Wow that thing looks sweet!  I probably would have gotten it over the 8D had it been available.  Come to think of it I still have a few days left on my 30 day trial...

You would want a sub with less power?

I wouldn't. I regret getting the 8D as it is now that I've moved into a bigger space. Don't get me wrong I love it and it is super impressive. But should have went 12 right of the bat, for future proofing.

    Re: New Sub??

The 8D is amazing but is definitely overkill for the space I have now, I bet the 8A could be worth the savings.

But most likely I keep the 8D, just was briefly entertaining the option.

    Re: New Sub??

    Ha, busted!

Yeah the "official" launch of the 8a will be tomorrow when we issue a press release.  We figured we throw it up on the site since they are here and I thought one of you guys would notice, good work Jason!

We thought in these tough times a low cost alternative to the 8D would be appealing for folks that may not be able to drop $499 on a sub.  But of course the 8D is a whole lot more sub with dual drivers, more powerful class D amp, DSP and remote control so personally if you have the means for an 8D I still think that's the way to go.

Hmmm, two different product lines.  Some of us suggested that when the Bravus subs were released, the customer's always right Stick out tongue

Oops. Didn't mean to spoil the surprise. I wonder if I get anything for breaking the news. . .

I was amazed to see a new sub but I'm not sure it would help me much since firing downward onto my downstairs neighbor will probably be louder for them then the 8D. I can't believe it's the same weight as the 8D and looks like it's a bit larger. I couldn't find a picture of the back of the unit by the way. Maybe it'll be up tomorrow. Also any reason that the inboxes don't tell you when you get PM's? I checked mine today and found I had a few old messages I never knew about.

Looks good, is there any benefit to the 8d being sealed vs the 8a being ported?

Good catch, I put a request in to get a picture of the back of the sub added so hopefully we can get that up soon.  Yes it is larger than the 8D but the smaller amp and single driver make it the same weight.

As for PMs, the email notification wasn't working before but I believe we fixed it last week so if you select the send email "when new topics are posted in this forum" you should get an email when you receive a new PM.

Yes the 8D does have a tighter sound in comparison with the 8A due to it being a sealed cabinet.  You can also get the 8A to chuff from the port if you push it hard enough, but it can play quite loud before this is an issue.

    Re: New Sub??

We have a 1,200 sq ft, 3-story townhome with neighbors on the west and south sides. My home theater faces the northeast corner. The garage is below my home theater and a bedroom (office) is above.

As it relates to the adjoining neighbors, will a downfiring sub provide less boom-boom? It seems like it would, but then I can imagine that a sub firing against a wood floor might be more thunderous than ports facing an external wall on one side and an open floorplan on the other.

Did I just confuse myself? Probably.

Incidentally, I'm working toward a 4T Hybrid system. I sit 9' from a plasma and the towers would be just shy of 5' apart.

    Re: New Sub??

While I'm no expert on this, but from what I have read, a downfiring sub maybe even worse for transferring sound/bass to your neighbors.  The reason for this is because the sub will cause the floor, then the walls, to vibrate and the vibrations transfer to your neighbors.  Believe it or not, the walls/floor will act as a speaker and your neighbors will hear that sound.  I have a downfiring sub now and have tried to buy things to reduce that transfer of sound to my neighbor who has complained once about it.  I bought foam that I stuck to the wall that I share with the neighbor and also bought a sub platform called a Subdude.  While looking back at it, the foam may have helped, but I can't really confirm it or not since I haven't been over at my neighbors to listen before and after.  However, from my experience and what I have read in other testimonials, the Subdude does an excellent job of reducing vibrations going into the floor.  Additionally, the Subdude also makes the bass tighter which in turn sounds better.  And the best part, it was only $50.  The foam on the other hand was much more expensive at around $250 to cover a wall that was 7.5' by 4' in size.  Search on Amazon for Subdude and you should be able to find it.

Yes you will definitely get more output out of the 8D because of the extra driver and the more powerful amp.

As for the neighbor issue, I would imagine that neighbors to the side wouldn't hear the 8A as well, but if you have neighbors below you they might hear the 8A more so than the 8D.  Of course placement will come in to play too though as far as transmission of the sound to any side walls.
