Music similar to "The Village"?

Hey Everyone,

I'm a huge fan of James Newton Howard's soundtrack to "The Village". I love the strings and piano and the music is very moving. Does anyone else really like this sound track? Can anyone recommend other albums that have a similar sound that they really enjoy?

iTunes import formats

I listen to most all of my music through iTunes via a Mac Mini in my entertainment system. Most of my songs are in MP3, either 160 or 192 kbps.

Now that I have some REAL speakers, I'm thinking of re-importing my CDs in a higher quality format. iTunes offers Apple Lossless (which sounds very proprietary) and VBR (variable bit-rate) at up to 320 kbps.

I'm very interested to hear from other forum members about their thoughts and experiences. If you are using iTunes, how do you import your CDs??

Bought tickets for Shadows Fall, found out these guy's are the Headliners. 1st album out in 2007, new album just came out9.22.09. I predict that This band will be the next Arena Rock, ala Gun's & Roses, Metallica, and Pantera.

I came across this SACD which totally blew my mind.

In the last track, volume being at 0dB, I was totally blown away by how the speakers filled my house!

I am glad my downstairs neighbor was not home at that moment.

Oppo BDP-83 review with plug for Aperion

I was reading the review of the Oppo BDP-83 on cnet and noticed a little plug for Aperion. Looks like cnet uses the Intimus 4T Hybrid SD in their listening room. Nice!

Beatles Remastered

Got this yesterday. Highly recommend, even if you're not the biggest Beatles fan (I'm not). Great quality, and their entire catalog. Pretty special time, even if it's not a higher form of encoding, such as a 5.1 mix of some kind.

I haven't even heard them on my home system yet (only at work), and I've been HIGHLY impressed.

PS3 or Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player?

I want to get a blu-ray player but trying to decide between the top 2 players. My kids are young 8 and 10 and we don't allow them to play all those fighting games and they already have a wii system. Is the PS3 a better blu-ray player than the BDP-S350? I like the price on that blu ray also. I know with all gaming systems if you want more controllers that is extra, memory extra, games are very high price too. What do you recommend?

Suggestions on connecting iPhone to a Onkyo receiver?

Who buys SACDs?

Just wondering if anyone on here buys SACDs or any other multi-channel music. If so, where did you get it and which ones would you recommend?

Also, I wonder if SACD is slowly dying? I went into Fry's the other day and found that the SACD section is getting smaller than what I remember it use to be. Having listened to it now, I must say that it is far superior to regular CD. Especially the fact that it is multi-channel as well. I think that it may have come out premature and the hardware was much too expensive. I'm only just starting to delve into it because I have an original 60GB PS3. I read on a website that not all PS3 support SACDs so that is a bummer, otherwise it might have driven a higher adoption rate. I really do not see any other formats, besides possibly DTS Master Audio or TrueHD disks being sold to replace SACDs. But even still, I think SACD's sound is superior (though I don't know the specs of DTS MA or TrueHD to compare with SACD's 2 million/sec sample rate). Anyways, it would be interesting to find out who else listens to this stuff after purchasing their Aperion speakers.

Hopefully some of you can offer some insight. After being burned from the demise of HD-DVD (XBOX 360 add-on), I'm finally in the market for a Blu-Ray player. I've narrowed down my choices to the 2 mentioned in the subject line, but still have reservations. I'm kind of interested in an audio format that's better than cd, and the Oppo plays SACD's, while the Samsung does not. Should I take the plunge into SACD territory? Should I just get the Samsung and clear some room for a record player & some LP's? [Please visit the site to access the poll]

Well, I recently ordered a 4T Grand SD.... and now I'm crazy excited. I'm upgrading from a $70 2.1 speaker system thats hook up to my TVs headphone port. In fact, I've never even heard a nice surround sound system, other than at the theater, so I'm psyched! I also purchased a Pioneer VSX-1018-AH-K Reciever, which is sitting here waiting with me... Apple & Record Companies FINALLY get it!!

So I know that Apple and some record companies changed their policy on DRM a few weeks back, but for Apple to finally release music in 256 - 320 Kbps sample rate is just plain smart. I've purchased a few songs in the past and just got burned when my Windows machine died and I had to re-install the OS and found that I had lost all of the songs that I had purchased. On top of this, these songs were only recorded in crappy 128Kbps sample rate. I vowed to never buy songs again. Well, FINALLY Apple and some record companies have finally "GOT IT". I have to admit that I rarely buy songs and the reason were the things I mentioned, but with the removal of DRM AND the higher quality sample rate has convinced me to start purchasing music. I figured that if you're going to spend money on music, it better damn well be the best quality possible. When you buy a CD in the store, you don't get crappy sounding songs. So why should you when you buy it in a digital format? Also, if you're going to play some good music, why play it on some crummy computer speakers when you can play it on some nice Aperion speakers? Am I right?

So what do you guys think? Has this changed your thinking about purchasing online music?

Monthly Library Trip

Well, for the last couple months the wife, kids and I have been doing the monthly library trip. The kids head downstairs to the kids section, the wife goes to wherever she goes and I head over to the music section. I usually grab about 10CD's for my enjoyment. It's amazing how much good music can be had at the library

My first audition of my Aperion system was to fire up the "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe" DVD. This is one of the many incarnations of Yes. I was absolutely floored with Wakeman's solo that I am still healing from the bruises on the bottom of my jaw when it hit the floor. I have also watched some ELP as well, but pristine footage is not so available from what I have seen.

If there are any prog fans out there, what DVDs are you watching?

My living room has a vaulted ceiling, 13 feet tall at the highest point. I'm thinking of putting a pair of 632 LR speakers on a ledge underneath this high point, about 9 feet from the floor, with a sub woofer on the floor. Can you tell me what kind of sound I can expect? Musically speaking, will it fill the room, or will sound be lost with the speakers being so far above ear level?

Aperion vs. Outlaw Audio

I am in the process of building a stereo system and I have hit a roadblock on deciding which subwoofer to purchase. The two that I am looking at are Aperion S8-APR and Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Compact.

On looks alone the Aperion would be the winner. Hands down! But I do not want to go on looks alone. They both are the same price and they both are geared towards those who have limited space.(I will have this system in my dorm.) The Aperion subwoofer has 150watts while the Outlaw Audio has 225watts. I know higher watts do not normally translate into better performance, but this is Outlaw Audio and I trust them.

Any suggestions?

To all the Aperion forum gang: We need your help.

The Aperion Demonstration room is in need of some new demo material- specifically music. CD, SACD, DVD-A, Dolby 5.1 mixes, we'll take 'em all. We love Diana Krall but "Girl in the Other Room" needs to be retired. I think "Money for Nothing" is starting to wear it's welcome a little bit too. (Just a little, though. The section where Sting gets out of tune and laughs is still priceless)

We're just strapped for ideas on new, fresh stuff as well as classic material. We need a diverse selection, so we're asking for your suggestions. Please help us out and tell us what you like to use to show off your gear.

One of my Favorite new movements are Reggae ton I did not know about it until I got a gig as a DJ in a Latin night club and they gave me a few records to play and it was on from there. Next thing I know it was coming up everywhere with Daddy Yankee, NORE, and Ivy Queen.

Daddy Yankee made reggae ton popular, NORE was in hip hop and made the crossover

Witch brought hip hopers like my self into the it. Ivy Queen was featured on a huge amount of records and put out classics like En Mi Imperio, and The Original Rude Girl and now she is coming back with a new record called Sentimiento I play in all the time in umgd and my co workers love it you can see what I am talking about here

To celebrate the newfound ability to post YouTube videos here on the forum, let's all post and discuss our favorite music videos! I'll start with what I believe to be one of the most influential and important videos of all time - A-Ha's "Take On Me." This was one of the first videos that broke out of the 'bunch of guys in a small room with instruments, lights, mirrors, shiny shirts and a fog machine' mold. It was groundbreaking and filled with an amazing mix of live action and animation. Man, I love this thing.
