D or 10D for a future purchase. The room that the sub will be in will be about 20ftx15ft. Does the 10D deliver $300 more worth of bass? It only goes 4hz lower than the 8D...

Are these the right speakers for the right job?

I'm thinking of buying the following in the future: 2 4T's, 1 5C, 2 5B's, 1 10D. I plan (at this point) to drive them with an Onkyo 607 or similar midrange receiver.

These speakers will be used initially in a 13ft by 13ft room, and later in a larger room (perhaps 20ft x 20ft), but for now let's focus on the smaller room dimensions. The speakers will be used for both music and movies, about half and half. I usually listen to CD or iTunes music on all 5.1 channels. (I have not gotten into any SACD, DVD-A, or Blu Ray Content) I don't see myself listening to much music in just 2 channel form, I usually have it spread out to include all the speakers.

I was initially going to use 4B's for my surrounds, but I noticed that the reccommended crossover point for these speakers was around 100hz. I have heard a lot of things about bass becoming directional above 80 hz. So in order to avoid a "gap" in frequency coverage from 80hz to 100hz I chose to go with the 5B's so that I will have full frequency coverage on all the speakers without introducing localized bass. Is this a good choice?

Does this sound like a good setup for my half music and half movies intentions? Are there any other recommendations or bits of advice? Thanks!

6B vs 5B

I'd be using these for nearfield use (while at the computer). I'm most concerned about sound quality. Would the 6B be a step up in terms of overall sound quality vs the 5B? Since I'm so close I'm not worried about the volume capabilities of the speakers.

They would be powered by a 110wpc Pioneer VSX D912. My current speakers are Polk Monitor Series 2.

Need Help Making Decision.

Hi this is my first post and seriously giving some thought on making a purchase but dont know where to start. Mainly looking for front three and sub, maybe some surrounds down the road that would be an in ceiling type. Listening would mostly be for movies and games maybe 30% music. My room configuration is kinda open 12ft X 24Ft that els off to a kitchen. I was looking 5t and 5c but dont know if this would be to over powering, seating would be about 10ft from tv. Any suggestions?

Any recommendation on should i got with 7.1 or 5.1 given that most of the content is 5.1(90% based on your tutorial )

Why is 4t-CB costlier than 5b sd? evenif 4t is older?

How loud is too loud with 6B's in a 5.1 system?

I have 6B's for my fronts, a 5C for the center, 4B's for my rears and a 10D for my sub. All of this is hooked to an 7.1 channel Onkyo 706 with 100W/channel in a small (<1800 cubic square feet) living room with wood floors and 9 foot ceiling. The fronts and center are about about 9 feet from the seating area and the rears are about 7 feet to either side. I did the Audyssey setup included on my receiver. Crossovers are set at the standard 80Hz.

Given the low sensitivity the 6B's (82 dB) do I need to concern myself with speaker damage or clipping (especially with uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD soundtracks from my blu-ray player)? I routinely play movies at -10dB (sometimes as loud as -5dB if its not too late) and it all sounds pretty fantastic to me. What would clipping sound like if it was present?

wireless surround speakers in the making

I recently read the below press release regarding the offering of new wireless Aperion speaker products in 2010. Will they work via an fm transmitter? I currently have an Onkyo 605, a pair of 6t's and a 5C. I am going to purchase an Aperion sub soon and wanted to also invest in Aperion surrounds but I could kick myself for not running speaker wire under the rug when I re-finished my family room two years ago. This sounds like something I and many others would be interested in.

Noise from my Bravus 12D

I bought a Bravus 12D subwoofer this past spring. I love it! Amazing sound, power and low bass. I use mine exclusively for music, as I’ve got a separate home theatre system set up in the family room. I had it only a week when I got a warning letter from the home-owners association. Oops!

For as much as I like the sub, I have an issue with it that I can’t seem to resolve. I keep my sub on “Auto” mode. During quiet musical passages, in between songs or before it goes into hibernation after use, the sub makes noise. If it is in “On” mode the noise never stops. It’s not a super loud noise but it is certainly audible and impossible to ignore in a quiet room. The best way I can describe the noise is that of a hot, open microphone that is not in use, but is unattended and just picking up and amplifying background noise. I've had this issue from day one with my sub.

I have a Rotel receiver that was purchased new at the same time that I bought the Bravus 12D and decent quality cables. Any ideas about how to eliminate the noise?

It's time to choose surrounds to compliment my 6T's and 5C?

I was wondering if 4t towers would make good surround speakers or if I should go with the 5db's instead? What would be the proper arrangement for the 5db's? Are they normally behind the listener at about ear level? In what instance would you mount speakers on the wall above the outside ends of the t.v. as opposed to behind the listener? thanks

5Bs or 6Bs for 2-channel w/sub?

Hi all! Another newbie to the world of Aperion here, looking for some sage advice before buying...

I'm looking for new speakers to pair with my Outlaw RR2150 receiver and Outlaw LFM-2 sub. My trusty Paradigm 5SE mk3s are showing their age, and the Paradigm Titans in my kitchen aren't up to the job.

Some additional information. Obviously, I'm a 2-channel guy. I've decided to use bookshelves because of the size of the room (about 14' x 18', with an approx. 12 foot distance between speaker and listener) and my satisfaction with the low end provided by the LFM-2. Usage is almost primarily for listening to music (of all genres) -- I do watch movies, but for some reason I'm not at all demanding about the audio associated with films.

So the question is... would you go with the 5Bs or 6Bs for 2-channel audio w/sub? The savings associated with the 5Bs would help me upgrade my CD/DVD transport sooner rather than later, but I'd opt for the 6Bs if there were a clear advantage.

Question about speaker setup and all these formats!

I am looking to create a home theater in the basement of our split level and I must admit that the more I read right now the more I am confused! I am sold on getting Aperion speakers but am still trying to figure out the speaker arrangement and which speakers to get. Some details about what I would like to do first...

- The size of the room is 22' x 25' with 8' ceilings. The TV (tentatively a 65" plasma) will be on one side of the room against the wall while the couches will be approximately 2/3 of the room back.

- We are not into music at all. I am strictly looking at audio for movies and perhaps video games in the future (currently have a Wii, eventually will get an Xbox 360). However, I really want the audio quality to be top notch when watching blu ray movies. I really want to "feel" all of the effects and get a true movie theater experience.

- I want to get something very good right now, but I have no intentions to upgrade it as new technology comes out. Perhaps when 3D TV becomes common, I will upgrade the TV. For the audio portion, I plan to keep it as is for a number of years.

The first problem I have is the receiver. I am torn between the Onkyo 607 and the 1007. Will I hear an audio difference between these receivers? As I understand, the 1007 allows some different speaker setups but I am not sure how effective they are. I do not want to spend money if it is unnecessary, so if there is no reason to get the 1007 I will get the 607.

The next questions are about individual types of setups. First, the setup I am looking to start with is the 6T Hybrid DB.

- Subwoofer. I have read on some sites that adding a second subwoofer is a big improvement. Which would give me the best result - adding a second subwoofer or getting the XD subwoofer instead - or will neither of these show a noticeable improvement in the bass?

- Height speakers. The Onkyo's can do Dolby Pro Logic IIz which as I understand makes effects such as helicopters overhead and rain much more real. I have also read differing opinions on whether one can hear the difference. Is it worth doing this? If I do this, which speakers would work best for height speakers?

- Front wide left and right speakers. These are in addition to the left and right speakers and are used for Audyssey DSX. Do these honestly make a difference? I can't find much info on these, so I'm a bit skeptical they are useful. Any opinions on these would be appreciated.

- Surround speakers. As I understand two go directly behind the listener and two go on either side. I think whether there are two or four of these is the difference between 5.1 and 7.1. Is this correct?

Finally getting my Aperion system tomorrow!

I just wanted to poke my head in and say hi. As a new Aperion owner I wanted to say thanks to Ed and the rest of the guys for TOTALLY hooking me up this weekend with a gorgeous set of 6B's in Cherry and a great set of stands.

We (my father in law and I who attended the event) went home to my in-laws after the event and set up the 6B's on the stands provided. He has a nice Hafler IRIS pre-amp/NAD CD player/B&K amp setup and we ended up listening to lots of various music for the next couple hours. Pink Floyd Brick in the Wall was outstanding! We were both extremely impressed with these guys and my father in law kept trying to get me to leave the speakers behind at his place :)

I've got them home now and all set up in my living room. I will try to post pics tonight of the setup. Currently, it looks a bit like a GTG as I've got AV123 X-SLS' as mains and an X-CS as the center channel with the 6B's flanking the SLS' on the outside then my Velodyne DLS-4000R next to the Aperion's. It's kinda funny to have it all set up like that! I haven't had a chance to A/B the 6B's and SLS' yet but I will soon.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and thanks for the speakers, they will be loved VERY much in my house :D

Alternative Spikes for 4T?

Does anyone know of any long third-party spikes which fit a 4T base?

I got my system on Saturday, and am very happy, except for the provided spikes which make no difference on my thick wool carpet, and the towers are still very wobbly. I contacted Aperion, and Jason kindly offered to send me some slightly (1/8") longer ones, but I didn't think that was longer enough to improve the situation so I declined.

The spikes on the last set of floorstanders I had (Kef Q50) were much longer and more lethal, and would have absolutely made it through my carpet, although in this house there's a concrete slab floor underneath, so perhaps that isn't such a good idea after all.

Jason tells me the threaded inserts are M7/20 (which I think is a rare size in this country, making the job even harder).

pairing a small center channel with larger floor speakers

I need some advice on a center channel speaker. I have a mirage mc-3 center and a pair of m590-i floor speakers.

Right now I have the center speaker behind a 52in lcd tv pointed upward because there simply wasn't a better place for it. The downside is that it's not pointed directly at the listener and there's no room for it in the tv cabinet and I'm pretty sure putting the tv on top of it is bad news.

Even though it is smaller than my current speaker, the intimus 4c would fit in my cabinet properly. Would there be much of an issue as far as improper balance? I'm assuming it has to be better than a larger center speaker that's indirectly aimed at the listener and muffled by a large television.

Surround Help!

I just posted this on AVS Forum as well (forgive the double-post) but wanted to cover my bases. Had a great visit to the demo room today (may need to go back based on my confusion below)...here's the question:

Help! Looking for some expert advice from you folks here on this forum. Building my home theater from scratch (addition to the house) and need some advice. First of all, the basics:

- 17x16 room
- Plans are with the city now for permits...haven't broken ground yet
- 7.1 set-up that will (probably) be driven by an Onkyo 807
- Usage: 40% PS3 gaming, 40% HDTV, 20% movies. Probably little to no music.
- Promised the wife the room would be multi-purpose (treadmill in there, kids can have friends over, she can have girls night)...so it can't feel like a pure theater...so I'm trying to not go too overkill on the speakers.

I was originally thinking all in-walls to save some space (room is not that big) and aesthetics. Went over to Aperion today (live a few miles away) to test out the demo room. One thing became abundantly clear...I'm now doing 5T towers in the front and the 5C center. Forget the in-walls ;-) And I think I've settled on the sub: 8D

Now I'm left with my side and rear surrounds. This is where I start to get confused. They are used so little I was thinking to go with the 6-IW in-walls. In the demo room I heard the 5DB and it sounded GOOD. But I just kept thinking that my room was going to be about 5 feet shorter than that room and my sides and rears will be a lot closer together...so is the 5DB overkill? The way I see it, here are my options for my sides and rears:

- (4) 6-IW in-walls sides and rears
- (2) 5DB sides, (2) 6-IW rears
- (2) 5DB sides, (2) 4BP rears
- (4) 4BP for sides and rears
- (2) 4BP sides, (2) 6-IW rears

I keep thinking that with a room that is only 16 x 17 I'm not going to need a TON of side/rear power. Seating will probably be at about the 12 foot mark so you'd have sides at about 12 feet and rears about 5 feet back.

So, looking for suggestions to pair with the 5Ts...the last consideration I have is that the ONLY wall I'm worried about in-walls on is the rear wall since it shares a wall with our kitchen. The other walls share with either outside or the garage so not worried about in-walls for the sides. Perhaps I consider something like the 4BP for the rear to avoid sound seeping into the kitchen?

AHHHH!!!! Maddness!!!

Before a few hours ago (the demo room) I thought in-walls were the way to go. Now I'm lost...but those 5Ts...mmmmm.... Suggestions from anyone to help clear my brain is welcome!

Front HT Speakers - 6B/5B or 6-LCR

Just purchased a new home that won't accommodate my Klipsch towers, which gives me the perfect opportunity to upgrade to Aperion speakers. My question is whether to go with bookshelf speakers wall mounted or in-wall speakers. I primarily use the speakers for movies and video games.

The family room/kitchen combo room where the speakers will live is 21' wide by 32' deep. The rear speakers (Bose), left by the previous owner, are in the ceiling 18' from the TV wall. The remaining 14' behind them is the kitchen. The front speaker location is prewired where the ceiling meets the wall for those little Bose cube speakers. I could mount 6Bs or 5Bs there (9' from the floor) and angle them down. My fear is that the 7-degree angle the Aperion brackets allow isn't enough for optimal listening at 10' to 12' back. The other option is to install 6-LCR speakers 5' from the floor.

So the basic question is... Bookshelf speakers 9' from the floor or in-wall speakers 5' from the floor — which will give me better results?
