    Textile Tweeters

    Hello,

I have a concern about the longevity of Textile Tweeters.  "Google" has failed me in finding a comparison for durability between silk vs. metal (although plenty out there for sound comparisons).  A 10 year warranty obviously shows confidence.  Still, if spending thousands on a system, one hopes that it can be counted on for many years to come.  As a guess, it would seem that a metal tweeter would last longer.  At least a bug can't have it for lunch (my attempt at humor).  Any information on the durability of a silk tweeter's lifespan would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

    Found this quote on Ask.com-

("In fact, in the late nineties, I used a much-modified version of this same Japanese silk-dome driver in designing the M1 Active speaker for Alesis Studio Electronics. Staying at roughly $4 over its 25 year life span that particular tweeter is what has made me a die-hard soft-dome devotee").  Of course I just put a couple of spiders next to my silk dome tweeters hoping they will make the necessary repairs.:)

    24 hours in a day ... 24 beers in a case ... coincidence?

From personal experience silk dome tweets are extreamly durable.  Before I got my Aperions my speakers with silk domes ran reliably for 16 years.  I don't us them anymore because one of the 6.5 in woofers broke.  The tweeters were still going strong.  From a materials point of view a fabric tweeter is a excellent choice.  Metals can fatigue and actually be to rigid.  From an audio stand point, which is alyways subjective, I find silk dome tweeters to have the best sound of any material and configuration.  I presume that other fabrics might work as well but silk does have special qualities.

    Cheers
