-A simple review....-

Saw this last night. Overall it was a great movie, but not super great. Visually stunning though. *****

So yes it was a bit long (2hrs 40min). I think they tried to cram too much of the graphic novel into a movie, which can get messy for some viewers. Allot of back story if your not familiar with the watchmen, so it does catch you up. A few slow parts but overall it played out well. Not your typical super hero story and the movie did a good job at it being so raw. This is NOT like watching a Batman/Ironman movie at all. It was rated R as it should have been, although NR might have been better . I felt 300 was a better adaptation, but then again that's a whole different animal. Can't really compare those two too much. The characters' were done extremely well. I can't stress enough how amazing this movie looked. This will be in the blu-ray collection. Rorschach owned

Bond, James Bond

I saw the new Bond movie this past weekend (Quantum of Solace) and just wanted to see if I was alone in my disappointment. For those of you haven't seen the movie, but plan to - stop reading now.

The movie opens OK with Bond in a car chase, things blowing up, slamming into each other. Good stuff.

But, I think there are a few essential elements to any Bond movie:

M: OK, they had M but it was Judi Dench again which isn't my favorite role for her, but OK, she did a good job.

Q: No Q??? How can you have a Bond movie without Q?

Gadgets: Well, with no Q, no gadgets. Come on! How cool is it to see Bond in a situation that no human can possibly escape and he hits a button on his watch and a laser cuts half the bad guys in half?

Very Cool Car: Bond was driving an Aston Martin at the beginning of the movie but after that he could be found in either a Ford or a VW bug. Neither of them had rockets, machine guns, ejector seats, etc. Heck, I don't even think they had GPS.

Evil Bad Guy: Yes, there was one but he wasn't all that creepy compared to other Bond movie villians.

The biggest disappointment of all - the movie didn't end with Bond in bed with the "Bond Babe". For this movie, it's Olga Kurylenko. He clearly had a shot at the end of the movie but all she got was a love peck. Yes, Bond had sex, but it was a one-night stand with a staffer who later became "the oil girl" - see the movie and you'll understand.

On top of all that, the action scenes are very choppy; it looked like they got a new editor who wanted to show off his talents.

It was sad. I love Bond movies; they're great escapes from reality and they're perfect for couple viewing with the female drooling over Bond and the male drooling over the Bond Babe and loving the improbability of it all.

Am I being overly critical? Any Bond fans out there? What's your favorite Bond movie and why?

Transformers 2

I just watched transformers 2 on bluray and it totally blew me away. It's the best movie I have watched on my home theater system. The sound that comes through the Aperion's are awesome. My boys like it when I crank up the volume to 55 on the Onkyo 607.

Any Star Trek reviews?

Just wondering if anyone seen Star Trek and what did they think of it? I have found even bad movies if they have awesome surround sound in them makes the movie better. I love hearing all the special effects come through the Aperions.

Good movie to check out your surround sound

I watched on a movie channel the other night a movie called Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie was kinda corny but the sound effects was AWESOME. My boys 8 and 10 liked the movie and actually I watched it again just to listen to the surround. I am anxious for Gi Joe to come out, I wonder what the surround sound will sound like?

I just watched "Eagle Eye" last night. The best way to describe this movie is to say that the ENTIRE production was and is, in every way, a waste of the earth's natural resources.

Blu-ray (and DVD) movies or music to compare 8D, 12D

Hello all,

I just put in an order for a 12D to compare to the 8D that I already have (in my trial period). Would someone please recommend movies (Blu-ray preferably, DVD fine too though I don't usually actually watch those anymore) that might make the differences clear?

Jason Hicks suggested Iron Man and Transformers. I did see the thread on the latter movie, and I don't mind annoying the neighbors to do the comparison, because maybe I won't always have neighbors. (Or maybe I will become a curmudgeon who doesn't care about being a good one, though I doubt it as I'm too much of a live-and-let-live libertarian.)

I would also welcome DVD Audio or CD recommendations. My typical listening includes classical, 70-80s progressive and "classic" rock, and new age.

What blu ray to watch with boys 8 and 10 yr old?

I am in the process of building a house and while my wife has building her dream kitchen I have been busy building my dream home theater (I had a budget of $5,000 went a little over). I have so far a 10d, 5C, 5t's, 4B's, Onkyo 607 and just ordered a PS3 today. I am planning on ordering a Panasonic 58" plasma sometime this week cause our house is almost done. I have accoustical ceiling tiles and can lights that are on dimmers. I have been telling my boys about how awesome our home theater will sound and I want to get an awesome blu ray that will blow us away. Give me some ideas, I do allow them to watch PG13 movies so that should open it up a little more.

Nite Tales - The Series!

So Nite Tales is coming out with a tv series. Its based on the movie (same name). If you haven't seen the movie its kinda like Tales from the Crypt but even better! Its going to have a lot of cool actors on it! So keep an eye out for it on WGN on august 7th!

Original Star Wars Trilogy in HD on Spike

Man, has anyone been watching the Star Wars Trilogy in HD on Spike? Holy cow they look great for 30 year old movies, much better than my standard def DVD versions. Watched Empire last night and Hope the night before--absolutely beautiful picture. But now that just made me salivate for Blu ray/high-res software versions with lossless sound. Knowing Lucas though, it'll be years before this happens. I mean, didn't the DVD versions just come out like, a few years ago?

I don't go to too many IMAX format movies myself - never can justify the premium charge that theaters charge to see a film in IMAX format. But it seems not everyone is happy with IMAX. Apparently, they have a new digital projector which works with a smaller screen in various theaters. The screen isn't much bigger than a standard theater screen, but IMAX and the theaters are still charging the same premium price.

The Dark Knight

"Why so serious?...ah ha HA HA hah aha HA" kept going through my head as I went to bed last night after seeing the midnight show. I will definitely be going to the IMAX to see this one again. Very well directed, Oscar-winning acting by Ledger portraying a true Joker character and edge of your seat action/suspense throughout the movie in its entirety.

I know it can be a hassle to try and figure out which movies to watch, which is why i have been going to www.rottentomatoes.com. They have some of the top critics opinions and offer you a unique "Tomatometer" The tomatometer measures the percentage of positive reviews from approved tomatometer critics for a certain movie. I think anything that gets a 60% or above is considered fresh. The have a lot of tools like top 50, hottest rentals, etc. I like it better than netflix becuase it seems to be more up to date on what's newly released and what's coming down the pipeline.

I've been using rottentomatoes for a while to help me with my netflix queue but noticed it was quite a hassle going back and forth between the two. I recently noticed rottentomatoes has added a feature to automatically add a movie to your netflix queue and thought that the combination of subjective reviews and ability to update your netflix queue may be another useful tool to help some people who are on the fence deciding what movie to rent ;)

I am actually a bit angry with my roommate for showing me this website. It's a site that has links to tons of movies and TV shows available online. So far I have jumped back into rewatching HBO's 6 Feet Under, as well as catching up on missed episodes of Season 4 of Always Sunny In Philadelphia...

Ok, off the top of my head...

Star Wars Trilogy (original)

Although GL seems to be ****izing our beloved childhood favorites on the eagerly anticipated DVD release, and nearly sinking the enterprise on the pre-equals (that are not worthy to carry the SW seals of the originals) what these films did for the film industry hasn't been replicated since. THX, Skywalker sound, etc. were created from these movies alone. ANH was a pioneering acheivment, and ESB was the first cliff-hanger of it's magnitude.

Casablanca

I only watched this movie for the first time this past year, but damn did I fall in love with it!

Gladiator

I was blown away the first time I saw this moive!

Lord of the Rings trilogy (Fellowship of the Ring)

Again, setting the visual standard for movies to follow.

Halloween

I generally do not enjoy horror movies, but I love this one. Maybe it's the idea that it could really happen and that is what makes it so good? I think it finds itself on this list because this is a genre I normally despise, and somehow this movie overcomes that and for that, it is highly regarded IMO.

I know I am leaving out some great classics (and probably many I have never even seen!). I'm sure I'll think of 10 other movies I could put in my top 5 as well, but off the top of my head, these are it! What are yours???

Iron Man

I rented Iron Man last night kind of lacklusterly and ended up being pretty impressed. I thought they did a real good job with it. I liked better than the Spiderman and Xmen movies. Thought it was very cool how they made that movie very modern day with the whole terrorist theme and stuff. Any other thought????????/

Anybody watch this movie yet? I saw it and actually quite liked it, but I have been hearing very mixed reviews. Some have even said that they straight up disliked the movie. I find it would be near impossible for me to say that about a Coen brothers movie...

Been having my mind blown by movies lately

It's been a very long time since I saw a movie that REALLY amazed me, or made me reflect on my life in an introspective way. But that all changed last week when I saw No Country for Old Men and then There Will Be Blood last night.

Both movies absolutely blew me away with their storytelling, settings and acting.

No Country for Old Men

First off, I'm a huge coens nerd. I've loved everything they've ever made (yes, even including intolerable cruelty, which received its fair share of cruelty from the critics) and though I tend to like their more oddball-oriented pieces than the more serious and violent films they've done, I think they've made the film of their career. Fargo is my favorite of their movies. It is such a perfect balance of everything they're good at, and came at just the right time. That said, even though Fargo is still my favorite, No Country for Old Men is the BEST movie they've made. It's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Perfectly paced, MASTERFULLY acted, and absolutely absorbing with Javier Bardem putting in the performance of his career as.. well pretty much the scariest dude in history. A lot of people are kicking up serious static about the ending, but I thought it was the perfect way to wrap up such a violent and random piece of art.

There Will Be Blood

PT Anderson ALSO made the movie of his career. While his other films have been wildly entertaining and inventive and excellent in pretty much every way, There Will Be Blood is an absolute "LEVEL UP" in his abilities as a writer and filmmaker. From easily the best establishing scenes I've ever encountered in a movie to the setting and cinematography to the performance of Daniel Day Lewis that borders on supernatural - it's nothing short of astounding. All the other performances were excellent, but Daniel Day Lewis turned in work that creeped into my brain and has kept me thinking for quite a while now - the mark of excellence that all good movies provide.

Of the two, I do think that There Will Be Blood is the better - but I'd be hard pressed to think of a better movie I've seen in the last five years. Maybe ever. They are up there with the best I've ever seen, without a doubt.

Any David Lynch fans out there?

David Lynch is one of my favorite directors, but most of the people I know who have heard of him really don't like his movies. In my experience, either you love him or hate him. For those of you who may not know of him, here are some of his movies:

I don't go to the theaters very often, but I went to see this movie with a friend, and lemme tell ya I loved it. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is just a great actor. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that he has acted in that I did not like a whole heap. I doubt I ever will...

Spiderman 3
