Blu-ray (and DVD) movies or music to compare 8D, 12D

    Hello all,

I just put in an order for a 12D to compare to the 8D that I already have (in my trial period). Would someone please recommend movies (Blu-ray preferably, DVD fine too though I don't usually actually watch those anymore) that might make the differences clear?

Jason Hicks suggested Iron Man and Transformers. I did see the thread on the latter movie, and I don't mind annoying the neighbors to do the comparison, because maybe I won't always have neighbors. (Or maybe I will become a curmudgeon who doesn't care about being a good one, though I doubt it as I'm too much of a live-and-let-live libertarian.)

I would also welcome DVD Audio or CD recommendations. My typical listening includes classical, 70-80s progressive and "classic" rock, and new age.

    Cheers,

    Doug

    re:

The Iron Man and Transformers suggestions are good ones.  Honestly, you can probably go with anything from the AVSForums Tier 0 section in the SQ thread.

Things that I've found that also give a good kick in the seat are:

-Hulk (The Ed Norton one) - REALLY recommend this one...lots of consistent low end

    - Kung-Fu Panda

    - Bolt (the beginning in particular)

    - I, Robot

    - Serenity (particularly the entering-atmosphere part of the title sequence)

    Hope that helps.  Have fun.

    Recommended movies, etc.

Thanks PJ, I will look there. I also have Kung-Fu panda in Blu-Ray (for my son) and I think I may have Serenity on DVD too.

Also, I just received Blue Man Group's "Audio" in DVD-Audio. This seems to have a lot of bass, although I'm only part-way through my first listening. Now that I have the nice sound system, I will likely be upgrading many of favorite CDs to DVD-Audio or SACD (once I get an SACD player). Too bad I can't rip these and play them through the "Media Server" on the receiver. I downloaded a 96/24 FLAC and it refused to play it.

    Cheers!

    Re: re:

How about some electronic music to really give that thing a work out?

Never heard of the Tier system, so figure others will like finding out about it.

I don't have a Blu-Ray player quite yet. Holding out for the one Oppo is coming out with. However, for bass in movies my favorite is Master and Commander. When the cannons go off in the opening scenes it is very intense. Also U-571 is another great one when the charges go off. Just some suggestions........

    +1

I use the Master and Commander cannon scene on nearly a daily basis for demos.  I'm sure everyone else in our office isn't the slightest bit sick of it!  Geeked

I will probably get the Oppo when it comes out (unless the price is crazy high), but that is because between my PS3 and my Denon DVD player, neither does SACD over HDMI, which is disappointing. I wouldn't even mind if the Denon converted DSD to PCM and then put that out, but it only outputs over analog. And my PS3 is not one of the old ones with SACD. As far as I'm concerned the only analog signal I want is the one from the amp to the speakers. (OK all you with phonograph tables can stop laughing at me now thank you very much.)

The whole digital subwoofer thing is humorous. A->D->A->D->A->Brain. Good thing it's easy to oversample a 120 Hz signal.

    For testing subs, I use:

Pan's Labyrinth (I almost launched a cone from a sub with that movie.)

    The Dark Knight

     (in that order)

I can't find the url now but a did surf to a site that had film data listed with time codes and freq. in Hz.  I know Pan's Labyrinth was listed.

    Oh, here it 'tis :

    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=755493

    Pan's Labyrinth   5 Hz @ 07:53

I noticed that "Bee Movie" listed 0 Hz.  I wonder how that works, I guess the cone just shoots forward (or back) and stays there.  (There was a "-1 Hz" once but I wasn't in the forest to hear it.) Indifferent

    Here's a good'n:
