    Watchmen

    -A simple review....-

Saw this last night. Overall it was a great movie, but not super great. Visually stunning though. *****

So yes it was a bit long (2hrs 40min). I think they tried to cram too much of the graphic novel into a movie, which can get messy for some viewers.  Allot of back story if your not familiar with the watchmen, so it does catch you up. A few slow parts but overall it played out well. Not your typical super hero story and the movie did a good job at it being so raw. This is NOT like watching a Batman/Ironman movie at all. It was rated R as it should have been, although NR might have been better Smile.  I felt 300 was a better adaptation, but then again that's a whole different animal. Can't really compare those two too much. The characters' were done extremely well. I can't stress enough how amazing this movie looked. This will be in the blu-ray collection.  Rorschach owned Big Smile

Get to the movies and watch itYes

Nice, I'll probably slack and see it in a couple of weeks.  I've heard lots of mixed reviews, but the graphic novel really is one of the best comics ever written so I will see it sooner or later.

    Re: Watchmen

Talked to a co-worker that went and saw the 7am showing this morning, and she said that it moved very nicely for a long-ass movie.  Didn't feel as long as it was.  She's not a fan of the GN, but she is a fan of comic book movies in general.

I don't get out to see movies much anymore, so I'm not sure I'll go out of my way to see this, but I'll likely buy it on BD when it hits.

    Re: Watchmen

    Saw it this weekend.

Lots of clumsiness, particularly the laughable scenes between Laurie and Dan, the music was horrible for the most part and fight scenes were unrealistic.

    BUT

The portrayal of Rorschach/Dr. Manhattan/Comedian were good enough to give the gist of the ideas of the graphic novel.

Rorschach in particular was spot on.

I'd say it was a thought provoking movie in spite of its numerous flaws.  Probably more so for folks that haven't read it, since it didn't really add anything to what was in the GN.

I've been really wanting to see this movie, it comes out this month, can't wait to see it.  Heard mixed reviews, some people said it could of been a lot better.  I'm sure I like it, I don't judge movies too much, like all types.

    Re: Watchmen

I saw this when it came out in the theaters and reread the GN going into the movie, and just recently Netflixed the "Tales of The Black Freighter" which was the comic within the comic.  The DVD also included "Under the Hood", which was excerpts of the book that the orginal Nite-Owl wrote after revealing his identity, which also appeared in the GN between chapters.

I think that if you enjoyed the film and have read the GN, the DVD is a must rent since it really is part of the GN as a whole.

As for the movie I enjoyed it.  I thought the choice of music worked, and techinally it was amazing.  Snyder gave a film that was pretty true to the source material, which with comic readers is a big deal.

Have to agree that Malin Ackerman's Laurie was a weak spot, although in the GN you cleary see the awkwardness of Laurie and Dan's realtionship.  But that doesn't excuse some of the delivery of her dialouge.

I think that many people went into this movie expecting alot more action, which is note really what this movie was.  But if it gets people to read the GN, then more power to it.

Well if you can't tell, I recommend it as a rental for those who haven't seen it yet.

    Re: Watchmen

I thought it was too long, I have not read the comic books, so it seemed even longer. I enjoyed the visual effects, I will give it another go in a few weeks, might be better second time around :)

Yes, it is long. No, it won't get any better the second time around. It was a stupid movie the first time you saw it and it can only be worse the second time.

i couldn't disagree more. i actually first saw the movie and then read the comic. i was simply mesmerized by the imagery, story, subtle hidden messages, political references and the overall cinematography. to be honest, i liked snyder's ending a lot more than moore's. a giant exploding squid seemed a bit too unadorned as the grand finale of a sophisticated and greatly metaphorical story.

perception of "length" is very subjective so i wouldn't count that as a negative. to many, the 3 hours weren't long enough as it still missed lots of little intricacies found in the comic book. the ultimate cut, that just came out a few weeks ago, does the movie and the story better justice. it is 3.5 hours long, but just as the return of the king extended edition, it's worth every minute.

For those of us not interested in the comic, it was/is excruciating.   I would imagine it's the same for someone not interested in the LotR books.  A 3.5 hour movie is too long for a story you're not really interested in.

    Re: Watchmen

I have to agree with PJ.  3 1/2 hrs is way too long regardless of the storyline.  I begged for this movie to end.  Now Wolverine, that's was pretty damn cool.

ahh, that's where we would disagree again. i guess it's all about what one sees and expects in a movie and what "cool" means to you. while wolverine is an OK action flick (not the best, not the worst) it has no depth to it. it was predictable, cheesy and took advantage of every single action cliche out there.

watchmen is a love or hate kind of movie, it's quite apparent from this thread alone. i happened to get it and love it in its entirety but can see how one can get weary of it after a couple of hours.

Agreed!  My expectations were certainly lower for Wolverine.  I consider a good rent something I can watch in one night though Smile
